Face masks and social distancing forever anyone?

Susan Michie, Professor of Health Psychology at UCL and a leading member of SAGE, has told Channel 5 that mask-wearing and social distancing will need to stay in place “forever”, not only for Covid but also “to reduce other [diseases]” in the future.

Sadly, this fruit cake has the government's ear.
Plenty have warned this past 12 months that changes we have been seeing were the thin edge of the wedge
Dismissed and gas-lighted, sadly.

Presumably not enforceable by law though. In no way are either a realistic proposition.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 10/06/2021 13:24

God I hope not. Awful. My choice - whatever. Enforceable unlikely.

nordica · 10/06/2021 13:26

She seems to talk about hand hygiene, good ventilation and wearing face coverings in busy places where ventilation is not possible. That's not the same as having social distancing forever.

Mask-wearing has become the norm in many Asian countries especially during cold and flu season and on public transport. And in terms of hand hygiene, hopefully many people have now learnt to wash their hands if they weren't doing so before! (Apparently they weren't, given the sudden surge in soap and handwash sales last year.)

Hax · 10/06/2021 13:28

I suppose face masks have been the cultural norm in the far east for a long time. Generally worn if you have a cold and to protect others.

There has certainly been a lot fewer routine bugs / viruses in the last year, and I really don't miss sitting in an office with someone sneezing and running a temperature.

Maybe the alternative is to make it anti social to go into work or use public transport if you are ill.

Honey12346 · 10/06/2021 13:29

People aren't even distancing now, everyone I know is seeing friends and family as normal and public transport is so packed that it's not possible to distance.

Yes. But, erm, we're not the far east.
Plus in many cases, eg China, it's due to dreadful pollution.

Hell, no.

userxx · 10/06/2021 13:38

Not a chance.

GoldenOmber · 10/06/2021 13:43

Hahahaaaaaaaaa no.

I feel stuff like this gives more support to anti-vax causes than any amount of Bill Gates microchip conspiracy theories ever could. “Vaccines are wonderful!… but you don’t get your freedom back even after you get one, ever, sorry.” Yeah that’s going to really help convince the under-30s to get vaccinated, good one.

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 10/06/2021 13:47

I'm tempted to not bother with the mask anymore anyway. In supermarket the other day it was so hot I had to take it off and loads of other people didn't have them on. They probably have more germs on them anyway.

iminthegarden · 10/06/2021 13:47

Good luck with that Susan

TempsPerdu · 10/06/2021 13:48

Nope, won’t be happening as far as I’m concerned. It would be impossible to police in any meaningful way, and I don’t think permanent measures are something the vast majority of people would consent to.

Susan Michie has been one of the most terrifying thing about Covid from the outset IMO.

Dreamer2468 · 10/06/2021 13:56

If you listen to it her wording is 'forever to some extent'. Better hand hygiene and improved ventilation forever is a good idea. I don't think she is suggesting all measures such as masks are used forever.

She does specifically mention masks later on, though.

I did listen. She was quite specific when pressed. She said forever in the context of masks and social distancing. She also had a weird grin on her face!

She can F off ... I won't be end off .. I wash my hands anyway but SD and face masks no

Nice for her to sit there and say that whilst getting paid monthly but business are folding

PuffinShop · 10/06/2021 14:12

I doubt it in Europe except for a small minority of people who will choose to continue. You can see mask requirements subsidising in other countries - in Iceland we don't have to wear them in shops any more and never wore them outside. Just for haircut and buses now, and I'm confident that will go soon. Denmark just got rid of them as well I heard. I don't expect the UK to be so different, even if they take a little longer.

And interesting to see was that when they were no longer mandatory, almost everyone stopped wearing them overnight. It was 100% in the supermarket one day and literally down to 1 or 2 people the next day, from my own observations.

Susan Michie is a Communist Sociopath who is advocating an utterly miserable existence for us all. What a dreadful, dangerous person she is. The way she giggled after saying 'forever' says it all. She's absolutely revelling in this new-found power and control she has over the British public thanks to the pandemic. Anyone who takes on board what she says is a fool. I for one will NOT be wearing a facemask and socially distancing forever that's for sure. What a horrid, depressing future ahead of us is this woman gets her way.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 10/06/2021 14:21

Haha, no. I'm not wearing a face mask in future, I don't care if it's the "norm" for other countries.

november90 · 10/06/2021 14:28

Wear a mask doesn't overly bother me to be honest.. if I am having a bad skin day, tired or forgot my lipstick I am quite happy to hide under a mask 🙈 It definitely takes the pressure off getting fully dressed up!
But I hate the social distancing. I very VERY much doubt that would be encourage to be a permanent thing.

Racoonworld · 10/06/2021 14:32

I won’t be doing this. I won’t be mask wearing or social distancing once restrictions are lifted, and certainly not for other illnesses. Good luck to them if they think that’s going to happen.

And a very rich one who won't do as she tells others to do.
NeedWineNow · 10/06/2021 14:36

The woman is a bloody nutcase. I can't see how anyone can give credence to anything she says and why she's given airtime ( although I think that about a lot of people who have had their five minutes of fame throughout this). She can jog on.
