Some restrictions back, fed up

Just heard the news about masks returning as of next week and changes to travelling rules.

It’s not so much that wearing a mask is inconvenient, it’s the fact that we were told restrictions were over and that we could get on with our lives.

I know I will get shot down for this post, but if it isn’t the ‘omnicron’ variant then it’ll be something else.

I’m sure many people will be in favour of tighter restrictions ‘until numbers drop’. And then what? In a few months’ time when the latest variant is out, will we have to do the same again?
“it’s just for a few weeks/months”

This isn’t going away. What’s the point of having 3 vaccines?

I’m fed up with it all, are people really prepared to do this for the foreseeable future ?

By the time this finally starts to properly wane, the climate crisis will really be PROPERLY kicking off (and it already is getting that way).

I don’t think our children and teens are going to get the futures they want tbh.

crumpet · 27/11/2021 23:11

Mask wearing is associated with a reduction in transmission. I don’t think this is disputed (although the % reduction might be).

whoopsnomore · 27/11/2021 23:12

@margegunderson

OP it's not normal life BECAUSE ITS A FUCKING PANDEMIC. Stop being a toddler.
Grin Grin I feel your rage and frustration. "Why does the global pandemic virus do this to meeeee??"
Timeisavirtue · 27/11/2021 23:12

Totally agree...
To wear masks to protect us from COVID and then to get ravaged by a load of different viruses... yes they are not as bad as COVID, but I’d rather not have a cluster of viruses either like I’ve just had in the last 6 weeks...

orangechairs · 27/11/2021 23:13

@Ireallydontcare55

Why would you die of Covid ? You’re far more likely to die of cancer or Alzheimer’s.
Well I've already got cancer and I'm trying really fucking hard not to die from that, so if wearing a mask helps me avoid dying from Covid I'll be delighted!
Katie517 · 27/11/2021 23:13

Bringing back masks in shops is completely pointless, so I wear one in the supermarket on Saturday morning when I am not in prolonged contact with anyone for any length of time, then Saturday afternoon I go to a gym class then for dinner with 10 friends then to a theatre show with no distancing and masks and apparently that’s fine and they expect people to go along with this level of complete unfounded nonsense. I’m done with the lot of it to be honest and every single person I have spoken to today has said the same thing. Masks don’t work If the vaccine doesn’t stop any variant from spreading then a flimsy piece of cloth over my mouth won’t either.

Mischance · 27/11/2021 23:13

What a fucked up world Well ....that's what viruses do .... they fuck up our lives. Just a fact of life - however much we hate it. We can't just lie back and wait for the virus to kill more people.

If we do nothing then the virus will be rubbing its hands in glee and taking the opportunity to produce more variants. And then more.

Either we put up a fight or we don't.

same mask?
Wideawakeandconfused · 27/11/2021 23:14

OP I completely agree with you.

I don’t disagree with the need for masks and other restrictions that may or may not come in, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t miss our pre- covid carefree life. This all feels like temporary living and I find it hard to accept that this is likely to be our reality for the foreseeable future.

I’ll suck it up but I don’t like that we are in this position.

Mydogmylife · 27/11/2021 23:14

@Akire

I never stopped wearing a mask when it’s the easiest thing you can do to protect yourself and others. So no change for me
I'm in Scotland - we've never stopped, along with Wales and Ireland - it's no big deal. Op needs to wake up to the fact that this IS normal life for the foreseeable , no matter how much you may wish it wasn't
WineGetsMeThroughIt · 27/11/2021 23:15

Can I just clarify one thing?

When are all these new rules set to take into effect? I didn't see anything in the press releases or the news about that?

Undisclosedlocation · 27/11/2021 23:17

@RampantIvy

So, what do you suggest instead then *@Undisclosedlocation*?
Honestly? Beyond the vaccines and medications which the scientists have been fabulous with, I don’t think there is an awful lot we can do. It is going to run its course whatever we do.

Obviously we could go the full lockdown route to buy time but I haven’t seen anyone advocating for that just yet? And it has huge other ‘costs’ in terms of health and well-being, not to mention jobs to do that which would need VERY careful judgement as to which was worse for us overall
Fiddling about with a scrap of badly fitting material over our faces is going to make naff all difference

MiddayMass · 27/11/2021 23:17

@WineGetsMeThroughIt

I assumed that the lack of a date means it’s happening straight away.

enforced mask wearing? well, never. it can't be enforced so just do what you prefer to do
Cariah · 27/11/2021 23:19

You can get on with your life. Restrictions have not been reintroduced. Wearing a mask is not a restriction. In fact if anything the mask will help you get on with your life by reducing the spread of Covid.

anon12345anon · 27/11/2021 23:20

OP I completely agree with you...

LesLavandes · 27/11/2021 23:20

OP. Boring, selfish, thinking about you, you and you. 🙄

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 27/11/2021 23:21

Some people are so pathetic and selfish

How much of an inconvenience is putting a mask on. Get a grip.

You are saving lives.

AledsiPad · 27/11/2021 23:21

Zotter

I don’t care. I really don’t anymore.

We are not more important than nature. People are going to die - we will all die eventually. Why are we so special that we think we can evade nature?

I’d rather die than live like this forever.

Keyboardkaterina · 27/11/2021 23:22

There are some people who would wear masks and endure endless lockdowns and restrictions permanently, yes. Some of them have been frightened witless by 18 months of relentless fear mongering by governments and the media and don’t know how to go back to living normally. Then there are others, who I don’t think had much going on in their lives in the first place, who are enjoying this. And others still who are using covid and restrictions to show us what morally superior beings they are with their daft bits of dirty material on their faces and ritual covid tests three times a week
and stupid #staythefuckhome #wearadamnmask on Twitter. I actually know someone who has CHANGED HIS NAME on Twitter to ‘WEAR A MASK!’ It has become a religion for some and I’ve noticed quite a few people I know have become genuine fanatics, filled with real intolerance and rage towards anyone who questions the validity and efficacy of the restrictions we are having enforced.

Op I agree with you totally we have to live now I don't come on Mumsnet as much anymore ..... all of them completely over react ... I know covid is real /I know it kills / but for my mental health cannot live like this .. watch the suicides do up amd for anyone saying they haven't they fucking have I know from first hand

AledsiPad · 27/11/2021 23:24

And for those who say ‘this is normal for the foreseeable,’ no. No, it’s normal until the rest of you realise it will only carry on as long as the public comply.

More and more do the public will refuse to comply - look at Europe. What is inevitable is public refusal, not this becoming ‘normal.’
