To wonder what's the logic behind wearing a mask under your chin?

Now that more people are wearing masks again, there's a rise in the number of people in venues like shops and public transport wearing their masks under their chin. If anyone round here does it, or knows people who do, can you explain the thinking behind it? If you do it because you don't approve of having to wear one, wouldn't it be easier just to leave it off? I struggle to understand the point of taking the trouble to put one on only to put it under your chin, or under your nose.

Are you the mask police OP. If you are, maybe they are doing to annoy people like you. But it’s probably a substitute for taking it off completely. Easier it put on this way.

50ShadesOfCatholic · 12/12/2021 11:29

It's a thing for teenagers, a look.

Exhausteddog · 12/12/2021 11:34

Or taking them down to blow your nose or cough
keep your snot and spray in your mask

I cough or sneeze with mask on but I can't blow my nose with it on.
I always seem to need to blow my nose as soon as I get on the train. I take my mask down, blow nose, hand sanitise and then put mask back on (over nose and mouth) I don't know how else I'm meant to do that?

Exhausteddog · 12/12/2021 11:35

...but agree i can't see the point of the under chin wearing as a general thing.

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 12/12/2021 11:35

Where I work some customers take it down to speak to us

We back off and then they are all offended ' oh I haven't got it'

traka · 12/12/2021 11:37

Not as bad as the people that come in to the office wearing a mask then come over to talk and remove it then put it back on to leave

I came to the conclusion a very long time ago that most things covid related don't make sense

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 12/12/2021 11:39

I saw my Dad do this the other day. We teased him about it looking daft. He was doing it to keep it easily to hand when needed but out of the way while eating and drinking.

So we arrived at the venue and he wore his mask properly, once seated with a drink it was under his chin, then back up to pop to the buffet and down when seated, up again to nip to the loo. He was being really diligent about wearing it as it was a large gathering, he's elderly and Mum is elderly and CEV. After some gentle teasing he took it off then had spend time checking every pocket before he could get up to go to the bar 🤣

Definitely not an antimasker or Covid denier.

This is a ridiculous comment
Newrumpus · 12/12/2021 11:40

I imagine rather then logic it is convenience. What are your thoughts on it OP?

FreeBritnee · 12/12/2021 11:40

I think it’s a finger up to compliance.

yaldyy · 12/12/2021 11:41

I go through phases of trying to do my best to wear one but often get overwhelmed / panicky / feel like I can't breathe. Wether that's the adhd and some weird over-stimulation type thing, or some underlying ptsd from a sexual assault years ago I have no idea.

But basically I do my best to wear a mask and when I feel it "coming on" I usually pull the mask under my chin and focus on breathing for a while.

Sometimes I just don't bother because an exemption is probably covered by either of those two things above 🤷🏻‍♀️

Alwayswonderedwhy · 12/12/2021 11:43

Well my glasses steam up so I'm regularly seen with my mask hanging from one ear which I suppose is the same thing. I tend to do that rather than completely take it off in anticipation of someone judging me for not wearing one.

megustalacerveza · 12/12/2021 11:52

So that they can pull it up quickly if it looks like there will be a spot check so they don't get fined.

People are so incredibly selfish.

TempsPerdu · 12/12/2021 11:53

I imagine its people who feel uncomfortable, either taking a break from it, or having it in readiness should an authority figure show up. They are taking the trouble to wear it because its mandatory and its quicker to pull it up than get it out of your bag or pocket when its enforced. They aren't making a statement of disapproval and don't want to get into trouble, but don't like wearing it

Yes, this is me. I hate mask wearing and find it very uncomfortable and restrictive - sinus issues/perennial rhinitis makes it hard to breathe properly and leaves me with a sore throat and a headache. But I don’t want any confrontation from mask zealots so I wear one into the shop etc, remove it the moment I set foot out outside and occasionally pull it down under my chin for a breather if I get too faint or headachy.

dropitlikeitsloth · 12/12/2021 12:03

If I’m out shopping I’ll wear a mask under my chin to stop me getting it in and out of my bag constantly. I just pull it up before entering a shop.

inmyslippers · 12/12/2021 12:40

^^ what spot checks are these? 🤣

Oh they are, are they? To be honest, they just do it to annoy people like you.
ThievesTemple · 12/12/2021 13:20

The only reason masks may not work is because people are wearing thin bits of fabric, the reason they didn’t work in Wales and Scotland when people use this as an excuse.
If you follow the science and wear the correct type of mask then they would be much more effective.
This country makes such a fuss about masks, I can only imagine the uproar if they stipulated the correct type to be worn.

I find it funny when I see those with them on their chin, not quite brave enough to go without or don’t want to be thought of as having a medical exemption.

isittheholidaysyet · 12/12/2021 13:25

My DM regularly wears hers as a chin hammock. She will have in on her nose and mouth in the shops, venues etc.
But outside in between shops, or sitting down for a drink in a cafe it will go on her chin.
She says it's because with glasses, hearing aids and mask strings all behind her ears she gets totally tangled, and can't be doing with removing glasses and hearing aids every time she wants to remove a mask.

megustalacerveza · 12/12/2021 13:27

@sst1234 yes, they are. If you can't be arsed to wear a mask in the middle of a pandemic, you're selfish. And anyone who would put people at risk to annoy someone is a childish bellend.

We live in a country full of belligerent overgrown toddlers. I don't love everything about Spain but by God are people behaving much better over there. Like actual adults.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 12/12/2021 13:40

I’ll put it down in when outdoors i between shops, I wouldn’t typically wear it under my chin inside a shop but I suppose it’s possible I could forget to pull it up.

I do sometimes pull my nose out of it for short periods when in shops. I struggle with anxiety and feeling like I’m short of breath or can’t breathe easily triggers panic attacks (when I was raped a pillow was held over my face and I think it’s linked to that) and sometimes I find if a shop is very warm or if I’ve had to go up stairs it can make me feel short of breath and I need to pull the mask away for a bit of time until the panicky feeling subsided. Occasionally I have had to remove it from my mouth as just uncovering my nose hasn’t been enough, can’t remember if I pulled it under my chin or just took it off entirely but potentially I could be someone who could be seen to be wearing it incorrectly, it’s usually only for a few minutes but anybody just walking past me wouldn’t know that.

RoRoYoYo · 12/12/2021 13:44

So many excuses. Other countries manage mask wearing much better than we do.

I wear glasses and have to wear a mask all day at work. I have never worn my mask around my chin. Just make sure you pinch the nose wire tight and wear your glasses over the top of the mask.

dropitlikeitsloth · 12/12/2021 14:02

Judging by these comments here, I feel like I’m going to just put my mask away in my pocket and get it out again before I go in every shop as obviously me wearing it outside under my chin makes me a rule dodger, selfish and a ‘chin hammock’ wearer.

🙄

yaldyy · 12/12/2021 14:15

So many excuses. Other countries manage mask wearing much better than we do.

Where though? In the US it's largely a political statement and depends on the state. Europe? Is this anecdotal or actual evidence? And if either, how do you know the people who get anxious/ headachey/ faint/ breathless are masking up and dealing with it as opposed to just not going into shops?

If tomorrow there was a blanket NO EXEMPTIONS then I just wouldn't go into shops. But that's not the case here. So I'll personally still go shopping and I'll still try to wear one but if I need an exemption then I'll take it.

It gives me almost exactly the same feeling as trying to walk on holiday in bright sunlight does, or having to stand on a bus when pregnant does. Breathing in warm air, feeling like you're not getting a full breath, your head starts getting sore and you start to feel lightheaded and faint. On holiday I sit down in the shade. When pregnant I get off the bus. In a shop I put my mask under my chin and concentrate on breathing fully. If that turned into an arrestable offence or a £10k fine I just wouldn't go into shops.

I have a few mask-zealot friends who just cannot comprehend that some people struggle, and when I've asked them "do you get a weird breathless / headachey / fainty feeling in bright sunlight or when you get out the bath etc" they all say no. So clearly people are different.

Shocking, I know.

GoodPrincessWenceslas · 12/12/2021 14:19

@RampantIvy

Or wearing them under their noses.

I find mask wearing makes me need to blow my nose more frequently, so I pop my mask under my chin to do this because my mask hooks itself behind my glasses. I always pull my mask back up to cover my mouth and my nose afterwards.

I don't mean that sort of issue, given that you pull the mask back. It's people who go around the whole shop (or sit for the entire train journey) with their mask under their nose or their chin.
