News outlets starting to report on a cluster of cases of a new version of the original Delta variant. Now called the Delta Plus and listed as a variant of concern. From Sky News...

India declares new 'Delta plus' variant of concern

The country has declared that a new variant, identified locally as "Delta plus", is one of concern.

Two dozen cases have been detected in three states, including the state of Maharashtra, federal health secretary Rajesh Bhushan told a news conference.

The ministry said Delta plus showed increased transmissibility, and it has told states to up their testing efforts.

The original Delta variant was first discovered in India and has managed to spread to the UK, now making up 99% of new confirmed cases.

@NannyAndJohn

Fuck.

I'm guessing this is the Nepal Variant - Delta with the added South African mutation that's more resistant to vaccines.

Well aren’t you’re a glass half empty joy Hmm

Didn’t really check the thread to read the room there did you?

NannyandJohn isn't obliged to 'read the room' before posting - it is a chat board not an echo chamber

Sparklingbrook · 22/06/2021 20:53

We need to split the Coronavirus topic in two IMO. let the 'oh no we're all doomed' lot get on with enjoying it and having a good old wallow.

This is the Nepal variant which we are already aware of.

Just stop it

NannyAndJohn · 22/06/2021 21:06

This is the coronavirus board, @Undisclosedlocation. I am suggesting the potential makeup of a new Variant of the coronavirus.

Yaaaay! Something else for you to be miserable about!!! Can't wait for all your insights of doom.

Excellent suggestion. @MNHQ any chance of a pro- and anti-lockdown split?

roarfeckingroarr · 22/06/2021 21:12

Yet more fear mongering

There were bound to be new variants. Delta Plus sounds like it's not too dissimilar to Delta (which has only a small diminution of vaccine effectiveness, which might be tragic for some individuals, but as Boris said right at the start, people will die).

It'll be more worrying when Epsilon and Zeta rock up, which they're bound to do.

I think I'd rather be accused of doom-mongering, for recognising that new variants could be a serious issue, then be an ostrich who refuses to face facts.

Though mercifully the most worrying new variant (Angola/Tanzania) doesn't seem to have caught on. But of course no-one really knows what's happening in Tanzania.

MMMarmite · 22/06/2021 21:20

What the hell kinda problem do you all have with the OP reporting news?

Yes viruses mutate. Yes lockdowns have terrible effects. But we need to deal with those facts. The government needs a border policy that's not a complete farce, so we're not vulnerable to every mutation that appears. Their "efforts" to keep our the last mutation were laughable.

MarshaBradyo · 22/06/2021 21:20

‘Ostrich’ people love that term

@MercyBooth

We. Cant. Keep. Doing. This.
Doing what? Talking about variants? What’s the supposed harm in being aware of what’s happening?
Sparklingbrook · 22/06/2021 21:21

I've said this before but why does there have to be a new thread for every single piece of doom-mongering. There could be one long running thread, save clogging the topic up with it?

Arrowheart · 22/06/2021 21:22

I guarantee all the scaremongering contributors will know what is going on in Tanzania and will update in a while to tell us all about it. Oh, and it all will be bad. Very very bad.

Oh. It's like a public service announcement? Right.
