Aren't they?

The vaccines aren't seemingly preventing transmission.

We are opening up on the 19th.

This is being done presumably as the public appetite for further lockdowns will be nil come October/November so best to get it over with now and have heard immunity come the autumn.

They won't say it but its becoming very clear that the immunocompromised need to continue to shield til the rest of us have contracted and got over the infection.

Yup. Herd immunity by another name.

Bagelsandbrie · 06/07/2021 19:20

Yep. That’s basically it. They’re assuming those most at risk will have had both vaccines (like me) and they basically don’t give a shit about children who are clinically vulnerable as they assume they can just stay at home if necessary. That’s basically their plan.

ZednotZee · 06/07/2021 19:27

They also don't give a shit about those on immunosuppressive meds for whom the vaccine may as well have been a saline injection.

They can't win whatever they do, if they don't open up fully then everyone will moan and refuse to comply, and now, they are they are accused of letting it rip🤔
I do get it I took my son to his new high school yesterday, he has severe autism and learning disabilities, the school is for children with severe and complex learning disabilities, some of the children have profound and multiple learning disabilities, and are on oxygen and tube fed etc it must be very hard for the parents to let their children go into school
I'm just not sure what the answer is?

Randominternetbitch · 06/07/2021 19:31

Yawn. We are incredibly lucky to have vaccines that offer excellent protection for the majority of people available to us free of charge. Take up rates are also thankfully very high. Thats not what I’d call letting it rip.

Covid is not the only threat we have to face and balance as a society.

Hardbackwriter · 06/07/2021 19:34

Genuinely, what do you think should be done instead?

herecomesthsun · 06/07/2021 19:36

Vaccines do reduce transmission, but a lot of people, especially young ones, haven't had them yet.

I think the Tories want to move away from restrictive measures, for a number of reasons, and the medical officers want us to be cautious.

Chillychangchoo · 06/07/2021 19:37

Yes. Common sense has finally prevailed 🙌.

Get on with life as much as we can while limiting indoor mixing over the summer.

Don't go overseas if you can help it.

Choose to wear masks indoors if crowded, if an organisation requests it, when it would be kind to others.

has it heck
ZednotZee · 06/07/2021 19:39

Genuinely, what do you think should be done instead?

Precisely nothing.

I'd simply appreciate a modicum of candour.
Oh and a warning to those who even when vaccinated remain ECV.

MilkAndBiscuits · 06/07/2021 19:42

How long are the vulnerable expected to shield?

Non vulnerable people have no idea how hard fully shielding is

VaccineSticker · 06/07/2021 19:42

It’s Herd immunity by infection for whoever hasn’t been infected.
The relaxation of masks and social distancing is meant to facilitate the rapid infection of the population to get herd immunity to help decrease the chances of a huge spike in winter. They want it to peak now.
The relaxation of masks also comes to please the voters and keep them happy. It does nothing for the economy.

I feel so sorry for any immunocompromised adults and all children.
They have been thrown under the bus and some are happily clapping not realising what’s going on.

Hardbackwriter · 06/07/2021 19:42

So your plan is to have restricted indoor mixing... forever? I don't think it's a goer, if I'm honest.

ZednotZee · 06/07/2021 19:43

No it has to be done with by the autumn or the death rates will skyrocket come winter.

I propose a letter to shield for the ECV until we know where we are come autumn.
A further six months shielding is surely kinder than a blanket survival of the fittest approach.

I agree. It’s extremely sad and worrying for CEV children and the adults for whom the vaccine isn’t effective (many of whom I know personally due to my job).
But really. What else can we do? Ever? Hopefully treatments will be developed quickly and we are learning all the time.
Vaccines DO slow down transmission and so will hopefully having had it previously.

Oh fuck, not 'common sense'. Wake me up in 2024.
FindingMeno · 06/07/2021 19:48

Completely agree @VaccineSticker

Nanalisa60 · 06/07/2021 19:49

I’m really sorry for those who have immunocompromised adults and children, but the rest of us just have to get on with it!! COVID is going nowhere we just have to live with it , get vaccinated, probably have to have third jab in winter, but we can’t go on like this until every one is safe because we are not going to get to that position.

PrincessNutNuts · 06/07/2021 19:49

It's reminiscent of

I must level with you, level with the British public. More families -many more families - are going to lose loved ones before their time"

and

"80% will catch covid, 20% will go to hospital, and 1% will sadly die."

All over again.

Only with different percentages.

They wanted to push the peak until the summertime back on March 12 2020 too.

Back in March they said
"The most important task is to protect our elderly and most vulnerable people during the peak weeks when there is the maximum risk of exposure"

But that seems to have gone out the window now.

motogogo · 06/07/2021 19:50

Most people aren't paying any attention to the rules. Saw several thousand in close quarters hugging etc on Saturday night, not to mention the raucous singing in the pub and on the street - why shouldn't 60 people be able to sing in church or at a choir? We have brides who have already postponed twice who have already ordered everything for the 24th

sashagabadon · 06/07/2021 19:52

We do need herd immunity though. We need enough people immune to stop the virus circulating and it’s better now in the summer than in the winter when we’ll have flu to contend with too.
