The news around omicron is looking pretty bleak at this moment in time. I’m feeling less optimistic that we’re not heading towards tougher restrictions/lockdown.

Suzi888 · 13/12/2021 21:08

I very much doubt it. They just want people to get the booster, so need a bit of doom to give people the push.

Bebedoogoogle · 13/12/2021 21:10

Lockdown inevitable
Government don’t have a choice if predictions come to fruition

Gingernaut · 13/12/2021 21:11

Yeah, because the first people hospitalised and dying of Omicron is just 'scaremongering'. FGS

JanglyBeads · 13/12/2021 21:11

Er and why are they so keen for people to get the booster quickly …..

Yes OP it’s bit looking good.

Malteser71 · 13/12/2021 21:11

What Suzi said.

Though depends who you want to believe. Plenty of people happy to whip up anxiety/hysteria. Especially on anonymous forums

whatagloriousthingtobe · 13/12/2021 21:14

This is the thing, is it just to get people to have the booster ? I'm sorry but with this government you just never know ! Of course reports are looking bad. And obviously it's an awful shame a death has been reported.

It is though. Why do we need to hear about that in real time?

The media should need to have some kind of accountability. It's been absolutely shameful these past couple of weeks...how is anyone in this country meant to be mentally well with this shit going on?

I guess "stay calm, be sensible and get your boosters" doesn't sell papers.

whatagloriousthingtobe · 13/12/2021 21:15

The last week or so the media has really ramped up the fear

OP posts:
NutCheeseBag · 13/12/2021 21:19

Dying with omicron, not necessarily of omicron

WoodenReindeer · 13/12/2021 21:19

My anxiety is coming back again 😔. I hate the uncertaintly. Remember schools wemt back for 1 day last january...

bingandsula · 13/12/2021 21:19

Carefully timed for when most people are due their boosters isn't an accident. One theory is it's to get people to have their boosters. Although if the first two jabs don't work against the bloody thing why on earth would a third jab of the same thing work for goodness sake!

Personally I think it may be that we're back to square one and they don't want to admit it. Jabs don't work at all against the new variant and so they're distracting us until they can find a jab that does.

We'll have restrictions in January. They can't afford politically 'to cancel Christmas' after their antics last year have come to light.

The government only act when they're forced to, so we know it's bad.
TheWayTheLightFalls · 13/12/2021 21:25

My kid’s nursery has just shut on no notice, shortages of staff elsewhere in school. Really feels like it has come out of nowhere and that we’re back to January 2021.

Bebedoogoogle · 13/12/2021 21:30

Anyone who thinks the Tories are doing this for political gain needs their head read!

It’s really serious. I think more than any other wave. Hence the rush for the boosters. It’s a Herculean task and last ditch, desperate attempt.

Read the room people!

JanglyBeads · 13/12/2021 21:35

I’ll ask again, why do you think the government is desperate for people to get their boosters??

Omicron is very very serious. Listen to the scientists.

Thewiseoneincognito · 13/12/2021 21:38

My opinion is Lockdown is coming -but it will come too late and we’ll likely be under restrictions until late spring.

ZippyZap · 13/12/2021 21:39

It could go the other way... Lots of people get the booster... We keep going as we are and they look at the data for deaths and hospitalisation compared to other variants... And perhaps it won't be as bad as the media is making out. Yes it might be more transmissible again, but the boosters might hold up and there won't be the need for a full lock down. If they took a risk and let people's vaccine antibodys drop just as this new variant came along, then we could be in lockdown again, so I guess the sensible thing to do was to get everyone panicking to get the booster just before the antibody levels drop... Which seems to have worked looking at the booking and people waiting hours for the vaccine!

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 13/12/2021 21:43

What do you think the reason is that they want people to get the booster?
Blubells · 13/12/2021 21:43

Yeah, because the first people hospitalised and dying of Omicron is just 'scaremongering'. FGS

The person died WITH Omicron, not OF as you imply!

NightOwlWoes · 13/12/2021 21:43

I would imagine lockdown is on the horizon. It sucks but if it has to be done then it has to be done.

Blubells · 13/12/2021 21:45

Omicron is very very serious. Listen to the scientists.

Could you please provide some links to those scientists?

Everything I've read is that Omicron causes only mild symptoms.

GivingUpOnSleep · 13/12/2021 21:46

@Blubells

Oh FFS, all this bollocks of people protesting it's dying WITH not OF Covid (whatever variant). What are the real chances they actually died of something else within that time frame? Of course it's possible, but less likely.

People ARE dying OF Covid. Whatever those of you who like to seem cool and call other people sheep would like to believe

tumpletops · 13/12/2021 21:47

As far as I'm aware, the scientific evidence suggests that double vax plus booster gives good protection against this variant (76% I think?). The data also seems to show its more transmissible but causes less serious illness. Now of course if lots of people get it a percentage of them will end up in hospital, and those numbers could be really high. So, we have to have a massive push for people to have their boosters. The message from the government needs to be firm, this is something to worry about so we need to alter our behaviour accordingly. Then as time goes on they can monitor admission rates and decide if stricter measures are needed. The government needs to follow the science.
