Masks reducing where you are

Are the number of people wearing masks where you are gradually reducing since "freedom day"?

It's been less than 2 weeks, but already noticing more and more people going maskless. I tend to go to the same shops at roughly the same times, first time I went on 19th vast majority still wearing masks. Been a few times since then and more and more without masks. This area is fairly low infection rates and pretty high vaccination rate.

Wondering if the reduction of cases is helping those who were wavering before deciding to ditch it.

Definitely less around here.
When I first went to the supermarket I wore it but a large percentage didnt.

So stopped wearing it too. And most other shops very limited mask usage now.

@RafaIsTheKingOfClay Good to hear that people elsewhere are staying sensible.

I do live in a popular tourist destination which may be part of the reason - very likely that those reckless enough to go on holiday are also reckless enough to forgo masks.

Pootle40 · 29/07/2021 12:11

Wish I was in England so I didn't have to wear it !

MoonlightFancy · 29/07/2021 12:17

I live in quite a popular seaside town and I’ve noticed now that’s it summer holidays and the holidaymakers have arrived they tend not to be bothering with mask wearing. It’s a little bit of a worry but there’s not much we can do about it.

Paddingtonsmarmlade · 29/07/2021 12:17

Most people over 30 are wearing masks

Most men under 30 not

Most women under 30 wear them as chin hammocks

FrenchyQ · 29/07/2021 12:20

In the small town where I live, the majority are still wearing them. I ventured into the nearest city centre yesterday and I think only about 30% were still wearing them.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 29/07/2021 12:24

Not really noticed much difference to be honest. I detest wearing them but have kept on mainly because everyone else has

Dinky2004 · 29/07/2021 12:26

I've just got back from Aldi which was quite busy and I would say the majority of people in there were wearing masks.
Went into town yesterday and the same, doesn't seem to be less people wearing masks.

Longdistance · 29/07/2021 12:27

I see mainly the elderly wearing them. The younger ones, no, they’ve seemed to have ditched them. I’m just north of London.

MrsRLynde · 29/07/2021 12:30

Mask wearing seems to be on the increase here, but then Zoe has the infection rate as roughly 1:40 so you'd have to be a bit of a numpty to be around other people without one right now.

lifehappened · 29/07/2021 12:41

Feels weird people calling it "compliance" when we don't have to wear them any more

its now 'pandering' for many people
SwedishEdith · 29/07/2021 12:51

Depends where you are, I think. Hadn't noticed any reduction where I live last weekend but have been away for a few days in a mostly rural area which has always had a low incidence and it varied from shop to shop.

I'm still always surprised at people only just knowing of people who have had Covid now though.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 29/07/2021 12:57

I'm in Scotland, we still have to wear them here (indoors, public transport, shops etc).

I was in England last week and it was about 50/50 in the hotel and restaurants that I went to. Majority of hospitality staff weren't wearing them, which was interesting. Most places had little messages at the door along the lines of, 'wear one or don't, up to you, but whatever you choose don't be a dick to anyone doing the opposite'.

robinfeeder · 29/07/2021 12:58

Interesting about the age / sex split as well. What I've noticed on my observations is that yes, lots of young people (both men and women) aren't wearing them, but also women in 30s-50s age range which I found a bit more surprising.

Also where staff aren't wearing them I think customers are thinking, well why would I bother.

North london here, not many masks on at all in Sainsbury’s today, apart from staff. Only one mask in the local (large) heath. None at all on the residential streets.

HelloMissus · 29/07/2021 13:06

Last night in central London was busy. Pubs full (although not at usual rammed status as if often the case in Summer).
Restaurant was full and more tables had been added than the last time I was in there a couple of weeks ago.
Masks on tube and train were in evidence. More wearing than not I’d say.

AfternoonToffee · 29/07/2021 13:08

I'm not looking, so pretty much no idea. Still wearing mine in general, though I did take it off in-between shops in a covered shopping centre.

Not really bothered what others do or don't do.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 29/07/2021 13:10

People are still wearing them here (East London). I suppose we have to for public transport, and if you're carrying one anyway why not wear it in Tesco. I would say older people and black people are most careful about wearing them.

Darbs76 · 29/07/2021 14:20

It was my first time out last night since ‘freedom day’ as I tested positive on freedom day! But hardly anyone wearing one. As I walked past them all I felt like saying be careful, it’s really not just like a cold. Wasn’t for me anyway, still suffering the effects over 2wks on from symptoms starting

DancingQueen85 · 29/07/2021 14:20

I'm at soft play today and really surprised by how few people are wearing one

Softplay always was the best place for a general immune system upgrade. It's never going to attract the hyper-cautious Grin
frozendaisy · 29/07/2021 18:06

Went to a crowded event last night, could count the masks on one, at a push two, hands!

GreenWheat · 29/07/2021 19:58

People still wearing them in the supermarket and on public transport here. I was at Thorpe Park the other day and nobody was wearing one. It doesn't bother me either way though.

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/07/2021 20:17

Aldi and Sainsbury’s today. Staff 50/50 in both. 100% compliance in Aldi when I was in there, 3 customers not wearing out of probably 50 or so in Sainsbury’s so whatever that is (maths not my strong point though I know that should be easy!)
