Poor Allegra. You'd have to be cold hearted to not feel sorry for her watching that.

I don’t feel sorry for her. She didn’t have to do that, resigning and leaving it to Downing Street to announce, or tweeting a resignation letter would have sufficed. She’s not an MP, no one would have been surprised by no live resignation speech to cameras. So she chose to do it, and I imagine sympathy is what she was after.

SmellyOldOwls · 08/12/2021 19:12

' I think the guest list will have some every bigger names than Allegra. If they are senior journalists (like Cummings says) then will they admit it or will they conspire to keep each other's secret?'

There's definitely some weirdness happening between the journalists and the government at the moment. ITV have been uncharacteristically savage on this story.

Laura Kuenssberg is very quiet

Wonder if she was at the party?

She got stuck into BJ during the press conference

She'll get allegra's job

Skysblue · 08/12/2021 19:35

It’s upsetting watching someone being made a scapegoat, particularly as the people who were at the party, thenperson whose house it was held in, and the person who first mentioned it on film all seem to have kept their jobs. I guess Allegra wasn’t in the Old Boys’ Club?

(That said, she didn’t seem qualified to do the job. Someone who’s going to be the most important spokesperson in the country should have been able to handle that question with ease, and definitely without the sniggering and plaintive ‘what’s the answer?’ But I digress.)

Boris is always starting sentences with “I think what the British public really want is…”

Allow me to complete that sentence for you, Boris. We want a different leader. Conservative or Labour, Lib Dem or Green, I don’t even care. Literally anyone else would do a better job than Boris Johnson.

I'm Not sure if we should be reading into the fact that ITV broke the story. I know that Stratton used to work with Peston

@Ohmybod

I don’t feel sorry for her in the slightest! Is she only supposed to respect the public when she’s on camera?? The whole video is representative of a party lacking moral and integrity and she has chosen to be part of that. Others should go too but I don’t feel sorry for her. As she was chuckling her ass off we missed out on a last Xmas with FIL.
Absolutely @Ohmybod

She is sorry now yes (for herself)
What about all the people who missed spending time with relatives last Christmas ? Sometimes even when they were terribly ill?
The damage done to my two Autistic kids who missed so much school (& have been set back months if not years actually)
AND the damage done this Christmas re people not being as cautious as they might as they are furious that those in power have ignored the rules (a la Barnard Castle)
The job losses, the worry, the isolation - people trying to do the 'right thing' whilst those in power partied (of COURSE they partied!) and then laughed about how they'd answer questions about it. Shameful.

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 08/12/2021 20:01

@ssd

She'll get allegra's job
Not after the questions she asked today.
deste · 08/12/2021 20:48

Yes but it wasn't a real press conference was it. I think it was a practice for the real one. Why did she ask, " what is the answer to that, "was there a party". I think they were messing around, someone has filmed it and released it, ether in spite or else they thought it was funny. She has been thrown under the bus but as someone above said " she will get another job within no10.

CovidCorvid · 08/12/2021 21:07

I can’t see Laura Kunesburg would want the job. She’s a fairly serious and well respected journalist…..why would you want to swap that for being a spokesperson?

ssd · 08/12/2021 21:16

Shes a true blue tory too

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 08/12/2021 21:21

Don't feel sorry for her at all , you'd think earning that much money a year that she'd know when to keep her big mouth shut and a smirk off her face. Although she's not the only one who seems incapable of that.

Flapjacker48 · 08/12/2021 21:28

Allegra Stratton is an airhead. She got the job due to being mates with Carrie. Apparently there were far better candidates during the mock press conference that each applicant had to do as part of the interview process. She is such a poor performer that number 10 had to sack off the plans for her do to a daily media briefing to journalists and she was moved to a nothing role as "COP Spokesperson". Put hey, we the taxpayer, funded her 125k a year to piss about, nice work if you can get it.

HariboMaroon · 08/12/2021 21:43

Oh gosh I’ll lose sleep tonight, not.

Silly cow.

doodlejump1980 · 08/12/2021 21:47

She’s only crying cos she got caught. Has she been crying for the last year?? Don’t think so.

luverlybubberly · 08/12/2021 21:57

Laura K was paid £290k by the BBC in 2020. Isn't Allegra's job at £120k a step down?

ssd · 08/12/2021 22:05

Maybe a trumped up version of allegras job then, they can come up with something for one of their own

the80sweregreat · 08/12/2021 22:06

I can't believe that Laura k earns that much money and for what ?
The bbc must be mad ( or maybe I am for actually paying the license fees to fund her wages ;(

Ellen888 · 09/12/2021 19:50

Some people have short memories.

Remember Jo Moore, advisor and press officer to the Labour Party sending her infamous e-mail on the day of 9/11 saying it was "a good day to bury bad news" ? This was at the time that nearly 3,000 people were dying due to fire/explosion/falling masonry.

Tony Blair said that she wasn't going to lose her job over one mistake ( ! )
She subsequently went on TV and gave a dry-eyed sneering apology with as much empathy as a hungry rattlesnake.

I have not one jot of sympathy for Allegra but at least she had the decency to resign.

mrshoho · 09/12/2021 21:03

She's only sorry now because she got exposed. I wouldn't feel sorry for her as she'll have another position lined up. It came across as attention seeking to do that statement. She could have just written a letter and be done with it.

Messing around isn't a good way to practice for the real thing is it.
nonowaynever · 09/12/2021 22:20

@NeverDropYourMooncup

I'm pretty sure she won't be left destitute as a result of this.

I'm sure the Spectator can probably find her a job somewhere.

Actually, that might be the unintended consequence of all this - fucking off the Editor of the Spectator. There must be some serious dirt on the lot of them hidden away somewhere. It'll certainly be interesting to find out if that's the case.

Ooh. Good point. Let's hope so!
Changechangychange · 09/12/2021 23:08

Wonder if PM just wanted rid of her and that's why the video was leaked

Well yep, somebody sat on this video for a year, waiting for the right time to release it. Ditto Matt Hancock’s sex tape.

Not sure if it Boris, because this isn’t doing him any favours either. But definitely somebody in No 10 with an axe to grind against her.

I expect that is what she is really crying about - someone she thought was a colleague has completely fucked her over, and then Boris has allowed her to be hung out to dry. She thought she was on the inside and has just found out she isn’t.
