Austrian Vaccine Mandate (new details)

Some new details about the vaccine mandate in Austria have emerged today.

Repeated fines of €2000. Non payment of the fines to result in jail time. 4 weeks at first but maximum total custodial sentence of 1 year.

The unique part is that the individual concerned will be charged for their own "stay". They will have to pay for their time in the cell and for meals.

I don't know how the Austrian government is planning to have the space in prison to make this possible, but there's a mention in the article of special buildings or floors of prisons for "vaccination opponents".

*the fine is said to be "less than 2000 euros" in this article but I've seen 2k in other sources. It must still be over 1k anyway or it would be said to be less than 1k.

This is very wrong. Morally, legally and ethically. People should be able to choose what they put in their own bodies.

I have to say that does sound quite draconian…. Still if anyone feels that strongly about not being vaccinated they are EU nationals and can go and live and work in another EU country or emigrate further afield.

Well I suppose it's supposed to serve as a motivation to be vaccinated

I don't even feel sure that we would be a haven for them to come to. There was an article on BBC website today "3 reasons for and against mandatory vaccination". None of the reasons "against" were ethical concerns. They were "there could be opposition, maybe it isn't time yet and it could be counterproductive". I really feel that there's an attempt to normalise the concept in the press.

They wouldn’t need to do it here there are easier ways , if the media reported a shortage’ and some pictures of queues it would end up like the toilet paper/pasta/petrol situation

Yes they do have that option. If the UK government decided to do something similar (it won't) we wouldn't be so lucky.

I don't agree with locking people up who are not a danger to society. It only makes sense to lock up violent criminals to keep them out of everyone else's way.

Being unvaccinated is not on the same level at all.

That is utterly terrifying. Someone like me wouldn't survive very long in prison with my chronic ill health, disabilities and dietary requirements. I wouldn't have the option of moving to another country, either. It's crazy.

I’m not saying I agree with the policy, but what you’ve written is just plain wrong.

Here is the correct information so far. Fines up to €600 every three months. No mention of any jail time.

But presumably with all your chronic health conditions, you're not dim enough to be unvaccinated?

Why on earth would any publication bother to create this as a work of fiction?

The daily mail (for example) might be a rag, but they wouldn't attempt to publish complete falsehoods about parliament bills.

I'm sure it will be amended at some point to allow the unvaccinated to be detained indefinitely. Maybe in purpose built camps like they have in Australia. Definitely nothing wrong or sinister about that Hmm. Perfectly normal for a supposedly democratic country!

So what would make you get vaccinated? You are high risk for covid but the thought of dying of it isn't enough so what would persuade you?

You are exactly the type of person that this is aimed at, likely to clog up health systems but still refuses to make any mitigations so I am curious what would persuade someone like you that isn't already being done?
