Will a vaccine centre give 16yo a second jab?

Second jab booked for this weekend. Will they give it when he has no underlying conditions?

When he had the first jab, the walk in centre were very vague on booking the second jab - some of the people working there said yes book it for 8 weeks, others said don’t book it as he’s not eligible. I think another person said nothing had been decided so they didn’t know if he should book a second jab or not.

So we went online and it let us book. This time a local centre

Sorry posted too soon. I don’t want to drive 20 miles if they’ll just turn him away! Anyone know if 16yo’s are getting a second jab at the moment, or are being turned away?

DD16 is going to try a walk-in as soon as she's 8 weeks past her first but am fully expecting her to get turned away. It's 20 minute walk for us though, not a 20 mile drive.
She wants it, (has a part time job with small children and commutes to school on public transport) and I must add I am uncomfortable with medication not being given to manufacturer's dosing schedules (which we didn't realise at the time of having first dose, just told we would "be contacted" about booking 2nd dose).
Risk of myocarditis is low in girls so I can't think why they don't allow them full protection.

TBH I think a 20 drive is a small price to pay for the chance of a second jab. Millions of people around the world would cheerfully drive 2000 miles for a 50% chance of the vaccine

To many countries you can. But it would involve quarantine when you get there, and/or regular (not cheap) antigen or PCR tests once you’re there, to keep your covid pass topped up to access restaurants or museums.

Europe fully vaccinated all over 12s this summer. Anything else and you’re considered unvaccinated.

It's unlikely they will give jabs outside these who qualify under the national programme.

And as it's single jabs for that age group (unless certain factors apply) then I wouldn't make a journey expecting them to break the rules for you

It's quite a struggle to get those who do qualify for a second jab done (household CEV), and have previously been turned away despite being eligible and booked through the national online system

No. I really don’t think they will. My daughters was cancelled and they were turning those that turned up away at the vaccination centre last week.

When dd had first jab the centre automatically booked date for second one. Received text reminding about it and it's next week.

I'm a vaccinator & we would turn him away I'm afraid. We aren't allowed to vaccinate him under the national protocol.

As EileenGC has said that’s not universally true.

Some countries do allow entry to individuals not fully vaccinated but it may come with extra conditions attached such as a period of isolation post arrival and/or frequent testing when in country, especially before attending mass gatherings, going into restaurants, cinemas etc.

I don’t know why it let you book. As Cookerhood said, we’re not allowed to give healthy 16 year olds with no underlying conditions (unless they’re coded as carers or health and care workers) a second jab.

I doubt he’ll get it.

He would get turned away at the clinics I work with unless he lives with someone immuno suppressed or works in the health/care sector which of course he would need to prove either.

I very much doubt they will get it. It's only CV/CEV or those who live with CEV people in the household.

DS16 is booked for first jab. The booking procedure said no 2nd jab for 16 year olds.

@PheasantsNest sadly I can't get my GP to double jab my 16 year old even though my DD13 is CEV. There seems to be no way to get him a second dose. DD due to have her second and will have a third in 6 months.

I think there is some confusion because when we first started vaccinating 16/17 year olds it was assumed that they would have a second dose. We now know that's not the case (at least for now) so those who were told this, or even given an appointment at the time, will still be turned away.

I doubt he’ll get it.

We were told it was fault in the system. I had assumed that as we could book online, but only for certain centres (we had to travel to next council area) they were directing us only to centres where they would definitely vaccinate qualfiyng children (you have to enter dob, she's correctly coded as household). And that was of course worth the journey

Still bounced at the centre, and told that they were seeing a lot oin our circumstances. And had no idea how to get a second jab in to a clearly qualifying teen

He’ll be turned away. It’s a clear “computer says no” situation. Vaccinators are not allowed to deviate from the rules set out which is that unless there’s a specific reason, 16 year olds won’t get a second jab.

If DD requires a third primaries mary, then thus can be given any time after 6 weeks.

She will receive her booster 6 months after she completes her 3-part primary course.

Make sure the third jab is correctly recorded as a third primary, or else you'll end up in admin nightmare when her six month booster (which for her will be fourth jab) comes die.

Yes, your other DC should qualify, and you'll need to keep at your GP - mine tried to told I was wasting their time, wouldn't believe me when I said 119 said household CEV must arrange through GP not them, and only when I had evidence of DC being refused second part on the day did they then do - on the same day - what they had been refusing to do for three weeks, which was send an individual email to local drop in centre, who could then do it.

That's clearly not the case. It's half term week in Scotland, I know personally of families who have gone to the Balearic islands with a 12 and 15 year old (one jab each) and another which has gone to Crete with a 13 and 16 year old, also with one jab each.

My 16 yr old DC got a text from the system inviting to second jab. Appointment booked using DoB.
Was turned away at appointment- text sent in error.

As a matter of interest how do you do this? Certainly last week them was no place on the system to record 3rd primary doses so we've been adding it to the clinical notes in the hope that it helps in the future.
DH has been told to ensure that his is recorded as a 3rd primary but I'd love to know how.
