Some restrictions back, fed up

Just heard the news about masks returning as of next week and changes to travelling rules.

It’s not so much that wearing a mask is inconvenient, it’s the fact that we were told restrictions were over and that we could get on with our lives.

I know I will get shot down for this post, but if it isn’t the ‘omnicron’ variant then it’ll be something else.

I’m sure many people will be in favour of tighter restrictions ‘until numbers drop’. And then what? In a few months’ time when the latest variant is out, will we have to do the same again?
“it’s just for a few weeks/months”

This isn’t going away. What’s the point of having 3 vaccines?

I’m fed up with it all, are people really prepared to do this for the foreseeable future ?

@Ireallydontcare55

As I said, it’s not the act of wearing a mask, it’s bringing back restrictions when we now have people triple jabbed, and after being told that restrictions were over. There will always be variants
we were never told restrictions were over. We were told that under the circs they could be lifted. Get your facts right
VaccineSticker · 27/11/2021 20:56

I’m not prepared to have long covid or pass it to vulnerable loved ones who I see all the time. If masks can keep a lid on the situation then I’m all for it. No one wants another lockdown. Vulnerable people are living in fear of this damn thing every day. Thank god you don’t have underlying health issues.
Plus I would like to access a hospital without it being inundated with covid patients and being turned away. But nothing I said now is new.

HTH

Sooverthemill · 27/11/2021 20:56

Yes I am prepared to do this for as long as it takes. I am CEV so is my DD. She can't leave her bed anyway but I've barely left the house since February 2020. I'd like my DD to stay alive

Pumperthepumper · 27/11/2021 20:56

@lljkk

Increased Disruption to education, training, work -- and higher inflation. Plus not seeing my dad. Those risks are what today's announcements mean to me. It's all mildly bad without being terrible, I guess.

I worry more about the long term changes in risk tolerance. I don't understand the logic of what gets decided other than a general "Because of scary covid". There are few definitional boundaries in the decisions being made which is why we get arguments, I guess, between the Lockdown Lovers & the "Get the pandemic over with" types. The fastest way to finish the pandemic is to lift all restrictions I am not recommending that, btw. Just saying the obvious -- restrictions delay spread so prolong pandemic pain. This is the real meaning of 'flatten the curve'.

What are the long term changes in risk tolerance and why do they worry you?
PilatesPeach · 27/11/2021 20:56

I still wear a mask at the shops however, not wanting to wear one is not selfish and naturally many are fed up with it coming back as mandatory again. People who feel like this are not selfish Karens - they are people with feelings and opinions as valid as anyone elses.
We all gave up so much already to protect the vulnerable - people lost houses and jobs for instance, many in debt, many lost relatives to non-Covid related illness as well as suicide from mental health issues and loneliness or lack of access to MH help because everything was about Covid.
I cannot bear the insults people get for having a different view on things. That is just wrong.

A8mint · 27/11/2021 20:57

Im not wearing a mask again

Sparklingbrook · 27/11/2021 20:57

@anxiouswaiting

I never stopped, I'm a community nurse and so glad to be having masks still when I visit peoples homes.

Having witnessed people dying of covid, families suffering, long term effects of covid etc I really can't get worked up about having to wear a mask when I go shopping.

Yes the vaccine helps reduce covid effects, but like all vaccines it is not 100% effective - I'd still have it if it were 20% effective because lives should be valued and protected where we can. I don't feel mask wearing is such a hardship to help protect the vulnerable. It isn't enjoyable wearing a mask of course, but the thought of unknowingly infecting someone when it could have been prevented is not a burden I wish to have on me.

I do understand people not wanting to be policed and told how to live their lives and I respect those views and choices even if I don't agree with them. Therefore I would hope people respect mine too - I've been sniggered and whispered about in the supermarket for wearing my mask, had people tell me I am a brainwashed sheep. It isn't necessary.

I feel I have a moral duty to those who could become very unwell and if that means wearing a mask which isnt really very invasive I don't feel it is a high price to pay.

(Of course I also know some CAN'T wear a mask and totally respect that too)

That's a great post, very measured and makes total sense. When my relative is visited by the district nurse they also wear a mask as it's only fair.

Cry babies are out in force in fear of a small cloth. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Porfre · 27/11/2021 20:58

@Ireallydontcare55

This wasn’t the right place to post this, I respect people’s attitudes are differing but it’s making me feel stressed reading how people are so accepting of things. I am not and that’s fine. So I won’t post further.
You aren't alone

Yes whereas you're clearly very mature Hmm
Clumsyvolcano · 27/11/2021 20:59

How the hell did people ever take ‘just a few weeks’ as gospel!? How?? How did they expect the government to have a crystal ball? It’s a novel virus ffs, of course there was always a possibility of some restrictions needing to return. We were told this!

Just grow up, OP. You’re worried about the fact that people have accepted it and the mask exempt are worried about being judged? Well, some people who are vulnerable will be worried for their damn lives. But that’s fine!

Lockheart · 27/11/2021 20:59

I never stopped wearing my mask in shops or on the trains to work, so this latest makes precisely zero difference to me.

tulips27 · 27/11/2021 20:59

Let's not forget there's people with an agenda trying to stir up anti-mask sentiment and they are active on popular sites like this one.

Far away from people posting from foreign troll farms, and those unfortunate enough have been taken in by them, everyone I know who can do so will be wearing a mask.

Cacee3029 · 27/11/2021 21:00

I'm not totally against restrictions but that's because they don't impact my greatly like they do with a lot of people.

Personally I can't see what mask wearing is going to do though. I highly doubt people will comply or when they do the masks will be hanging down past their nose. I am fine with wearing masks and usually do in shop and indoors. I have stopped wearing them for the odd outdoor thing that required them - completely pointless anyway if it's windy or wet.

Travel doesn't affect me as not planning any trips any time soon.

But as you say, we can't go up and down forever. I have no doubt the tougher restrictions we had did help bring numbers down but then they go back up. We can't do this forever can we.

Even with the vaccinations, I feel more anxious about covid now than I did last year before vaccinations. Up until a few months ago my area had barely any cases, now it's sky high. I know tens of people with covid right now. I didn't know one single person who had it last year.

mydogisthebest · 27/11/2021 21:00

Me and DH have never stopped wearing masks and neither have any of my family.

Where we live, in the East Midlands, lots of people have still been wearing masks unlike when we went to London last month and almost no one wore them even on the tubes and buses.

Went shopping yesterday and I would say around 90% of people were wearing masks

Because we are literally taught to trust the government ffs.
Boombastic22 · 27/11/2021 21:01

I can only presume this has been posted to be goady and indeed it seems the OP has got everyone rising to it.

But honestly, and I hate the Tories, they didn’t say there was an end to restrictions forever and anyone who thinks they did are a fool. There was always the risk of a significant variant, let’s all hope this is a false alarm and people get jabbed fast!!!

Kylereese · 27/11/2021 21:01

@Ireallydontcare55 I completely agree

RainbowBabyForChristmasPlease · 27/11/2021 21:01

The thing is we were never going to be going back to our 'old lives' not even with the vaccines. So YABU.

Glitterblue · 27/11/2021 21:02

If they didn't take any measures against this new variant, people would moan. They can't win either way.

Personally I've not stopped wearing a mask and I'd rather be safe.

Difgkdjfjffjsjs · 27/11/2021 21:02

Haven’t stopped wearing masks - seemed insane to stop, so makes no difference to me.

VaccineSticker · 27/11/2021 21:03

@Getyourarseofffthequattro
Touched a nerve?
We are in a serious situation. The immature ones are the ones kicking and screaming about a piece of cloth. I would hate to think how they would have behaved during the world wars.

Binro · 27/11/2021 21:03

I’m past caring to be perfectly honest. Want me to wear a mask on the bus or in a shop? Fine, I’ll do it and just crack on. I can’t be arsed with getting all upset about it.

Clumsyvolcano · 27/11/2021 21:03

@Getyourarseofffthequattro

The government aren’t bloody psychic though, are they? As much as I dislike the way this was handled, how the bloody hell did you expect that the rules were never open to change? Wtf?

TheEleventhMonth · 27/11/2021 21:03

My DDs school emailed on Friday to say effective from Monday masks compulsory in all public high foot traffic areas (not classrooms at present).
