Will a vaccine centre give 16yo a second jab?

Second jab booked for this weekend. Will they give it when he has no underlying conditions?

When he had the first jab, the walk in centre were very vague on booking the second jab - some of the people working there said yes book it for 8 weeks, others said don’t book it as he’s not eligible. I think another person said nothing had been decided so they didn’t know if he should book a second jab or not.

So we went online and it let us book. This time a local centre

No-one will deviate from this and turning up anywhere to push for it will end in disappointment.

But some centres will deviate from this and have. Our local walk in centre freely advertises second doses to anyone over 16 provided it's 8 weeks after their first. My son and many of his friends have received second doses at various local centres while not qualifying on age or other grounds.

Well my question has been answered in the form of a text from the nhs cancelling his jab. So I guess that’s that for now.

The booking system has been a bloody nightmare.

What’s gone wrong? We were doing so well with the rollout and now it seems to be being run by a bunch of clowns.

choirmumoftwo · 14/10/2021 23:16

@ppp4321 that's quite concerning and definitely against national protocol and NHS guidance.

ppp4321 · 15/10/2021 07:48

In reality, it's not clear cut. My son would be able to get his second vaccination three months before his 18th birthday, in four months' time. But he's unlikely to have a different level of risk of myocarditis now, than in four months' time, which creates a grey area.

Personally, I think parents should have the choice whether to double vaccinate their over 12s because it makes visiting family (and holidays) overseas difficult, particularly in Europe. Chris Whitty was open in sharing that vaccinating over 12s with even one dose was a marginal decision, principally due to the myocarditis risk. (Appreciate the risk is raised further with the second). Their decision was influenced heavily by disruption to education and wider protection for society, so I don't think it's unreasonable for parents to want their kids to qualify for less onerous travel restrictions with a second vaccination as part of their decision making process on vaccinations for kids.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but the current rules are actually very clear.

Took my DS to a walk in centre this morning for his first jab as he turned 16 yesterday. As we are still battling the GP to allow a second jab ( even though the CCG confirmed he was eligible ) we asked at the centre and they made a note to say he lives with an immunosuppressed person and told us to just bring him back in 8 weeks. We asked if we needed to bring proof of our DD's illness and medication and she said no don't worry we've made a note and we will give him a second jab no problem!

Schulte · 16/10/2021 12:22

Yay - result! Glad you’ve got it sorted!

BatShitBitchChops · 16/10/2021 12:54

I think most who are eligible for a 2nd will get a letter. My 16yr old Ds was told no by the gp as he is 16 and yet we just got an nhs letter saying as he is more at risk to get a 2nd jab. I'll take him in half term and see what happens.

Schulte · 19/10/2021 11:09

We're now coming up to the 8 weeks so my DDs are due their next jab next week, but no word from the GP. Anyone else still waiting?

3asAbird · 20/10/2021 06:12

I don't understand why this has been handled so badly.
None of our vaccination centres say under 16 and parents passed pillar to post.
Plus gp message as you wait an hour we not willing to discuss covid vaccines jabs.
If people can't central book as says ineligible and gp say not my concern .
Maybe try complaint to ccg.

Have some 16 and 17year old managed get.

Good luck everyone. Hopefully now they opening up vaccination centres for teens things improve.

WhatHaveIFound · 26/10/2021 10:44

DS didn't get his second jab today despite GP surgery telling him to book it. It wasn't logged on their system so he was turned away. Luckily it was our closest vaccination centre so only 30 mins wasted.

I'm hoping that since he has long covid the chance of him catching it again (after just one jab) are still quite small.

ihearttc · 27/10/2021 08:27

I can’t believe there hasn’t been more media coverage regarding this. DS1 (16) had Covid back in February and has had 1 vaccine. But for purposes of travel is still classed as unvaccinated.
So me, DH and DS2 (who is 10 and hasn’t had Covid) can travel but DS1 can’t. We were supposed to be going to Florida last year but couldn’t do booked again for next year but he still won’t be 18 so won’t be able to go.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 27/10/2021 08:31

What is also not clear for all age groups 12+ is what happens if the gap between both doses is longer than recommended because this rubbish government haven't thought things through. Will this still be effective and will it count as being fully vaccinated?

ihearttc · 27/10/2021 08:39

@SilverGlitterBaubles

Yes I was also wondering that. I assumed once they hit 18 they’d have to start both vaccine doses again.

Longer gaps seem to give better immunity in lots of studies. The shorter gaps we’ve gone for are to give everyone immunity more quickly while there’s a lot of virus around.
SilverGlitterBaubles · 27/10/2021 08:48

@PurpleDaisies Yes I understand that this is the case however is there a point where say a gap of 6/12 months would mean that it is not or wouldn't be recognised for travel ?

TheExtraGuineaPig · 27/10/2021 08:48

I'm also surprised they're not reconsidering the second dose for 12-15s yet. It's been widely distributed amongst that age group across Europe and the risk is tiny compared to the risk associated with having Covid. People who are anti giving their teens the vaccine at all will already have opted out before dose 1, most people who agree with dose 1 would like the option for the second.

I will admit to having a personal reason - we are mixed European heritage and travel with a teen makes everything so much more difficult (and a risk of DD isolating)

Why wouldn’t it? The travel rules are all about the number of vaccines, not the gap.

What was your thinking behind saying they’d have to restart the vaccination process at 18?

cassgate · 27/10/2021 08:58

Think the government need to sort out with governments around the world what is required for international travel. I am waiting to book USA holiday for next year. Have Dd doing A levels and DS doing GCSEs. We have had two holidays to the USA cancelled and have open flight tickets to use. As it stands we won’t be able to go as 3 of us will be double jabbed but DS just turned 16 by then will have only have had 1 so not fully vaccinated according to US rules. This is a global pandemic so there needs to be some joined up thinking and a global policy on vaccination and travel.

Wishfulthinking1977 · 27/10/2021 09:03

@cassgate agreed! My friend took her 16 year old for his first yesterday, asked about booking his second and was told no 2nd until he hits 18?! She asked about travel (as that's why she had him done!) was told fine to travel as he has had 1?! Makes no sense if other countries are only allowing double regardless of age!

myrtilles · 27/10/2021 09:04

I could not be more angry about this issue. 16 year olds were encouraged to get vaccinations on the basis there would be a second and now the option of a second dose has been removed. Had people known they would not be properly vaccinated they might not have chosen to have a vaccine. The vaccine manufacturers say you need a second dose for proper protection and other countries vaccinated 12+ before the start of term with two doses. Why should 16 yr olds not be allowed to be properly protected? Furthermore they are restricted on foreign holidays and if allowed into countries like France there is the hassle and cost of regular pharmacy tests and greater risk of catching covid on holiday and having to quarantine. No school trips to Europe are going to be practical whilst the uk government prevents teenagers from being vaccinated. The decision to have a first or second vaccination should be for parents and teens to make with the government advising on the small risk involved. 12-15s are also in this situation.

Pinkyxx · 27/10/2021 15:55

I'm also livid about this. I don't understand why millions of 12-15 year olds globally have been allowed to receive 2 vaccines yet my child isn't permitted to.

Let's just pretend kids/teens don't share germs and spread them literally everywhere they go.

TwoBlueFish · 27/10/2021 16:00

My DS17 had his 2nd jab booked but it was cancelled due to his age ☹️

He lives with his brother who is CEV, so we were really hoping that he’d be able to get it done.
