New Boris Statement: Where is this going?

550 replies

DadAManger · 12/07/2021 17:20

‘We recommend masks but only recommend them’
‘Deaths will increase and we may reach 100,000 new cases per day’
‘We must open now and if not now, when?’
‘The slower we take it, the smaller number of people will die’
‘Return to the office of you can, otherwise keep working from home’

Just before Boris spoke, there was a BBC piece claiming that 10-20% of all Covid cases (mild, without symptoms, or otherwise) will be long-Covid cases of some sort or another. Now there a million long-Covid cases.

Are we aiming for herd immunity? Anyone else think this is going to be confusing for most and lead to a default setting of ‘normal’? Where is this going?

@Lemonmelonsun GrinGrin

opalescent · 13/07/2021 18:36

@Lucyk1 exactly my thoughts. People don't seem to want to accept that this trajectory is very different to last year.

QueenStromba · 13/07/2021 18:36

The vaccines have only cut hospitalisations by about 80% so if you end up with five times as many infections (just a tad more than two doublings) then you end up with just as many hospitalisations.

Bertiebiscuit · 13/07/2021 18:37

Unsurprisingly the Tory govt led by Johnson have stopped pretending they care about the vulnerable, the sick, front line workers etc and all the others who will get long covid or die - tories only care about money - it's a dog eat dog "Lord of the Flies" ideology which is purely about the survival of the fittest - so the old, the vulnerable, the sick and those with disabilities are collateral damage to Capitalism, greed and the Chumocracy

rainbowbear10 · 13/07/2021 18:37

Some folk have been doing what they want for months now ..esp not wearing masks ( or ever wearing one ) not sanitising hands when entering shops. i hate it when i am on a bus and see someone older than 10 and tehri digusting habits .. wipe their noses with their hands or on their arms .. or cough into their hands instead of a tissue then get of the bus touching all the railings on teh way down the aisle. . Covid has taught them nothing about how this has spread. I have hardly heard anyone this year say they have had a cold or flu either but have know a few that have caught covid and also a few that have not made it through and they were under 55yrs. i'm asthmatic and and my elderly dad is in the shielding group so i and my family will be continuing to follow the rules for some time yet.

PrincessNutNuts · 13/07/2021 18:39

@Lucyk1

Don't understand the problem. Even if 30 million people in the UK got a positive covid reading.... As long as the deaths and hospital admissions remain low, then that's all that matters. That's the point in the vaccine. You can still catch the virus, you just won't suffer the same and need hospitalised. So if course its time to open up when most adults have now been given the choice to have at least their 1st dose if not 2nd.
Hospital admissions and deaths won't remain low though will they?

Why would they?

52.4% of the U.K. population is double vaccinated.

Literally time after July 19th would be better than July 19th because more people will be double jabbed.

If you were trying to teach a virus to evade the vaccines you'd give it millions of weakly protected only single jabbed people to practice on.

And millions of unvaccinated people to spread it to them.

Then remove all restrictions to give it a helping hand.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 13/07/2021 18:40

@WorraLiberty

I think we've given it our best shot and now we'll just have to learn to live with it.

Sad but true imo.

Agreed. What else can we do?
PrincessNutNuts · 13/07/2021 18:42

We haven't given it anything like our best shot and there are lots of things we can do.

Lemonmelonsun · 13/07/2021 18:52

Tiny toward to end of labour's long tenure when you would expect to be enjoying the fruits of all this spending there was an unprecedented crisis on our maternity wards, every single day the papers were filled with horror stories it was awful and I noticed it more because I was expecting myself and I wrote to my mp about the chronic lack of midwives.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 13/07/2021 19:27

now that Scotland and England have adopted different policies on mask wearing we will soon have some info one way or the other about their effectiveness, or lack of.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 13/07/2021 19:31

58% of adults /41% adults single/double jabbed in Brent (where Wembley is).

Leedsfan247 · 13/07/2021 19:47

That’s almost 50% of all deaths - check your facts

Leedsfan247 · 13/07/2021 19:50

And the Tories stripped all that spending away you need a degree and 3 years training to become a midwife you can’t just magic them up.

Leedsfan247 · 13/07/2021 19:58

Hospital admissions are already up 55% on last week and the projections are still upward.

Let’s hope you won’t need the NHS anytime soon.

Pommie69 · 13/07/2021 20:41
  1. In the Netherlands they lifted ALL restrictions, they have had a total spike followed by an apology by the PM.
  2. Boris for all his training in the Classics has obviously forgotten that delta is only the 4th letter of the Greek alphabet with at least another 20, and that just as the delta variant mutated from an earlier incarnation and is MORE infectious, the delta variant itself can and will mutate. It can mutate in ways, it can mutate to cease having any impact on human beings... but

i) more or less infectious
ii) more or less DEADLY
iii) oh and it can mutate so that all the vaccines we have had so far DO NOT provide any protection from a more infectious MORE deadly covid variant...and then all the efforts so far will have been totally squandered.

Boris is already a KILLER, we had the most warning but have the highest death toll per capita (adjusted for population size).
He should be facing charges of murder and even a charge of treason.
The 19 July 2021 "Freedom Day" is about spinning to his supporters and NOT what is in the interests of our society ie a careful gradual relaxation to see what works and what doesnt. It is grossly irresponsible and I will continue to wear masks and stay home as much as possible.

Definitely this. At least they’re being honest in one way now.

GangnamGran · 13/07/2021 21:02

@NotPersephone

There seems to be a strong correlation between long Covid and over-generous sickness terms in the public sector. I doubt it’s a coincidence.
Now that is interesting. Do you have a source for that please, I’d love to quote it!

GrinNoticed that too. He must be up to somethingGrinGrinGrin

DebHagland · 13/07/2021 21:20

Let's face it, from day one Boris has had little or no idea what he's doing......why on earth do we assume he has any idea now.

Tinydancer321 · 13/07/2021 21:22

@DebHagland exactly how can we trust him esp when scientists and school unions agree it’s a mistake 🤦🏼‍♀️

What on earth makes you think that deaths and hospital admissions will stay low? How could they when only just over half the population are fully vaccinated and the vaccines aren't 100% effective?

Backofbeyond50 · 13/07/2021 22:05

Can't believe we'll actually I can believe he is advising ECV to avoid the unvaccinated and indoor spaces.
Bit difficult for those with kids or are kids.

Fully agree with all your points, sadly. This is about pandering to the backbenchers and their Landlord pals and not about the science.

Now we have TfL saying they will still ask for masks on public transport in London and Greater London, given the risks. But admit this is not legally enforceable now.
