Supermarket mask wearing survey

For the benefit of MN, I have conducted a highly unscientific survey of mask wearing in supermarkets over the last 72 hours. The stores surveyed, except for Waitrose, were on retail parks in & around Leicester. The results are :

Waitrose : 80-90% of people wearing masks.
M&S : 70-80% wearing masks.
Sainsbury’s : 60-70% wearing masks.
Tesco : 50-60 % wearing masks.
Aldi : around 50% wearing masks.
Asda : 20-30 % wearing masks.

Does this agree or disagree with others’ experiences?

I said this on another thread- I think it's showing more solidarity with shop workers NOT to wear a mask. I'm sure that they're only being told to continue as the bosses think that's what customers want. I also think that wearing them defies all logic. Given the soaring numbers, they haven't seemed to me to work so well this far!
We don't know how much worse case numbers would have been without masks though. Perhaps comparing cases numbers with other countries with different levels mask compliance would provide one way of seeing how effective masks have been.

I'm not a shop worker and I can imagine that wearing a mask for 8 hours at a time at work, especially if you are moving heavy items, is very difficult. However, I'm sure many shop staff would appreciate customers who can wear masks continuing to wear masks, as it will help protect them from COVID.
