Kudos to the Austrians

In Vienna yesterday, a massive peaceful demonstration on an unimaginable scale took place to protest against mandatory vaccinations. People of all ages took to the streets. Mainstream British media, as usual, are misreporting their numbers at 44,000 - there were at least 6-7 times over that many people, if not more. Austrians are primarily peaceful law-abiding citizens, so hopefully it'll send a strong message to the world when they take to the streets like this.

Reuters, Al-Jazeera and every other MSM outlet also confirms approximately 44,000.
I see the speaker was the leader of the alt-right.
That's what should be worrying people about Austria right now, not the fact that they're successfully getting a grip on the latest Covid wave.

Postdatedpandemic · 12/12/2021 13:50

300,000 at a far right rally in Austria!
I find that somewhat concerning.

Austria has a much smaller population than most countries, and outside of the cities, small towns/populated areas and proportionally quite a lot of non-urban space and few international hubs. My info is out of date here, but its health system was, and likely still is, supported by decent funding, sophisticated, developed, and pretty amazing. I would be willing to bet that the country's measures to prevent overwhelm of the system have been very effective so far, a situation that has given them something nearer a relative best-case scenario now in 2021 and confidence in healthcare being equal to the next year or 2 even if things worsen. I can't say the same for the UK.

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 12/12/2021 13:55

I agree with you. It’s important that governments realise that a sizeable and demographic do not in any way support totalitarian laws.

I don’t need to agree with the politics of the speaker to understand and agree with the principles behind this peaceful protest.

I do not want to be ordered to do anything to my body that I do not agree with. If that were imposed upon me I absolutely would resist.

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 12/12/2021 13:56

And just to be clear, I’m not an ‘anti-vaxxer’ nor am I in any way ‘far right’/‘alt right’ or any other such right.

frazzledali · 12/12/2021 13:58

What a load of tosh. What do you think you sound like, blabbing on about apartheid? What an embarrassment you are.

Also - 'unimaginable scale'? Just goes to show the limits of your imaginations.

Away back to your far-right bubbles.

Good job it's not true!
Postdatedpandemic · 12/12/2021 14:00

@TheNoonBell far right and racist.
Stop minimising other people's previous suffering. The unvaccinated are not a race. What an offensive comparison to make.

MrsColon · 12/12/2021 14:02

Cases of COVID have increased since the lockdown of the unvaccinated.

Hmm have you never heard of incubation period? Confused

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 12/12/2021 14:03

Oh hmm I missed the ‘6 or 7 times that’ - I really wouldn’t know so I can’t agree with that. But mandatory vaccination should not happen, that much I do agree with.

Do you have a link to anything saying there were more people? And yesterday. Not the 3/12 which is when 44,000 people protested?

So were you present and counting everyone? Are all the news outlets wrong then? Austria has a good health system and I suspect the majority want to keep it that way.
PAFMO · 12/12/2021 14:15

@TreborBore

Well, she's wrong about the date of the protest to start with, so I don't think we should be too surprised she's wrong about the numbers as well. But let's wait for a link showing the "ten times as many" protestors yesterday, the 11th of December before passing judgement.

(OP- there were 150 protesting in Linz last Saturday- you can bulk up your numbers with those a bit. I see numbers aren't really your thing tbf, that is you on the % of vaccinated in hospital thread, isn't it?

Precisely.

Well yes. Given how infectious Omicron is it would have been a miracle if they haven't.

The key question is are they spreading faster or slower than they would have without that lockdown? And, more particularly, what is the impact on spread amongst the unvaccinated, who are most likely - even with Omicron - to get seriously ill and impact on health services.

Libertybauble · 12/12/2021 14:30

Good for them - ordinary people standing up to the appalling authoritarianism being inflicted on them. I don’t think that being opposed to mandatory medical procedures or segregation of a group in society is a terribly far right position. Sounds like some of you would be very much at home in the far right, though you probably consider yourselves to be liberals.

Glad to see this and I will be marching myself if they try this in the UK. And I have had three vaccinations.

@frazzledali - do you know me?! No, I didn't think so.... so enough of your bullying attitude!! You bully me, when I bully you, not a second sooner! Shameful person!!

A generic question to all on here, why do MNetters feel the right and need to respond to anything nowadays with a highly aggressive attitude?! It feels like MN turned into a massive playground for bullies.... especially on the covid platform.

Also, what's with the mindless questions of ....
were you there and counted every person?

You have heard of social media and live footages shared? I sooner believe what is being shown and shared by my own relatives/friends on social media than what is being reported by MSM.

Agreed. Opposing compulsory vaccination and the creation of a two-tier society does not make you far-right!
TheNoonBell · 12/12/2021 14:43

It appears it does now TooMany. The far right will soon be the 95% of society that aren't far left.

You actually know so little about the situation in Austria you posted something claiming it was a) yesterday b) ten times the number.

As for accusing pp of bullying, you're the one "shouting" when people have pointed out your story is a lie.

Are you genuinely saying you genuinely believe there was a 300,000 person rally in Vienna yesterday? Really?

And this is everything that is wrong with the far right. You would rather believe social media and things being shared by your far right bubble than you would actual reporting. It's an echo chamber of madness.

scottishtablet23 · 12/12/2021 15:09

@PAFMO - duly noted and I shall pass your message on to my brother and his wife + her family that they had just imagined being there at the demonstration in Vienna yesterday, on Saturday 11th of December 2021, because Ms PAFMO here on British Mumsnet knows better and it hadn't really actually happened Shock Hmm.

Awww, you've got to love people making complete fool of themselves on public platforms.
