To wonder what's the logic behind wearing a mask under your chin?

Now that more people are wearing masks again, there's a rise in the number of people in venues like shops and public transport wearing their masks under their chin. If anyone round here does it, or knows people who do, can you explain the thinking behind it? If you do it because you don't approve of having to wear one, wouldn't it be easier just to leave it off? I struggle to understand the point of taking the trouble to put one on only to put it under your chin, or under your nose.

Hides my double chin quite nicely!!

But I wear it correctly in shops and other indoor places but will pull it down under my chin when out in fresh air

RampantIvy · 12/12/2021 10:25

Or wearing them under their noses.

I find mask wearing makes me need to blow my nose more frequently, so I pop my mask under my chin to do this because my mask hooks itself behind my glasses. I always pull my mask back up to cover my mouth and my nose afterwards.

HumunaHey · 12/12/2021 10:28

I assume it's initially worn properly to get into the venue/shop, thrn dripped down to the chin after. Or maybe some peoplput it on with good intention but pull it down for a bit of a breather.

Tumbleweed101 · 12/12/2021 10:29

If the person doing it is wearing glasses it's probably because they are trying to see! I'm massively struggling with mine misting up. Just remembered why I couldn't do anything for months when they were mandatory before.

I don't wear mine under my chin but do occasionally pull it down to clear glasses.

OnlyonemoresleeptilChristmas · 12/12/2021 10:29

Or taking them down to blow your nose or cough Angry
keep your snot and spray in your mask!

TwoMuchTwoYoung · 12/12/2021 10:29

I always thought it was people wearing them in between shops etc.
It irrationally annoys me though, just take the bloody thing off.

RampantIvy · 12/12/2021 10:30

I can't not blow my nose @OnlyonemoresleeptilChristmas. Don't be ridiculous.

5128gap · 12/12/2021 10:30

I imagine its people who feel uncomfortable, either taking a break from it, or having it in readiness should an authority figure show up. They are taking the trouble to wear it because its mandatory and its quicker to pull it up than get it out of your bag or pocket when its enforced. They aren't making a statement of disapproval and don't want to get into trouble, but don't like wearing it.

2pinkginsplease · 12/12/2021 10:30

I do it on occasions if I’m at the shops and going from shop to shop. I take it down under my chin between shops. I don’t feel I breathe properly with it on so gives me a chance to breathe normally.

You just need to make sure you get a good deal with the nose wire. I wear glasses and am blind without them. I very rarely get steamed up glasses and when I do, just adjusting the wire fixes the problem.

I fucking hate wearing one (don't really see the point as I along with most of the population don't change it everytime I touch it.

I push mine down over my chin in work when I am in a room on my own so that I can easily pull it up when someone enters.

I also put it on when I leave car and will pull it down until I enter the shop. It's easier to pull it up than put it on when holding bags etc.

Sometimes I pull it down because it's causing my anxiety to rise and I don't want a panic attack.

TroysMammy · 12/12/2021 10:34

Mine hangs from a face mask holder which is around my neck when I don't need to wear one. It's always there when I do. I can't believe after all this time people haven't got to grips on how to wear one correctly.

This sums it up^

For me my glasses start steaming up so I pull it under my chin to ‘demist’ occasionally

SallyOMalley · 12/12/2021 10:34

A combination of steamed-up glasses (even with a nose twig), too many earrings and often a woolly hat. I get all tangled up.

I bought some anti fog wipes for my glasses, as I can't see a thing when they're misted up. They're not perfect but they help a lot

Washing hands first?

But you aren't wearing it properly either if it's hanging there in front of you between wearing..... do you wash and sanitise hands each time? You aren't supposed to fiddle/constantly touch masks

Pointless

How do you do this?
Where I live (Tanzania) I don't wear a mask.
I've (literally) just arrived in the UK. When I have had to wear a mask my glasses get steamed up. Any detailed advise would be great.

Iwasonline · 12/12/2021 10:40

I often lower my mask in shops when I'm with my eldest child. It's helpful for his communication to see my face when I'm talking

Iwasonline · 12/12/2021 10:41

To add, when I'm with only my youngest child I don't lower my mask

HarlanPepper · 12/12/2021 10:42

There's no 'logic' in it! I imagine people slide it down under their chin when they're in a situation where they don't need to wear it it and then forget to put it back up again when they do need to. I don't enjoy the 'chin hammock' look myself but I can see the convenience of it.

InTheMiddle23 · 12/12/2021 10:44

Protect your eyes. Wear goggles.

TheWitchersWife · 12/12/2021 10:48

Going from a cold outside to a warm indoors and the hotness on my face from my breath and my mask makes me cough and sometimes gag.
I can't go into wet rooms or saunas for the same reason, hot air just makes me feeling sick.
So I sometimes have to have a breather if no one is close by. I wouldn't pull it down if someone was right next to me, but taking if off my nose/mouth for 10 seconds or so is the only thing stopping me cough or throw up.
