Face masks and social distancing forever anyone?

Susan Michie, Professor of Health Psychology at UCL and a leading member of SAGE, has told Channel 5 that mask-wearing and social distancing will need to stay in place “forever”, not only for Covid but also “to reduce other [diseases]” in the future.

Sadly, this fruit cake has the government's ear.
Plenty have warned this past 12 months that changes we have been seeing were the thin edge of the wedge
Dismissed and gas-lighted, sadly.

@CovidCorvid

I'm actually contemplating getting myself a sunflower lanyard now. I see more and more people with them (maskless).

Yesterday one group of 4 friends, in their 30s at the gym (members lounge where you're supposed to have a mask not working out), none of them with masks, all with lanyards. The chances of all of them being exempt are remote. I think people are pushing back.

And I feel like joining them. Especially as I've had both vaccines.

If someone had said that to me six months ago or so I'd have been telling them how irresponsible they are! I think I've reached my limit now.

You can download an exempt template for your mobile on government website. I don't even think you need a doctor's note to do this (not that I am condoning this of course Grin

@CovidCorvid Incident on the Tube

MercyBooth · 10/06/2021 16:49

Oh sorry If you read the thread there is more than one incident all involving the mask law. Its a bloody pressure cooker at the moment. And with the temperatures the Tube can reach i think this is an apt description.

Nah, fuck that.
My thoughts exactly.

I'm not sure Professor Michie really has as much power as you are according her.

She is on SAGE and Independent SAGE How the fuck does that work then.

NaughtyPrudence · 10/06/2021 17:05

I live in a country where they are still mandatory indoors and outdoors and have been since the beginning of March 2020. It's hot here too at the moment, around 35°, but honestly they don't bother me, however I recently tried a cotton one and it was horrid in the heat. Nearly everyone uses surgical ones which are much easier to breathe in and some shops and public places won't let you enter in cotton ones anyway. It honestly wouldn't bother me now if they were here forever, it feels so strange not wear one and I haven't seen anyone without one since they became mandatory and we don't seem to get mask related issues, they been widely accepted We're vaccinated too and I'm an asthma sufferer, but we don't have exemptions. Not too sure how the tourists will handle it though...

GoldenOmber · 10/06/2021 17:08

She's on SAGE - real SAGE - who are holding us hostage

SAGE don’t make the rules, though. SAGE advise the government, on the specific remit they’re given, and the government factors that into the bigger picture and then decides the rules.

After all, we don’t live in a technocratic authoritarian state where a bunch of scientists decide what ‘has to’ and ‘needs to’ happen, and the government does as they say. Although certain scientists seem somewhat disappointed by this…

Good luck with that Susan
What the fuck does that mean?

Could have fooled me!
In all seriousness, the reason BJ loves SAGE so much is that he can discard his responsibilities onto them.

This.

I remember at the beginning of this pandemic, other countries were wearing masks but we weren’t. The scientists repeatedly kept saying that they made no difference and now all of a sudden the advice has changed. The sooner this is over the bloody better. It’s not fair on our kids living such a life.

newnortherner111 · 10/06/2021 17:27

I would be in favour of keeping screens at tills, one way systems in shops, hand sanitiser for good, to reduce winter infections. Give the NHS some chance to catch up with the backlog of non-urgent treatment.

I'd also support those who can work from home having the ability to do so for at least half the working week on a permanent basis, and not have it left up to the whim of employers. Defined in certain professions, and the public sector leading by example.

It’s interesting that people are saying that no one is social distancing now . I live in an area of the country which has had very low levels all the way through except for a brief surge in January. Everyone here is still queuing to go in shops, there is still a person counting you in and out at Waitrose, can’t remember when I last saw someone without a mask in a shop and the town is still a lot quieter than it was 2 years ago . If anything people are more militant about 2metres etc . I wonder if it’s fear if the unknown, I only know of 3 people who have had Covid locally and one is my FIL who got it in hospital.

or perhaps that rates are low because people are doing a good job of distancing etc ?
bookworm14 · 10/06/2021 17:43

She is deranged and seems to view the entertainment and hospitality industries as collateral damage in her weird techno-communist utopian vision. She can fuck off.

Againstmachine · 10/06/2021 17:45

See this is what gets me listen to the government scientist's, then you get idiots like this.

How much are these people getting paid for their interviews.
