I think this is taking covid rules too far.
AIBU?

Just when you think you've heard it all 😂
Roolz!
Ridiculous

IrisLilyRose · 10/09/2021 15:20

Sensible advice. Talking generates loads more aerosols

NCBlossom · 10/09/2021 16:11

This is really worrying as it will change society as we know it

This is SUCH an overreaction!

Not talking for 5 minutes is changing society as we know it? I don’t think so.

Or taking 5 minute to realise that an elderly person who doesn’t take the stairs who is vulnerable would be much safer if you didn’t talk? Now that is the society I want to live in.

A considerate one.

SMBH · 10/09/2021 17:02

It’s pretty hard to stop my toddler and 3yo talking in the lift tbh
Presumably less of an issue in the op’s office building, but still

Topseyt · 10/09/2021 17:05

Sounds like a rule that is there to be ignored. Especially if you are with a friend.

FeedMeSantiago · 10/09/2021 17:18

Our office is only allowing one person in the lift at a time! Fortunately I'm on the ground floor.

Nope. Not an overreaction on my part, but whichever idiotic dictator decided on this rule, they are over reacting.

Nope. Creep creep into changing things. Do you not look around you?! Honestly if you think it's normal to ban people from talking, well you aren't thinking straight.

Stuffin · 10/09/2021 17:35

Those small informal human interactions that are now being banned will have a longer impact than covid.

never been in a library then

or in a building where there's an exam?

not talking for a few minutes isn't a problem for most people

marieantoinehairnet · 10/09/2021 18:02

Ours has markers on the floor and you have to all stand with your backs to each other, not helped by the mirrors!

A lot of elderly people love to have someone to smile and say hello to and you're saying its safer not to talk to them? For their own good and the greater good????? Now that is a total over reaction. That's also not a considerate society. At all.

Confused

Cars...
Computers...
Mobile phones...

I think we'll manage to deal with the earth shattering temporary change in lift interactions, somehow.

NearlyAlwaysInsane · 10/09/2021 19:35

A 'rule' that will promptly be ignored.

And rightly so. Crack on.

*Caveat: I never speak in lifts, even when with people I know.....mostly because I don't like being overheard and/or talking when in tight confinement with lots of others.

welliesarefuntowear · 10/09/2021 19:37

Anything about a no shagging rule?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 10/09/2021 21:03

I would guess if you're both wearing masks it would be acceptable, you'd have to be quick though, and hope the other people in the lift don't notice... Shock
Dragonpox · 10/09/2021 21:05

Can you hum in morse code?

Peteycat · 10/09/2021 22:56

"never been in a library then

You don't have a be quiet in libraries anymore. That got scrapped a while ago. Obviously you can't go in there screaming or giving a rendition of a Pavarotti classic, but yes you can talk. An exam is not a good example, as you know it's an exam. A lift is a communal area. It's very different.

Peteycat · 10/09/2021 22:57

As long as you have sanitised your bits and put a mask over the genitalia, I think you should be fine.

marmaladehound · 10/09/2021 23:15

It's extreme and I doubt backed by much science! I have worked throughout the pandemic at a very large hospital and looked after many patients with Covid. We have never been told not to talk in a lift. Why not tell you to hold your breath ffs! Bloody stupid.

MinesAMassiveSalad · 10/09/2021 23:19

There is science that has backed it. Talking generates far more droplets and aerosols than just breathing.

NCBlossom · 10/09/2021 23:32

@marmaladehound it’s really not stupid at all and is totally backed up by masses of evidence.

Most transmission is by breathing in the air of someone with Covid. Most transmission happens indoors where the covid infected air does not escape. Transmission increases quite a lot with talking, then coughing/shouting/singing. Transmission increases the smaller the space.

Delta is also much more transmissible more quickly.

Before it might have been at least 15 minutes of talking in an inside space, so being in lifts would not have been so much of a risk as a few minutes of the original ‘covid’ would probably not infect you. Now it probably would.

NCBlossom · 10/09/2021 23:36

A lot of elderly people love to have someone to smile and say hello to and you're saying its safer not to talk to them? For their own good and the greater good?????

Yes for the sake of a few minutes silence in a lift, I think most older people would rather not risk dying from Covid than talking about the weather. And being unmasked in close contact, talking, in a lift is a fairly high risk.

Much higher risk than outside (where it’s safe enough to be honest) and much higher than the example of a hospital where masks are still being worn.

It’s not that hard to shut up for a few minutes… (waits for responses!)

GCAcademic · 10/09/2021 23:38

You should get your employer to issue you all with one of these.

It would also be really fun as you could pretend you were being launched into space as you went up to your office in the lift.

Office lift has a 'no talking rule'
XenoBitch · 10/09/2021 23:44

I read that farts can spread Covid.. don't a lot of people fart in the lift?

Being serious now, I worked in a hospital for years and the only time me and my colleagues could have a rant about work was in the lift (obviously no members of the public were also in there with us).

herecomesthsun · 10/09/2021 23:46

Hmm, is it more English not to have a chat (as on the Tube? no one ever chats on the Tube? English reserve etc) or to grumble a bit about the weather?

Could go either way.
