To wonder what's the logic behind wearing a mask under your chin?

Now that more people are wearing masks again, there's a rise in the number of people in venues like shops and public transport wearing their masks under their chin. If anyone round here does it, or knows people who do, can you explain the thinking behind it? If you do it because you don't approve of having to wear one, wouldn't it be easier just to leave it off? I struggle to understand the point of taking the trouble to put one on only to put it under your chin, or under your nose.

Or taking them down to blow your nose or cough Angry keep your snot and spray in your mask!
You actually tried walking around with a face mask full of snot? It's minging!
JovialNickname · 12/12/2021 10:50

I wear it as a chin hammock when I'm in-between shops. If you're on the bus, then popping into a shop 2 mins away, then another one just down the road, it makes sense to pull it under your chin rather than taking the blasted thing off and putting it away every time.

But I agree I don't get it when people do this, or wear it under their nose, on buses either. If you don't want to wear it, don't. What's the point in half wearing it. I always assume these people don't want to wear a mask but are too cowardly to make the stand and take it off. Same with people that don't wear a mask but clutch a bottle of water brandishing it at shoulder height. Yes we know you don't have to wear it you're drinking water. Just wear the bloody thing properly, or not at all.

Re blowing your nose, don't be ridiculous

My heart sank when masks came back in. Not because they're ineffective, or because they're impossible for a glasses-wearer, and because they're an extra expense, but because these threads from the slavering SS volunteers would start up again.

Washing hands first?

Not possible in the middle of Tesco or on public transport, no. Hand gel is a good fun in this case.

Watapalava · 12/12/2021 10:53

I imagine it’s because of why I wear mine in my chin:

I don’t agree with masks and I wear it purely on my chin in case challenged by police so I can whip it up

I never ever cover my face with it

Purely for show

Whammyyammy · 12/12/2021 10:55

Why are some people so obsessed over whether other people are wearing masks or not and how they wear them?

ddl1 · 12/12/2021 10:56

Where is this happening? If people are wearing masks under their chin in shops, buses, indoor venues, and anywhere else where you're supposed to wear a mask, I agree that's totally useless. But if it's outdoors, people might be keeping the mask so that it's handy to put on when they do go inside.

Totally agree. Then it will repeat when the guidance changes to not wearing them again 😒

It's the great excitement and chief interest of their lives.

Fuck knows. I never even notice who's wearing what or how.

Same reason they obsessed about how long people were exercising for in LD, and in the absence of covid, how people bring up the children, dress, decorate their houses. They don't have a lot to do. And the little they do have, they pride themselves on doing better than other people.

@planktonscomputerwife they must have such boring and unfulfilled lives..... very sad really

Not as sad as people who don't give a shit about others.

Complying but rebelling

My mum is elderly. She tries, bless her, but it sometimes slips off her nose and she doesn't notice.

5128gap · 12/12/2021 11:16

I'm not sure that not wanting to catch covid indicates one is an especially caring type, if this manifests as bring unpleasant and critical about other people.

I did this for the first time yesterday because I was in and out of shops and wearing a hat. It was so awkward to hook loops round ears because I then had to fix hair, ears and hat. Eventually removed hat and that made it easier to put on mask.

Mydogdoesntlisten · 12/12/2021 11:23

Maybe they're thinking wearing masks didn't seem to reduce transmission and numbers of COVID cases in Scotland and Wales as compared to England over the summer and autumn, so they're paying lip service to the new mask mandate?

AliveAndSleeping · 12/12/2021 11:24

I guess some people move it down when they are outside and then forget to push it back up again. Others might have ill fitting masks that keep sliding down (this is for the mouth but not nose wearers). Others don't want to get into trouble legally but just don't want to wear a mask.

I did find it funny though when the consultant in the hospital did that during my appointment when I was pregnant. I didn't say anything and just hoped he was vaccinated (I wasn't eligible for a vaccine at that point). Not very confidence inspiring.

liveforsummer · 12/12/2021 11:25

They've pulled it down for some air then forgotten to pull it back up again
