Masks reducing where you are

Are the number of people wearing masks where you are gradually reducing since "freedom day"?

It's been less than 2 weeks, but already noticing more and more people going maskless. I tend to go to the same shops at roughly the same times, first time I went on 19th vast majority still wearing masks. Been a few times since then and more and more without masks. This area is fairly low infection rates and pretty high vaccination rate.

Wondering if the reduction of cases is helping those who were wavering before deciding to ditch it.

@Norugratsatall

Was in M&S yesterday - about 60/40 in favour of those wearing them. In other small cramped shops such as Paperchase, it was 100% compliance.
That's pretty much how I'm doing it and broadly what I'm seeing, large open shops and open area of mall = less masks & small enclosed shops = more masks.

People are indeed doing their own risk assessments.

gardeninggirl68 · 28/07/2021 21:26

reducing here

next heatwave will see them reduce further.....i'mno longer wearing mine in work but have put it on in a few shops i've been to. just not the one i work in

sulee · 28/07/2021 21:35

Majority still wearing masks indoors here. We went into a restaurant for lunch and several shops.

MrsSkylerWhite · 28/07/2021 21:36

Not here. Most still wearing them in indoor spaces, shops, library etc.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 28/07/2021 23:18

Still wearing them a lot here

Having said that im wearing them in those shops/restaurants that require them, im not wearing them in other places so it would really depend on where you are

I’m getting a bit pissed off with the idea that people are afraid of getting rid of masks and are relying on braver people to ditch them first….I’ll wear them where I’m asked to (whether it be by notices or verbal requests or seeing how the land lies)

TempsPerdu · 28/07/2021 23:19

Steadily reducing here since last week. Every time I go shopping I see fewer masks. There’s a really broad spectrum now, from people wearing masks even for a park walk to those not wearing them anywhere.

Personally really enjoying shopping/browsing without them, although I’ll pop one on in small shops if I’m only spending a couple of minutes inside.

gardeninggirl68 · 28/07/2021 23:57

i'm much happier not wearing mine for 9 hours a day. steady decline in the store I work in and definitely less wearing them in other stores

once you go without a mask for the first time Its such a relief its hard to go back to wearing one

Topseyt · 29/07/2021 02:54

Mixed here. Mask wearing slowly declining though, thankfully.

millerpie · 29/07/2021 03:00

Six people plus myself in our tiny village post office today and I was the only person wearing one.

Wester · 29/07/2021 05:38

Mask wearing definitely declining here. M&S next to the gym and probably only 30% of people wearing them. Definitely less than 50% in the large Asda, looked like most staff had ditched them too.

MRex · 29/07/2021 06:58

We're away. Mostly masks in the tiny supermarket, mostly masks on train and bus, very few masks in the big airy garden centre, no masks in the sparsely populated pub, only one or two masks outside. It looks like fairly sensible decisions.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 29/07/2021 07:03

Not here, or maybe marginally do, but then numbers of cases also increasing here (london borough), I'm still wearing inside shops etc. I've seen a slight increase outside, which surprised me, but maybe that's because more people commuting now, so about to go to station/catch bus?

That is me though.

I don’t enjoy wearing a mask especially around my children who are more unsettled around adults with masks. I’m not about to take it off in a supermarket when the majority of people are wearing one but if the vast majority aren’t wearing one somewhere I’ll feel brave enough not to as well. I’m not wearing mine for any other reason than to comply with the rules (TFL) or go make other people reassured.

I’m trying to guess in advance whether a place will be a mask place or not before I go in. The leisure centre is pretty much a mask free area and I haven’t worn one there since the 19th.
I put a mask on to enter a local chip shop the other day and felt honestly, a bit of a fool, as none of the staff were wearing and not one of the other customers who all came in (mostly older people) wore either.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 29/07/2021 07:42

Sorry wood

I really should have used the word ‘some’, as should ‘most’ other posters 😀

Not everyone wearing a mask is afraid to take it off 😀 not every maskless person is being ‘selfish’ (not my word but one i see a lot on here)

Its the blanket assumptions that are annoying

Notonthestairs · 29/07/2021 07:46

Had my hair cut and coloured this week - 100% mask wearers. The same in post office, pet shop, M&S and petrol station.

I was expecting a few mask free faces to be honest.

Overthebow · 29/07/2021 08:56

Declining here. I’m happy to wear one when required but am enjoying not having to wear one to pop into a shop.

loveliesbleeding1 · 29/07/2021 09:01

Definitely reducing in the small supermarket nearby, only myself and about 3 others wearing one.People were still distancing, though. Also,it wasn’t very busy.

DaniellaDavis · 29/07/2021 09:02

Doesn't bother me so I'll still wear mine. Cases are still high in the UK and I want to be protected. I've also had my 2 jabs

Bobholll · 29/07/2021 09:24

Depends where you go here. Asda, 80% not wearing them. Waitrose, 80% are wearing them 🙈 Public transport is 50/50. Softplay, 90% are not wearing them. Gymnastics free play, 100% are.

Not sure what that says about society really 😅

NannyAndJohn · 29/07/2021 10:01

Not going out but have heard that usage is plummeting over here.

Looks like the temporary drop in cases has lulled people into a false sense of security.

southeastdweller · 29/07/2021 10:14

It was about 70/30 mask wearing in shops in the early part of last week and now it’s roughly 50/50. I’ve not worn one since the 18th and it’s felt great.

gardeninggirl68 · 29/07/2021 10:44

They would have a tough job enforcing masks again! Was hard enough last time

Only about 2 in 10 customers wearing a mask in our store today

Not many in m&s wearing them either this morning. No staff wearing them

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 29/07/2021 10:49

I completely agree garden

DoormatBob · 29/07/2021 11:04

Not wearing mine except in local businesses where they are requested out of courtesy.

Would say in my experience more people still wearing them than not in the supermarket.

I am in an area that saw a huge surge during the football. The first person I actually know who got covid got it in the last week of the Euros after being in a pub. I now know 5 people who have had it and 3 of them were fully vaccinated!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 29/07/2021 11:11

I’m not convinced about that.

What I’m seeing this week is a drop in the number of people about. I’d expected it to be a bit like May half term here which was complete carnage. But even with tourists around the pubs and cafes are emptier, the buses are less full, shops are emptier. The high number of cases here seems to have caused everyone to just change their behaviour instead.

Definite age and sex split on the masks though. I don’t think it will surprise anyone to find that it’s young men that are least likely to be wearing a mask here.
