We had our higher rates a few weeks back, much higher than England

Tulipomania · 20/10/2021 17:55

FFS.

Why can't this government take some responsibility and make masks compulsory in certain situations, as many other European countries have done.

It feels like they are putting the onus on us, yet again. So it won't be their fault when the impact gets to an unacceptable level.

toomuchlaundry · 20/10/2021 17:55

When did you have your first vaccine @MercyBooth? The booster is sometimes going to be Pfizer so I assume they might allow you to mix now

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 20/10/2021 17:56

@DottyHarmer

Tired of plonkers moaning about not being able to get the booster (although at least they want the vaccine) when they are not yet six months past second dose.

It does seem depressing today, what with escalating cases and a new variant thrown in for good measure Sad

Except...

It was announced that all Clinically Extremely Vulnerable should be offered a booster by October 11th.

I went for my booster, and in fact I was a couple of weeks early.

They gave it to me anyway, but I would argue the communication has been poor.

WouldBeGood · 20/10/2021 17:56

Highest in Europe!

Mindareno · 20/10/2021 17:57
@Mindareno

I desperately don’t want to end up in another lockdown either. We have to ask ourselves why is Europe experiencing significantly lower numbers than us right now? The answer is that most countries there are taking a middle way — continuing masking, implementing vaccine passports, continuing to encourage some WFH.

The vaccines should not be put under this much pressures, they should not be a solo defence.
Masking and working from home I agree (I don’t think masks will make enough of a difference without social distancing based on the closest thing we have to a RCT from Bangladesh but I’m wearing mine and I think it’s as well to as every little helps).

Vaccine passports are trickier, however if it’s a choice between them and a further lockdown, they’re the lesser of two evils. But the point stands - how long for? What’s going to happen to render it no longer necessary?

GoodnightGrandma · 20/10/2021 17:57

Read on the DM that Morocco is refusing flights from the UK from midnight

whynotwhatknot · 20/10/2021 17:58

i was in group 6 last time does that mean i might be eligible (not over 50)

MercyBooth · 20/10/2021 17:58

@toomuchlaundry on the 27th July.

I was told VERY firmly that there is no way they will mix them.

Ridingthegravytrain · 20/10/2021 18:00

Course they won’t implement plan b yet. Because then everyone will see it doesn’t work. They need to do it AFTER so it looks like it worked and they can justify it. A bit like all their lockdowns

VickyEadieofThigh · 20/10/2021 18:02

@WouldBeGood

Masks make no difference. Scotland has masks and has had just as high rates
Why - and this is a genuine question - do you think our infection rates are massively higher than any other country, given that European countries have retained masks, etc?

Here is the eligibility criteria @whynotwhatknot
Mynameismargot · 20/10/2021 18:03

If wearing a mask makes you feel safer - wear it. If having the jab makes you feels safer - have it. Make your own health choices and let others make their own. If going out when others aren’t masked frightens you, don’t go out.

Mmm it's not just about making people feel safer though is it? I ended up in icu recently with sepsis, fortunately for me, they had theatre space to do emergency surgery, Drs and nurses to treat me and an icu bed for me to recover in. This happens to people everyday, they need medical treatment and they need it right at that moment, they need hospitals to be functioning.

It's all well and good saying let people make their own choices if it only impacts them but unvaccinated people are clogging up hospitals really unnecessarily. They are opting out of a really easy way for them to vastly reduce the chance of them ending up in hospital. To pretend that the unvaxxed population are having no effect on people who have done the right thing and gotten vaccinated is disingenuous. It isn't just about a bunch of paranoid people needing the reassurance of masks as you seem to be alluding to.

"It doesn't like the warm weather"

🤣

Covid sounds like a lot of mumsnetters then.

MercyBooth · 20/10/2021 18:04

@FlibbertyGiblets Christ thats even worse. That is ridiculous.

whynotwhatknot · 20/10/2021 18:04

loads of people have had mixed doses already dont know why they told you that mercy

Poetrypatty · 20/10/2021 18:04

Government trying to blame the public again. What is the point of this press conference? Just saying how bad things might get but taking no steps to change anything Confused It just adds to peoples stress levels for no benefit.

user1471518295 · 20/10/2021 18:04

We are in the Algarve and our rates are reducing - probably because it is still 26 degrees during the day and we are all still outside most of the time!

CEV and 6 months past second dose here and no sign of a booster...

Just listening to some bollocks on this news conference about how they are offering boosters to millions.

And how if you don't get the invite you can book on line.

No. No you fucking can't.

It’s so people book booster I don’t think being clear on that is a bad thing.

Also lots of ‘people have done well’ which we have

whynotwhatknot · 20/10/2021 18:06

@MilesJuppIsMyBitch

thanks miles prob not eligible then
Lovelymincepies · 20/10/2021 18:06

MercyBooth I know of people that have had mixed first and second doses, it was due to having such a bad reaction to the first but I would say that if the distance is stopping you get you getting your second then you could try persuading them. Try and get your GP on board with this.

I had Astra for my 1st and 2nd and then Pfizer for my booster. Those that are vulnerable are having should be having there 3rd before the 6 months and in some cases this is working out to be 8 weeks after their 2nd so I see no reason why you could not have a different 2nd. The main thing is to be fully vaccinated.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 20/10/2021 18:07

I expect it'll be offered to everyone eventually, @whynotwhatknot .

MarshaBradyo · 20/10/2021 18:08

Oh and do LFT before meeting at risk person

I think that’s a good idea actually
