Would you accept climate change lockdowns?

Climate change is a big problem and there has been talk about how lockdown has actually had a positive impact due to lack of flights etc. and how climate change lockdowns might be a thing in the future. Would you comply?

OP posts:
TheKeatingFive · 19/06/2021 20:12

Why would it be a ‘lockdown?’

I would support some kind of personal carbon allowance.

WayOutOfMyDepth · 19/06/2021 20:13

Oh so it's smart suggestions you want?

Cut the fucking grass, that shit causes asthma. Have all bus services in a council area run under a unitary authority, with fully transferable tickets at maximum £1.20 price as in London. Crunch and grease all the palms you need to to get to this. Get them running at least 20 hours a day, frequently. Rigorously enforce their lanes. Work with community groups to devise workable cycle routes in and out of urban areas. Put these in in full, with none of them lasting five metres and then disappearing into a dual carriageway. Offer incentives to employers for electric bike and scooter hire/buyback schemes thus promoting sustainable inclusive transport solutions.

That's just a few ideas off the top of my head. Some of them might work. But what won't work is bollocking people for using what means they can to go about their daily business and not offering them a sensible, workable and convenient alternative.

@osbertthesyrianhamster no but it’s difficult to have a discussion when your contributions don’t add anything.
Fortunately I work for the government and my suggestions in my particular niche will be implemented in the next few years (I’m not taking away your car, don’t worry Grin).

TinaYouFatLard · 19/06/2021 20:16

Fuck no.

WayOutOfMyDepth · 19/06/2021 20:16

What are your suggestions then?

WayOutOfMyDepth · 19/06/2021 20:17

(please don't say park and fucking ride.)

PattyPan · 19/06/2021 20:20

@WayOutOfMyDepth I think those are great suggestions. I would take it one step further and say your transferable tickets should work across unitary authorities as well for border cases. I’ve always wondered why there wasn’t something like Oyster cards across the whole country given you can already buy a train ticket that covers multiple train companies.

'Your contributors'? You didn't even start the thread. Hmm It's not a secondary school class.

WayOutOfMyDepth · 19/06/2021 20:28

@PattyPan thanks. I thought the tickets transferring across authories might be too much of a pipe dream 🤣 but yes it should absolutely happen. People don't buy a ticket for a different bus company as some kind of special treat for themselves : the whole idea is stupid.

Local authorities really need to think about the bigger picture here. Eg our local council has (mis) spent their covid transport grant putting poles in a narrow road to create a tiny wee cycle lane that lasts about 250 metres. Most people don't even know it's a cycle lane and they wander all over it while the cyclists get pissed off. Meanwhile the buses are all re routed because they can't drive down that particular street any more.

So it doesn't benefit cyclists, pedestrians or public transport users. It's literally a load of poles stuck in the road pissing people off. I know it's a small example but it's frustrating that public money earmarked for environmental improvement is wasted in this way.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 19/06/2021 20:29

Anti-social behaviour on public transport is another issue. Edinburgh recently had to cancel some night buses due to this.

BritWifeInUSA · 19/06/2021 20:32

Absolutely not.

WayOutOfMyDepth · 19/06/2021 20:32

Yeah no conductors any more, not for a long time.

Katie517 · 19/06/2021 20:33

@JellyBabiesFan couldn’t have said it better myself!

After 1.5 years and counting of being constantly barked at and told what I can and can’t do with my own life and having ridiculous rules imposed and this collective we are all in it together crap thrown in my face (when quite clearly we are not all in it together) there is no way I will be complying with anymore lockdowns whatever the purpose. International travel was my passion and main source of enjoyment pre covid and I will be back to it as soon as the government stop twatting about with traffic light lists! Imagine how uncultured and narrow minded we will all become if we never leave our own country!!

WayOutOfMyDepth · 19/06/2021 20:35

Anti social behaviour on trains is a problem too on some routes eg to hen and stag destinations even during the day. Staff don't go through the train any more, probably because covid, and you'll get to a stop where there's a load of police waiting for the problem passengers but in the meantime us on the coach have to kind of cope with it on our own. They're all pissed and lairy and it's nasty.

HermioneWeasley · 19/06/2021 20:41

Absolutely not. It’s chilling how much some people have loved the power, and this is a prime example.

There’s no point having a human race and a healthy planet if we’re not free.

PattyPan · 19/06/2021 20:42

@WayOutOfMyDepth yes totally agree. They need to collect data on the journeys that people actually do and then figure out what the best option is when planning cycle routes and public transport routes and timetables, and then send people out to test-use them to make sure they actually make sense. My DP was recently in an accident (fortunately he’s ok now) basically because the cycle lane he was using was badly planned.

@osbertthesyrianhamster well no but I thought multilateral discussion was the purpose of a forum. I agree there needs to be additional safety measures put in place for using public transport at night. Where I live the buses are well-used by people coming home after a night out because there are cheaper fares after 6pm and the day resets at 4am so you don’t need a new ticket to come home which is a good idea. But not sure what you do about the anti-social behaviour that can cause, maybe they need to bring conductors back or have British transport police on ‘at-risk’ routes.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 19/06/2021 20:43

@flightofthecrow

I have not heard this..I doubt it woukd actually happen.
GB News were banging on about this in a near conspiracy theory slot that governments LOVE lockdown and will now introduce them at the drop of a hat for any non covid reason - eg climate change / pollution
Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/06/2021 20:43

No chance.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 19/06/2021 20:45

Yes I’d love to give up every last bit of freedom and watch India and China open 3 new airports!

WayOutOfMyDepth · 19/06/2021 20:47

@PattyPan yy so much urban planning doesn't seem to track routes ie doesn't look at where people are coming from, where they're going to and how they can best get there. Even cycle routes don't do this! And they should/could be the most flexible/responsive of all. Just follow the lines.

WayOutOfMyDepth · 19/06/2021 20:48

Glad your DP is ok btw.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 19/06/2021 21:07

The way they’re throwing up housing estates there won’t be any green space left to enjoy 🙄

Getmoveon14 · 19/06/2021 21:08

Yes and it would be a lot nicer than covid lockdowns. Say for 3 months you could only visit people whose houses you could walk or cycle to. It could create a lovely sense of community.

Chewbecca · 19/06/2021 21:08

No, no, no

newnortherner111 · 19/06/2021 21:09

I would support a personal carbon allowance, or restrictions on the number of flights you could make. Providing it applied to everyone.
