Supermarket mask wearing survey

GirlAloud · 21/07/2021 19:09

For the benefit of MN, I have conducted a highly unscientific survey of mask wearing in supermarkets over the last 72 hours. The stores surveyed, except for Waitrose, were on retail parks in & around Leicester. The results are :

Waitrose : 80-90% of people wearing masks.
M&S : 70-80% wearing masks.
Sainsbury’s : 60-70% wearing masks.
Tesco : 50-60 % wearing masks.
Aldi : around 50% wearing masks.
Asda : 20-30 % wearing masks.

Does this agree or disagree with others’ experiences?

First time in shops for a year for me this week!! Mask exempt so wasn't sure what to expect! Co-op about 90% wearing, tesco about 20% wearing (surprised as according to dm it was the other way around until Monday!) Boots didn't bother as they are rigid and refuse entry and only let 2 in at a time so the queue is massive and completely blocks the pavement of our small town! Home bargains 50/50 including staff, but everyone regardless was very polite and respecting each other!

FizziWater · 21/07/2021 21:34

I have only been in two shops.
Lidl 20% wearing masks. None of the staff.
Coop 10% wearing masks (it's a tiny one so that was me and the checkout woman)
Henceforth I will head to Waitrose.

I put my mask on to go into Tesco and I thought why. I'm double jabbed, I'm not unwell today, so I took it off and walked in with my toddler well I took five paces the wrong way, circled around and then wrangled my way in. I'd actually say a mix of masks and no masks 50-50. Lots of young people not wearing them and the elderly mainly still had them on. I'd say some people probably haven't a clue it's not compulsory.

I'm also going to party at a hotel in a function room Friday and my friend I'm going with said they are wearing a mask and seemed really surprised I wasn't going to, because they can advise but they can't make you wear one.

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/07/2021 21:39

Haven’t food shopped since Sunday.
90% in B&Q if that helps.

ifonly4 · 21/07/2021 21:42

I've been to Tesco's twice, same time. I'd say 95% wearing them on Monday, more like 90% today. Obviously some people are genuinely exempt, but many not wearing masks looked to be 23-30 aged females. Staff are continuing to wear masks, I feel so sorry for them, they have to continue interacting with customers who don't give a toss about them or others .

user1471443411 · 21/07/2021 21:48

Yes I feel
sorry for the staff being told to still wear masks, I know many were really looking forward to being able to take them off.

Postdatedpandemic · 21/07/2021 21:54

Morrisons probably 90%+ same as last week.
Wetherspoons - closed due to 80% of staff testing positive

Don't go to local Tesco as 50% was as good as it ever got.

Largethighsbadeyes · 21/07/2021 21:56

Since Monday I have been in a Tesco and a Co-op. Also a barbers.
Didn't see anyone NOT wearing a mask.

Also saw many people wearing one outside the shops just walking around.

Mum2jenny · 21/07/2021 22:00

On Monday I was in tescos in Melton, near Leicester and everyone was wearing a mask.

kowari · 21/07/2021 22:01

Aldi 90% here. I was one of the 10%.

Wizzbangfizz · 21/07/2021 22:02

Prob 50/50 in garage, train and Sainsbury's where I've been the past 2 days. I wasn't wearing one - no one challenged or tutted which I was expecting.

TheWindOnTheMoon · 22/07/2021 05:35

Sainsburys yesterday around 95% shoppers wearing masks. Most of staff on tills were, two weren't, and staff in cafê weren't.

mog27 · 22/07/2021 05:49

Dear lord if ever I'm that bored please don't let me resort to visiting every supermarket to observe how many people are wearing masks. They have done nothing wrong and don't have to so why is this even a thing?

PhasedRay · 22/07/2021 06:44

I've never worn a mask to the supermarkets. You rarely actually get challenged and on the odd time that you do, you just need to say you're exempt and they back down.

In my personal experience I've usually been one of the few people in a shop without a mask. Since Monday hardly anyone is wearing them. Although that is just my experience, a handful of shops, completely anecdotal and possibly not at all representative.

Are you exempt?
CaptainMyCaptain · 22/07/2021 07:42

It sounds like you are very anti-social then.

That was to @PhasedRay obviously.
sulee · 22/07/2021 07:45

People without masks probably under estimate how many others are masks wearers and go down other aisles to avoid getting near them

Sparklingbrook · 22/07/2021 07:50

I think by wearing one it shows some solidarity toward retail staff -without them the shop wouldn't even be open. And they come into contact with hundreds of people a day.

BeyondMyWits · 22/07/2021 07:51

Online grocery shopper here. 100% of my Ocado delivery drivers wore a mask yesterday... 1...

Arrowheart · 22/07/2021 07:52

Most customers are wearing them where I live. Staff, not so much.

Sparklingbrook · 22/07/2021 07:56

I'm going out today so I'll take my clipboard and pen and report back.

I have had an email for my vets stating that all their staff will continue with mask wearing and requesting that if possible the clients do to.

Oldpeoplesprinting · 22/07/2021 07:59

Since when did mountsorrel have a Waitrose?! Last time I went there it just had a shitty Budgens. Must be the Quorn/Rothley overspill raising the tone 🤣

Wanttocry · 22/07/2021 08:00

I think my area in general has had very high mask wearing. DH went to Asda last night and said he didn’t see a single person, customer or staff, not wearing a mask.

Mamadothehump · 22/07/2021 08:02

I went to my local Aldi yesterday. It wasn't very busy but 100% of staff and shoppers were wearing masks.
