News outlets starting to report on a cluster of cases of a new version of the original Delta variant. Now called the Delta Plus and listed as a variant of concern. From Sky News...

India declares new 'Delta plus' variant of concern

The country has declared that a new variant, identified locally as "Delta plus", is one of concern.

Two dozen cases have been detected in three states, including the state of Maharashtra, federal health secretary Rajesh Bhushan told a news conference.

The ministry said Delta plus showed increased transmissibility, and it has told states to up their testing efforts.

The original Delta variant was first discovered in India and has managed to spread to the UK, now making up 99% of new confirmed cases.

Interesting that it’s plus and not a new name. No more information on it yet so hopefully it won’t make its way here 😩

Bordois · 22/06/2021 21:24

@NannyAndJohn

Fuck.

I'm guessing this is the Nepal Variant - Delta with the added South African mutation that's more resistant to vaccines.

1,000,000 cases by Monday, im telling you!

😵

PurpleDaisies · 22/06/2021 21:24

Why are some of you posters so terrified of discussion of new variants?
I don’t understand it at all.

Sparklingbrook · 22/06/2021 21:25

@Arrowheart, Tanzania will definitely need it's own separate doom thread.

Who is terrified? Confused
ineedaholidaynow · 22/06/2021 21:26

If you don’t like talking about Coronavirus why be on the Coronavirus board?

Keeping track of the madness.
Bellasblankexpression · 22/06/2021 21:26

@PurpleDaisies I think we are weary not terrified

PurpleDaisies · 22/06/2021 21:27

Well @Sparklingbrook you seem to want to totally derail any discussion of new variants. I have come to the conclusion you must be scared of it to not allow those threads to carry on without your accusations of doom no trying.

SpringRainbow · 22/06/2021 21:27

“The original Delta variant was first discovered in India and has managed to spread to the UK, now making up 99% of new confirmed cases.”

Maybe I am reading this wrong, but it’s already here in the UK and makes up 99% of our new cases?

PurpleDaisies · 22/06/2021 21:27

So hide the thread then. No need to derail it and make any discussion impossible.

MarshaBradyo · 22/06/2021 21:28

Keeping track of the madness.

Some of the answers make me laugh,

but also not terrified of discussing new variants either.

Sparklingbrook · 22/06/2021 21:29

Derail? That would be by talking about something else which I'm not. Why should I be scared? I'm weary like @Bellasblankexpression says. I have come to the conclusion that people are enjoying it and like to create a bit of drama TBH.
SexTrainGlue · 22/06/2021 21:30

@Sparklingbrook

I've said this before but why does there have to be a new thread for every single piece of doom-mongering. There could be one long running thread, save clogging the topic up with it?
You could say that about just about any theme within any topic on the whole of MN. The site's never really gone in for stopping multiple similar threads

No, just bored with people making up random worst case scenarios without the merest hint of fact. Even the scientists haven’t decided how worried to be yet, if at all. Doesn’t stop the doom mongers presenting their opinions as proof of a coming Armageddon
Sparklingbrook · 22/06/2021 21:31

Yes, shame that.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 22/06/2021 21:32

Meh the powers that he can’t be that bothered about it if they can’t be arsed to name it

SexTrainGlue · 22/06/2021 21:35
@Arrowheart, Tanzania will definitely need it's own separate doom thread.
Not yet it won't, but if you want to, you can google and see the number and type of mutations. If it began to spread, it would be highly concerning.

There has been nothing published on it since April (when first identified from travel surveillance) which suggests it isn't spreading. That ought to be reassuring, but as there is an information gap over Tanzania, we can't be as sure as we might perhaps wish to be.

Arrowheart · 22/06/2021 21:35

I can't get the image of all the doom hoovers sitting around waiting for the radio or the tv to inform them that there might be a possibility of a new variant and them all then racing to their keyboards to see who can be the first to spread the word to the waiting masses.

Bonus points if they can get a graph of doom or a quote from some professor of doom to back them up too. This virus and its mutations is like a drug to them.

I also love the Ostrich People idea

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 22/06/2021 21:37

Oh for fuck's sake. Right before the next travel update is due. What a shock.

SwanShaped · 22/06/2021 21:38

@tanstaafl brilliant!

Ontopofthesunset · 22/06/2021 21:38

I'm not terrified of discussing it, but there is it seems very little to discuss. Oh, that's interesting; let's hope it's not too much more transmissible and doesn't evade the vaccine. There's nothing I can do about it anyway. I'm not going to decide not to go to the pub.

Dangermoth · 22/06/2021 21:39

I think it’s a suped up Noo Noo from the Tele Tubbies. Maybe with full PPE…
