Supermarket mask wearing survey

GirlAloud · 21/07/2021 19:09

For the benefit of MN, I have conducted a highly unscientific survey of mask wearing in supermarkets over the last 72 hours. The stores surveyed, except for Waitrose, were on retail parks in & around Leicester. The results are :

Waitrose : 80-90% of people wearing masks.
M&S : 70-80% wearing masks.
Sainsbury’s : 60-70% wearing masks.
Tesco : 50-60 % wearing masks.
Aldi : around 50% wearing masks.
Asda : 20-30 % wearing masks.

Does this agree or disagree with others’ experiences?

My local Lidl was about 60% wearing masks.

MsAwesomeDragon · 21/07/2021 19:11

I've been to Morrisons, Asda and Tesco this week. In all 3 supermarkets the vast majority of people were wearing masks, at least 80%, possibly more. It's about the same numbers of people wearing masks now as there were last week. I'm in Cumbria if it matters.

AuntieJoyce · 21/07/2021 19:12

I’ve just come back from Asda and I would say 75% of people are wearing masks.

AfternoonToffee · 21/07/2021 19:12

I don't look that closely, but I can't help that this is just a thinly veiled dig at Asda shoppers. Sainsbury's yesterday seemed quite high, but I didn't pay too much attention.

TheTempest · 21/07/2021 19:13

I’ve been to Aldi and Morrison’s this week. Morrison’s was 80% ish, Aldi about the same. The only place I’ve noticed a real difference is the leisure centre bizarrely

SpringRainbow · 21/07/2021 19:14

Mask wearing in general is still incredibly high where I am. It honestly doesn’t feel any different from last week.

Whammyyammy · 21/07/2021 19:15

Yipeeeeee! Another thread about wearing masks 😷.
Its now a choice, not mandatory. Let people decide for themselves.

Let total strangers start arguing with one another about wearing or not wearing a piece of cloth commence in 3.2.1.....

SavageBeauty73 · 21/07/2021 19:16

I went to Tesco's earlier and 90% were wearing masks

user1471518104 · 21/07/2021 19:20

Why don't you just mind your own business ? Judgy fucker must have nothing better to do

gogohm · 21/07/2021 19:20

Totally unscientific survey (Bristol):
Waitrose, 95% includes all staff
Sainsbury's, 90% but they still had the dragon lady on the door giving out free masks
Aldi 75%
Lidl 70%
Asda, very few 20% tops

Greggs 100%
Costa 90%
Wetherspoons didn't see any worn

GirlAloud · 21/07/2021 19:21

Not at all.

I sometimes shop at Asda myself. I was careful not to ascribe any value judgements to any of the supermarkets, or their customers

gogohm · 21/07/2021 19:21

Ps yes I go shopping lots, some are for work, the Asda trip was unscheduled due to charger malfunction, it's open 24/7

Orf1abc · 21/07/2021 19:22

My anecdotal experience is that people have realised the government has left us to it, and are continuing to be responsible. Also in shops people are socially distancing more if anything, not less.

Unless posters are going to start disputing the estimating abilities each other I don't see why observations will result in an arguement

Wherever I've been this week mask wearing has been at the same level as previous weeks

Northernmum100 · 21/07/2021 19:24

Husband who has been out today said...
ALDi- one shopper wearing a mask, no staff wearing masks. He said it was quite busy too so a tiny percentage of shoppers
LIDL- slightly more wearing masks
Marks and Spencer- vast majority wearing masks, both staff and customers. He attributes this to the older age profile....

TooWicked · 21/07/2021 19:25

I went to Tesco earlier, not a single one of the staff was wearing a mask, about 70% of customers were. I won’t be bothering to wear one when I shop there in future.

LavendulaAngustifolia · 21/07/2021 19:26

You've been in all of these shops since Monday?

Chunkymenrock · 21/07/2021 19:28

I think you need to get a job. What a waste of time and petrol. What a weird post OP!

I'm pretty sure she doesn't mean she went out and visited supermarkets for the purpose of a mask survey Grin

I have a job and have managed to combine it with noticing my surroundings when out shopping not in work hours, go me Grin

Kakey1294129 · 21/07/2021 19:38

I think it depends on the area more than the shop. Perhaps the shop has an influence but where I live covid is increasing rapidly so people want to keep themselves and others safe. So I would say the vast majority of people are still wearing them regardless of what shop it is - j haven't been in many shops tbf though. I did go into Poundland yesterday. I would say 90 percent of people were wearing them there.

I'm the other side of Leicester, Aldi, don't see anyone in face masks, co-op about 10% in mask, Asda and Sainsbury's about 85% each wearing masks. Didn't go into tesco
ShanghaiDiva · 21/07/2021 19:40

I volunteer in a charity shop and there are very few changes: almost every customer wearing a mask.
Marks and Spencer: very few people without a mask. All staff wearing masks.

Ninkanink · 21/07/2021 19:41

Morrison’s:

Yesterday: 90/10

Today: 80/20

That’s the only supermarket I’ve been to. I’ll be going to Aldi on Monday evening next week so I’ll have a look around then.

(I’m in the non-wearing camp)

FromTheAshes · 21/07/2021 19:46

My local morrisons was about 50-60% mask wearers today, but very little SD, especially in the queues. The one way system has been removed and people are treating it like a mad free for all.

Lidl is much better, about 80% mask wearing, and SD generally maintained.

teenagetantrums · 21/07/2021 19:54

My DP works in Lidl..all the staff have stopped wearing them.. apparently yesterday about 80% of most customers were still wearing them.
