Will a vaccine centre give 16yo a second jab?

Second jab booked for this weekend. Will they give it when he has no underlying conditions?

When he had the first jab, the walk in centre were very vague on booking the second jab - some of the people working there said yes book it for 8 weeks, others said don’t book it as he’s not eligible. I think another person said nothing had been decided so they didn’t know if he should book a second jab or not.

So we went online and it let us book. This time a local centre

@Cookerhood @nether My third primary still hasn't been recorded as nobody seems to know how to do it.

Seriously79 · 13/10/2021 09:39

@KingsleyShacklebolt I was thinking of the US specifically. When I last looked, if you hadn't had 2 jabs you'd have to quarantine for 10 days. That's a bit tricky on a 2 week holiday.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 13/10/2021 09:45

@nether I had no idea about this! I assumed the third dose would be in 180 days like it is for everyone else. It does all seem a bit of a mes. I received a text saying I'd been identified as needing a third dose. I assumed it was because I'm over 50. When I phoned to get advice I was told it actually was my DD who needs the third dose which is strange considering she hasn't had her second one yet!

It is always a struggle to get anyone at the surgery to help as their default position is that they do not vaccinate under 16s. They told me I had to call the schools vaccination scheme to ask about her vaccine ( they don't even answer the phone !) They even doubted me when I reminded them that they had in fact vaccinated my 13 year old on their premises. They have now booked her in for a second dose and it will be done at the surgery but I've no idea what will happen about the third or even when it's supposed to happen now!

I did have some NHS guidance printed out on vaccines for under 16s living with a Cev person but the surgery still aren't interested and when I tried to link the info the page had been removed.

Does anyone here have access to these guidelines that I show my surgery?

My son is 16 on Friday and there is still no sign that the school are going to arrange these vaccinations so I will be taking him to a walk in centre to have his first jab on Saturday morning instead.

I don't know how to get it properly recorded as a third primary.

Our GP is (finally) running an extra clinic for third primaries this weekend and the severely immune compromised person in our household is being done then (its not all CEV, just the 500,000 most immune suppressed). They'll ask then what's happening about how it's being recorded, and what we need to do to get the 6month booster when it falls due.

It's also about 6 months since their second dose, but we're hoping that going through the GP will mean it's properly recorded at some point. The system has been really shite for this jab - they were meant to be in arms from mid September onwards (announced 2/09 and meant to be underway before boosters were even announced) but the admin had been a total fail

It's on page 2 of this:

We are going to try in half term (18 in April) 1st dose in August

PheasantsNest · 13/10/2021 10:02

@AngelsWithSilverWings if you Google Green book coronavirus all the information is there.

Is this for CEV? Or household contacts of CEV? If not I wouldn't waste your time.

plk323 · 13/10/2021 10:11

My 17 year old (not 18 until another 8 months) had his second this morning. I called the pharmacy yesterday and they said they'd vaccinate him as they had Pfizer open.

That said, when I got there, the vaccinator was less keen and I think only agreed as I have surgery in a month. But our drop in centre states it's open for second jabs for over 16s provided it's 8 weeks after the first one. And my son's friends have also had second vaccinations despite not qualifying on age grounds (18 in 3 months).

It's all a bit confusing. Understand the raised risk of myocarditis for boys on the second jab but, as others have said, the benefit of having two for travel is significant. In all honesty, that was the main motivation for him being vaccinated.

Cookerhood · 13/10/2021 10:16

They need to be 17y9m according to the guidelines

AngelsWithSilverWings · 13/10/2021 10:42

Thank you @nether I've now spoken to the CCG who have confirmed that my GP is wrong and that if he still won't agree to double vacc my DS I need to get a letter from them or GOSH confirming that my DD is immunosuppressed and they will organise it for me. They also said I should make a formal complaint as DS should have been vaccinated under these guidelines before he went back to school ( I tried but they refused)

plk323 · 13/10/2021 10:45

I think this must be a grey area though as I know numerous 16 and 17 year olds who've had their second jab without qualifying under the immunocompromised criteria (nor are their parents). Here's the advice at our local clinic

WhatHaveIFound · 13/10/2021 12:11

DS has his 2nd jab booked for during half term at the advice of our GP surgery. However I received a text to say that he should cancel if not in an eligible group. Phoned the surgery for advice and they said to phone 119 or just turn up so I have no idea what I should do next!

traumatisednoodle · 13/10/2021 13:00

We would like to go to Canada in December tickets already postponed from last year. I think it's worth a punt.

NotMrsTumble · 13/10/2021 13:39

DS (17) is the only non-CEV or CEV household member in his school who's been double vaccinated. We were very quick off the mark getting first dose and appointment for his second dose auto - generated. He was super keen to get second dose even with the potential side effects. I dropped him at the local centre fully expecting to get a call from him asking me to come in and help him make a case to the medic in charge if he was refused a second dose (he volunteers twice a week in an indoor setting with primary age children who are still ineligible for vaccination, and is worried about passing infection on to grandparents). As it was, not an eyelid was batted and he was given his second vaccine without question. His peers have not been as lucky and have had any appointments cancelled.

I do think the 16&17 year olds are a grey area. Surely very little will change in their individual risk profiles between the age of 16 & 17y9m when they WOULD be eligible? They are classed as adults for making medical decisions so should arguably be able to decide for themselves whether they would like a second dose or are happy with the c.55% protection one dose offers.

GreenLakes · 13/10/2021 18:30

No- he will rightly be turned away as he is at more risk from a second dose than from covid.

Kjcf · 13/10/2021 18:49

Children under 18 don’t have to quarantine to go abroad if travelling with vaccinated adult, but they will need tests, even if had 1 jab. Some countries like Italy, France and Greece require tests every 48 / 72 hours to go inside restaurants, cafes, swimming pools and museums. Just one dose won’t class then as being fully vaccinated. It’s a massive pain.

He probably won't get vaccinated. We've been told today that (healthy) under 18s only get one jab for now.

I could well be wrong but I think that is something that is very much country specific.

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 13/10/2021 19:26

My daughter was refused the second jab this morning. I took with me when I went for mine just in case and they said definitely no way.

plk323 · 13/10/2021 19:26

But some centres are vaccinating (healthy) 16s and 17s with second doses. Most of my son's school friends have had their second vaccinations. The centres must be using their discretion as they don't qualify on age (3 months until 18) or immunocomprised criteria.

1lifeliveitright · 13/10/2021 22:05

My 17 yr old dd works in a nursery. I also work in the childcare sector and was classed as a frontline health and social care worker when I got my 1st vaccine.
Dd has had 1st jab. Wonder if they'd give her a 2nd due to her job?

BunsyGirl · 14/10/2021 05:25

@Kjcf your advice is wrong. For example, 12 and overs cannot travel to Malta unless they have had two vaccinations. That rule has been in place for months.

nether · 14/10/2021 05:57

Teachers and childcare staff do not count as heath or social care staff and so do not fall in to the current priority list

If your DD was working in social care, then yes she would be eligible for a second jab (may need proof from employer)
