Some restrictions back, fed up

Just heard the news about masks returning as of next week and changes to travelling rules.

It’s not so much that wearing a mask is inconvenient, it’s the fact that we were told restrictions were over and that we could get on with our lives.

I know I will get shot down for this post, but if it isn’t the ‘omnicron’ variant then it’ll be something else.

I’m sure many people will be in favour of tighter restrictions ‘until numbers drop’. And then what? In a few months’ time when the latest variant is out, will we have to do the same again?
“it’s just for a few weeks/months”

This isn’t going away. What’s the point of having 3 vaccines?

I’m fed up with it all, are people really prepared to do this for the foreseeable future ?

@flipflop76

I currently feel like I'd rather die of Covid or just end my life than live like this for the rest of my days. I really miss life pre covid and feel like it will never, ever return.
I get that - it's hard. Pandemics generally take a few years to settle down to a reasonable, safe 'live with it' level, so we're well into it now but unfortunately with lots of people worldwide still unvaccinated, global travel back up to much higher levels and restrictions in most countries largely removed or being ignored, mutations and spread will continue to happen for a while.

It will pass though. Every other pandemic so far has passed, and this will too. This is just something that happens - has always happened, look at the plague and smallpox and Spanish flu.

But we will, or reduce it to levels where we're fine to go about daily life. We will get there.

SpeedRunParent · 27/11/2021 20:46

I didn't stop wearing masks in supermarkets and the like. I also still use hand sanitiser on the way in and out of a shop. Nothing is changing for us. It's no big deal.

WhoWants2Know · 27/11/2021 20:46

I never stopped wearing masks in shops or at work, so I don't really care that they're becoming compulsory again

CharlotteRose90 · 27/11/2021 20:47

Covid is here to stay . I too will wear my mask in shops and at work etc. Not taking any risks . I’m vaccinated so as long as I can travel I’m happy .

LagunaBubbles · 27/11/2021 20:47

Speak for yourself...I take it you are talking about England? Wearing masks has never stopped being compulsory here in Scotland

SonicBroom · 27/11/2021 20:47

Flu rates were amazingly low last Winter, due I think to mask wearing

I’m happy with wearing masks but I think flu rates were low due to months of restrictions, lockdowns and school closures!

Bairnsmum05 · 27/11/2021 20:47

Mask wearing in shops public transport and schools has stayed here in Scotland. Unsure why England stopped.

Akire · 27/11/2021 20:48

Same as wales mask still compulsory

EmKayEm · 27/11/2021 20:48

As long as it takes the focus of the shitshow that is the Prime Minister...

WeAreTheHeroes · 27/11/2021 20:48

I have no issue with wearing a mask. I've increasingly found I'm the only person wearing one in shops. It's a minor inconvenience which will hopefully allow us to live our lives without another lockdown.

EmKayEm · 27/11/2021 20:48

*off

Alpenguin · 27/11/2021 20:48

The old way of life has gone. The world has changed. Get used to it. The selfishness of people is unbelievable. It’s so easy to be pissy about wearing a mask if you believe you’re safe and can’t pass anything on but people like myself have had the vaccine and then been told it hasn’t worked because of immunosuppressant medication and I’m expected to just wait for my turn in icu because according to some selfish Karen on the internet I’d end up in icu anyway. News to me but there you go.

Getyourarseofffthequattro · 27/11/2021 20:49

@DontWiltMySpinachPlease

If there's variants forever, then I'll wear a mask forever. It's honestly not that much of an inconvenience and I'd rather that than be struck down with covid.
Well considering masks don't protect you that's a very real possibility
lljkk · 27/11/2021 20:49

Increased Disruption to education, training, work -- and higher inflation. Plus not seeing my dad. Those risks are what today's announcements mean to me. It's all mildly bad without being terrible, I guess.

I worry more about the long term changes in risk tolerance. I don't understand the logic of what gets decided other than a general "Because of scary covid". There are few definitional boundaries in the decisions being made which is why we get arguments, I guess, between the Lockdown Lovers & the "Get the pandemic over with" types. The fastest way to finish the pandemic is to lift all restrictions I am not recommending that, btw. Just saying the obvious -- restrictions delay spread so prolong pandemic pain. This is the real meaning of 'flatten the curve'.

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 27/11/2021 20:50

some selfish Karen on the internet

Jesus wept. What's with the insults on this thread??

esloquehay · 27/11/2021 20:50

I'm with you, OP; it's bloody ridiculous. As soon as life begins to feel semi 'normal' again, a 'new' variant magically appears.

rooarsome · 27/11/2021 20:51

YANBU OP. Is this what we have to look forward to for the rest of our lives? With every variant we will see restrictions again? It's ludicrous.

SpeedRunParent · 27/11/2021 20:51

@Lovelymincepies
That's not how viruses work, they aren't uppity children. Transmission requires people share spaces to occur. If fewer people share discus, transmission is slowed / reduced.

Clymene · 27/11/2021 20:51

Yeah,the government are saying everyone should wear masks because they're completely pointless, just to piss us off. Hmm

anxiouswaiting · 27/11/2021 20:51

I never stopped, I'm a community nurse and so glad to be having masks still when I visit peoples homes.

Having witnessed people dying of covid, families suffering, long term effects of covid etc I really can't get worked up about having to wear a mask when I go shopping.

Yes the vaccine helps reduce covid effects, but like all vaccines it is not 100% effective - I'd still have it if it were 20% effective because lives should be valued and protected where we can. I don't feel mask wearing is such a hardship to help protect the vulnerable. It isn't enjoyable wearing a mask of course, but the thought of unknowingly infecting someone when it could have been prevented is not a burden I wish to have on me.

I do understand people not wanting to be policed and told how to live their lives and I respect those views and choices even if I don't agree with them. Therefore I would hope people respect mine too - I've been sniggered and whispered about in the supermarket for wearing my mask, had people tell me I am a brainwashed sheep. It isn't necessary.

I feel I have a moral duty to those who could become very unwell and if that means wearing a mask which isnt really very invasive I don't feel it is a high price to pay.

(Of course I also know some CAN'T wear a mask and totally respect that too)

PrincessPaws · 27/11/2021 20:52

They should never have got rid of masks in public places in England. Too many people are stupid enough to believe that by getting rid of restrictions it meant covid had gone, and now they are going to struggle to get people to wear them again because 'we were told restrictions were over and that we could get on with our lives'

Ffs, it's a novel virus and we are in a pandemic. They decided to let people get on with it in July, but there was clearly never a guarantee that something wouldn't change at some point

ihatebeinganadult · 27/11/2021 20:53

It just feels like a step back all the time, I've only just caught up with the news and read that face masks are to become mandatory on public transport and retail but not hospitality, surely that's where they're needed the most.
I'm not against the masks even though I haven't worn one for months, double jabbed then got covid and since had my booster, but sometimes the guidelines just don't make sense

SpeedRunParent · 27/11/2021 20:53

@MintJulia

I wear a mask for the 45 mins on the train, and 30 mins round Tesco, it's not the rest of my life.

Let's keep this in proportion.

This ^^
eveningbubble · 27/11/2021 20:54

You’re far more likely to die of cancer or Alzheimer’s Jesus wept..

SpeedRunParent · 27/11/2021 20:54

@sst1234

You are not wrong OP. Many many many people among us have been taken in by an irrational fear and almost enjoy having restrictions placed upon them because it makes them feel safe. They don’t mind being infantilized. The problem is these people really struggle to think for themselves. They struggle to see beyond the headlines. Their enthusiasm for lockdowns and other restrictions is doing untold damage to people’s lives. It is literally destroying peoples health - yes not Covid but the restrictions will kill more people in the long run. Young peoples futures are being put on the line, people’s mental health is being sacrificed. But hey, what does that all matter, when you can wear a mask to feel all warm and fuzzy inside and then go into full lockdown because you can work from home or watch movies all day with the kids on furlough.
What a load of patronising bull.
