Office lift has a 'no talking rule'

I think this is taking covid rules too far.
AIBU?

OP posts:

@Hercisback

And my risk assessment in that scenario would be that it's far far far less risky than my classroom so I'd talk anyway.
Do you honestly think this way? That isn't a risk assessment. How necessary is the thing I want to do, what are the dangers, what can I do to mitigate the dangers if I really have to do the thing.

Not "I have to do this risky thing every day, so I'll just do loads of other risky things as well."

onelittlefrog · 10/09/2021 08:10

I have noticed most lifts have a one person/ household at a time rule.

If they are allowing multiple people in such a small space then no talking does make sense to limit the spread.

Hercisback · 10/09/2021 08:42

@TheSmallAssassin The increased risk of being in a lift with 2-3 people is so so tiny.

Peteycat · 10/09/2021 10:51

Do you realise how bonkers you sound? Honestly we're humans we communicate via talking mainly. This is really worrying as it will change society as we know it of the idiots doing these things carry on. It's talking, not hurting anyone. For anyone who says anything about catching covid, everywhere is open, people are back to work and school so life is trying to get back to normal. There are still a few that are creating utterly absurd 'rules', however I have faith that most people have rational minds.

herecomesthsun · 10/09/2021 10:59

So

  • I comply with the rules of an organisation where I can (as Chris Whitty has suggested that he does) as it's courteous
  • some places (eg our local John Lewis last time we went) have had signs up suggesting one household only in a lift and people were keeping to that

Individual rules may seem idiosyncratic but as a general principle the "3 C"s quoted by JVT work pretty well, (ie trying to avoid places which are crowded/closed in/ close contact). I can sort of see how that would apply to a lift.

  • I take the stairs where I can rather than a lift as it's healthier anyhow 9and then I don't have to bother about any of this Smile
Peteycat · 10/09/2021 11:20

It's getting bloody silly. In fact it's becoming unbearable all this over reaction.

lannistunut · 10/09/2021 11:36

I genuinely don't understand why people think doing something so small is 'unbearable'?

I think people need to calm down and just try to focus on the bigger picture.

The business has presumably identified in their risk assessment that there is a transmission risk in confined spaces. This is not new information.

What is the actual harm of following this?

itsgrand · 10/09/2021 11:40

no talking in the lift cos of covid?
what about farting? can you still do that in the lift?
at least with no talking you can fart and no one can mention it Grin

Agree. It's like people saying 'omg you picked up that toddler, I can't believe you picked up someone else's toddler how can you live with yourself' and then it's revealed that the toddler was happily toddling into a boating lake. Different circumstances, different behaviours.

But farting in a lift might release dangerous Covid particles into the air! You're such a granny killer. Grin

(Has mental image of coffin elevating vertically out of grave, with a ping and a sliding door)

herecomesthsun · 10/09/2021 12:55

Well, a little amusement in the day can be a blessing!

and you could always use the stairs, like me?

SMBH · 10/09/2021 12:57

It doesn’t have to be unbearable or harmful to follow to just come across as a bit OTT, especially when it’s something people are doing anyway (not talking in the lift, the OP has already said no one does anyway). I don’t know why the assumption is that if you have a little lighthearted eye roll at some rules, you must actually be in excruciating agony at having to follow them. I diligently follow the one-way system still in place at a local independent shop, as requested by the owner, despite the fact that it means I’m in there for longer.

herecomesthsun · 10/09/2021 13:00

Yes, I went into a local Lakeland yesterday. They still have someone at the door counting you in and out and a one way system (which I followed).

I just got the feeling they were trying to look after their customers, many of whom would be elderly in that area.

My impression was of a very kindly, caring establishment, actually, very happy shopping there.

SpeakingFranglais · 10/09/2021 13:03

I never talk in lifts anyway as everyone else listens to your conversation, nosey sods.

SMBH · 10/09/2021 13:03

Oh good :)

Yes, unless you mobility issues.

QueenofKattegat · 10/09/2021 13:36

@MurielSpriggs

It's quite irresponsible to get in a lift.
I'd say selfish.

Take the stairs then you will lose weight and not be a drain on our NHS.

Vous pouvez parlez le franglais dans le lift pour confuser les autres thinky vous?

well, look, you use the lift and I'll take the stairs then.

I'm trying to get fitter like the PP said.

And it would stop us talking in the lift,

We'd only argue Grin

Peteycat · 10/09/2021 13:56

Probably!
