well it does make sense, in covid terms, but one person only would be better.

Ours have a one person at a time rule. So I just talk to myself.

I think it's a sensible small measure to reduce risk of droplets being spread. I'd like to introduce a "no shouting thank you to the bus driver" rule. I know it's nice for the driver, but shouting spreads droplets.

I used to hold my breath in a lift up to my 8th floor flat.

The main, only, reason for this was that the lift doubled up as a urinal.

I would have walked but had my bike with me to get to/from work.

Perhaps if people speak downwards - which would also have the added benefit of minimal eyecontact!

Well no. Things change in a global pandemic. Wouldn't have expected the government - especially this one - to pay so many people to stay home either but that's global pandemics for you - complete game changers ¯\(ツ)/¯
