Supermarket mask wearing survey

GirlAloud · 21/07/2021 19:09

For the benefit of MN, I have conducted a highly unscientific survey of mask wearing in supermarkets over the last 72 hours. The stores surveyed, except for Waitrose, were on retail parks in & around Leicester. The results are :

Waitrose : 80-90% of people wearing masks.
M&S : 70-80% wearing masks.
Sainsbury’s : 60-70% wearing masks.
Tesco : 50-60 % wearing masks.
Aldi : around 50% wearing masks.
Asda : 20-30 % wearing masks.

Does this agree or disagree with others’ experiences?

Just got back from Tesco I would say about 60% wearing masks.

It was mainly older people that were maskless.

A few staff wearing them.

mum2jakie · 21/07/2021 19:56

Morrison's 90% with masks
Sainsbury's 70% I'd say

OliveTree75 · 21/07/2021 19:56

Did you go to these shops for actual shopping or just wander around doing mask surveillance? Is it just me that finds this odd?

HereWeGoAgain24 · 21/07/2021 20:00

I'd say 75-80% of people in asda are wearing masks.

Sparklingbrook · 21/07/2021 20:01

@Whammyyammy

Yipeeeeee! Another thread about wearing masks 😷. Its now a choice, not mandatory. Let people decide for themselves.

Let total strangers start arguing with one another about wearing or not wearing a piece of cloth commence in 3.2.1.....

Brownie points awarded for mention of

'Face nappies'
'Muzzles'
'virtue signalling piece of cloth'
etc...

From what I have seen, (and I haven't been out doing surveys outside supermarkets with a clipboard) mask wearing v popular around here.

southeastdweller · 21/07/2021 20:02

It’s roughly 50/50 in the branches of M&S, Tesco and Sainsbury’s I visited today.

WaitingforDolly · 21/07/2021 20:03

There's a Waitrose in Leicester?

nc8765 · 21/07/2021 20:04

M&S central London: 95% mask compliance (I was one of the very few who went without!)

hanahsaunt · 21/07/2021 20:04

Marks and Spencer: 100% of everyone I saw

Waitrose: maybe 75% at most of those I saw (given the number of Daily Telegraph readers that seem to be there, this wasn't a surprise)

I loathe masks but am continuing to wear.

The stores surveyed, except for Waitrose, were on retail parks in & around Leicester

it seems Waitrose was elsewhere? Confused

Peeceandquite · 21/07/2021 20:07

Not been to supermarket but I'd say around 80% of people on my bus to work are still wearing them

WaitingforDolly · 21/07/2021 20:08

Ah, poor reading skills as I was over-excited! Grin

itsgettingwierd · 21/07/2021 20:12

Aldi 99%

Asda 90-95%

Chip shop 100%

Co op 90-95%

Town shopping centre 95-98%

We've always had lower than average cases and much higher compliance of restrictions here than I've seen further afield and around my region.

Couldn't say that's a correlation or not though!

CaptainMyCaptain · 21/07/2021 20:12

Sainsburys Chesterfield - almost 100% I saw 2 people not wearing a mask.

GirlAloud · 21/07/2021 20:16

The Waitrose I ‘surveyed’ is in Mountsorrell, between Leicester & Loughborough. It’s small & unexciting. The ‘proper’ Waitrose in Oadby is now Lidl. ☹️

WaitingforDolly · 21/07/2021 20:26

Yeah it's a bit sad it was in Evington for years and then moved to Oadby and closed. The Blaby one's gone too, though that was small.

AlexaShutUp · 21/07/2021 20:29

OP, please don't tell me that you drove to the Mountsorrel Waitrose from Leicester purely to conduct your survey?Grin

zaffa · 21/07/2021 20:47

Small market town in Hampshire, co op and Asda I would say about 90% - people even still wearing face shields and mostly non wearers had lanyards. School kids made up majority of non wearers in co op and middle aged men in Asda.
Lots of SD but I did go during the day so quieter overall

Sadless · 21/07/2021 20:49

I went to my local tesco on Monday and about 90% had them on. Today I went to another tesco about 10 minutes drive from me and about 20% had them. Suppose it different people with different idea. My 13 year old son who's nearly diagnosed asd. Was talking near this women who wasn't wearing a mask and he said take it she wants to die then at her age. The look on her face was shocking but he doesnt hold back and doesn't realise that maybe he shouldn't say certain things to people.

Not even I’m that sad, honest! Grin

I was passing & dropped in.

Is this serious? I went in marks yesterday and two women had mask, visor, gloves and their own baskets. They looked at me like a leper because I had no mask on but each to their own. It was nice me and another lady exchanged a smile though in the cafe.

Oatsamazing · 21/07/2021 21:07

I didn't see anyone in my Aldi without a mask

There's one in Mountsorrel
polkadotpixie · 21/07/2021 21:30

I went into Asda on Abbey Lane on my way home from work yesterday and I'd say about 60% of people were wearing masks

PrettyBlunt · 21/07/2021 21:30

Hmm, I've seen a few threads that always mention the more expensive shops with the people who mainly wear the masks..

I don't agree with this at all. Most people are wearing masks around here.
