Hate it
@ancientgran maybe so but the workplace concerned is not a dodgy second-hand car dealership we are talking about. It is literally the government of the country. Who set the laws of the country.
So it's funnier because it is the govt of the country? I don't follow that.

By the way I've never worked in a dodgy second-hand car dealership, one of the people I referred to going to prison was a quite high ranking police officer. No one laughed. It was serious, it was a bad public image, it affected our credibility. Bit like this really.

ancientgran · 08/12/2021 17:48

@HeronLanyon

ancient gran yes my mistake. She does say she’s offered her resignation. I heard that as she’s been forced / told / been required to do so. So now I can’t even hear things said correctly or take anything at face value. Apols you’re totally correct !
I think lots of people have said she was sacked so it gets confusing, no worries.
Akire · 08/12/2021 17:48

I don’t feel sorry for her they all broke the rules by having the party. Presume it wasn’t 10 junior staff members staying behind after work with Spotify and bottle of cider. It was organised event no doubt they throw hell of a party.

I’d have some credit if she said yes I went to the party it was wrong. All she doing is saying I was wrong to joke. We deserve proper answers.

CaptainChannel · 08/12/2021 17:49

I am usually an empathetic person but I don't feel even slightly sorry for her. Classic case of crying because she got caught. She was so smug in that video.

luverlybubberly · 08/12/2021 17:50

In the video she said she didn't go so maybe that's accurate? I understand why she's not going to publicly list others who did attend

She may well start squealing soon!
.. let's see , a woman scorned and all that

luverlybubberly · 08/12/2021 17:53

@larkle

I feel sorry for her. We all make mistakes and plenty of politicians have done far worse. It is not nice to see any woman so upset. She appears genuinely contrite and she has apologised. Some posters appear to glory in her distress. I think she has been made the scapegoat.
Look up her interview with Shanene Thorpe. Allegra is not a nice person at all. As she's well connected, she won't be out of work for long.
LondonJax · 08/12/2021 17:53

Yes, but to say she didn't go implies she knew there was a party. The natural answer if you get asked about a party (among friends where you can have a 'giggle') would be 'what party'. She said 'I didn't go' then ''what should I say' in reply. That means she a) knew there was a party and b) didn't know how to handle the question (because she's incompetent).

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/12/2021 17:53

I suspect that such people are only sorry once they’ve been found out.

Precisely!
ancientgran · 08/12/2021 17:57
@ancientgran quite the opposite, it is not funny at all. It is appalling and disgusting. I was referring to when you said said "a LOT of people have a laugh with colleagues about stupid/ill-advised/dodgy goings on at work". I was pointing out that this may be the case but we are not talking about any workplace, we are talking about the actual government. I should have made it clear which remark I was referring to, apologies.
I didn't say that, I was replying to a previous post and that was in the quote.

Can you ask to have your post removed as it completely misrepresents what I was saying.

doublemonkey · 08/12/2021 18:01

Crying because she got caught. I'd have had a tiny glimmer of sympathy even for that if she hadn't done some spin doctoring about COD26.

The press conference is even worse. So obvious that those in the know are aware it's all a farce. People need to wake the fuck up pronto.

luverlybubberly · 08/12/2021 18:02

I know people who broke lockdown rules but I didn't grass them up to the police.

Whether or not she attended is irrelevant imo. The fact that she can have a laugh about how to retell the truth is shocking. We know that politicians do this but to see it on video Shock I think the guest list will have some every bigger names than Allegra. If they are senior journalists (like Cummings says) then will they admit it or will they conspire to keep each other's secret?

theDudesmummy · 08/12/2021 18:02

I do apologise, it was actually MadderRose who said that, I will have my posts removed.

GreenLunchBox · 08/12/2021 18:03

@Bwix

I feel sorry for her. No one knows the whole ins and outs of it. Even if she was completely and utterly culpable she’s a human and has lost her job in a humiliating way.
She'll be fine and be in another cushy job in no time. Rishi is her kid's godfather

thank you.
LondonJax · 08/12/2021 18:05

I agree @luverlybubberly. I think a lot more will come out over the next few weeks

MrsWhites · 08/12/2021 18:34

It’s not particularly fair that she is the only one to loose her job, but she made a mockery of the rules and the people abiding by them despite real hardship when she made those remarks.

I don’t feel sorry for her crying though, I feel sorry for the people like my mother in law who was crying because she couldn’t visit her husband with dementia in a care home whilst they were partying. I feel sorry for the people who have fallen into poverty because Covid rules have meant they have lost their jobs, for the people who had to sit alone at the funerals of their loved ones and for the people who had to watch their loved ones pass away over an iPad screen!

ssd · 08/12/2021 18:36

Shes pathetic

Akire · 08/12/2021 18:40

Better to nobly jump than wait to be token sacking later down the line.

ssd · 08/12/2021 18:51

Nothing noble about her

luverlybubberly · 08/12/2021 18:54

Her husband is an editor at The Spectator and had Rishi as his best man. Well connected people like Allegra will have a new job on mega bucks in no time.

Akire · 08/12/2021 18:57

@ssd

Nothing noble about her
Yes indeed should have been “nobly jump”!
MrsMadderRose · 08/12/2021 19:05

thedudesmummy yes it was me who said that, here I am! It’s not that I think it’s funny (and in fact I’m self employed partly because I couldn’t be doing with office japery and sniggering/bitching whatever).

I think what I meant was that the way they were awkwardly sniggering about something that was clearly dodgy seemed like a typical reaction to me, like loads of office conversations, yes even about illegal things. Someone suspected of doing coke, fiddling furlough or having a banned party probably wouldn’t be immediately reported to the police by their colleagues, they’d just be gossiped about, at least at first.

But you are right they are not just in any old workplace, but I think when people think they are off the record there’s plenty of bitching, joking and dark humour - in every job.

People in the know have said that The Thick of It is totally accurate for example.
