Face masks and social distancing forever anyone?

Susan Michie, Professor of Health Psychology at UCL and a leading member of SAGE, has told Channel 5 that mask-wearing and social distancing will need to stay in place “forever”, not only for Covid but also “to reduce other [diseases]” in the future.

Sadly, this fruit cake has the government's ear.
Plenty have warned this past 12 months that changes we have been seeing were the thin edge of the wedge
Dismissed and gas-lighted, sadly.

may need to get myself a sunflower lanyard!
Don't be a tit

HazeyJaneII · 10/06/2021 20:07

I'm actually contemplating getting myself a sunflower lanyard now..

It's embarrassing that people think this is ok

Suzi888 · 10/06/2021 20:07

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣no way

PicsInRed · 10/06/2021 20:18

I knew I should have invested heavily in a sunflower lanyard company.

Damn. Property and pensions, what tf was I thinking.

ilovesooty · 10/06/2021 20:33
@ilovesooty sadly we have created a political environment where the issue of masks has become very toxic. There are plenty of videos about of people being abused/assaulted for not wearing a mask (one horrible one of a woman being shouted at on the underground).
So it's not as easy to just say you're not complying.
I won't comply but I also don't want any confrontation so I will just download a government exempt template onto my phone.
Likewise, I will tell people I have had the vaccine even though I haven't.
I've no time for people who lie and hide behind exemptions they don't have.

Absolutely.

@englishmaninnewyork

I didn't watch the video but no I don't approve of unpleasant behaviour, assume there is something horrible on there.

But that doesn't mean you should wear a disability lanyard.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

Can't be helped that you think the cowardice of lying and using the facilities designed for people with genuine disabilities and vulnerabilities is amusing. You won't be the only one.

Bellbottomstovetop · 10/06/2021 21:30

@Loubellbell

She can F off ... I won't be end off .. I wash my hands anyway but SD and face masks no

Nice for her to sit there and say that whilst getting paid monthly but business are folding

Which businesses are folding as a direct result of mask wearing?

If having to wear a mask to the shop is the only long term consequence of this shit show, then I'll take that thank you very much.

Social distancing won't be here for ever. Give it six months and it will be over with.

Gosh aren't you crazeee.

megletthesecond · 10/06/2021 21:34

Face masks indoors or in winter wouldn't bother me. They seem to manage in the far east.

NannyAndJohn · 10/06/2021 22:22

@GlencoraP

There’s a woman who was in Channel 4 news last night from Cambridge University who thinks we should roll back to 12 April and that we are heading for thousands of deaths in the summer. I really hope she’s wrong and I can’t see us going back to lockdown. Most people I know are happy to stay as we are for as long as as it takes but not go backwards
That's what the modelling is saying, yes.

I don't think it's an unreasonable suggestion.

DumplingsAndStew · 10/06/2021 22:48

Deliberate goading from the OP against people with disabilities is acceptable on MN, it seems.

BogRollBOGOF · 10/06/2021 23:56

@sandyandkirsten

Also the sunflower lanyards are meant to be a symbol for hidden disabilities, not mask exemption.
This was why I resisted getting one as DS has a condition which benefits from the scheme as it was originally intended. I didn't like it being appropriated by face masks becoming such a polarised issue. He may well find the lanyard handy at some point.

I tried a mask. I tried a visor. Repeatedly. I gave up after clawing my face to bleeding point in the winter. It was yet another sensory overwhelm/ panic attack and one too far. It was the point where a weekly (and only) outing to buy food was a big psycological battle. It was a damaging state to get to. I'd tried more than enough.

As more things have opened up, including attending a formal event recently I have worn a lanyard in some venues because I don't want confrontation. I don't tend to bother in places like the supermarket at quiet times.

I loathe the things for many reasons, but the reason for not wearing them is genuine (hence my strong reaction to them) and meets the criteria of distress recognised within the law.

What I have more objection to is the patronising and minimalising "I'm exempt but wear one anyway". I'm less bothered by someone wearing a lanyard to try and avoid confrontation. The association of mask exemptions and lanyards is already out there.

@TempsPerdu

Susan Michie has been one of the most terrifying thing about Covid from the outset IMO.
Agreed.

Dreadful woman.

MothersPridePlain · 11/06/2021 00:54

@MercyBooth

That was Deepti Guadasini. Now that Devi Sridhar has rowed back on a few of her comments the media have had to look for a replacement.
Deepti is another one wired to the moon.
PickAChew · 11/06/2021 00:58

Fuck that.

MercyBooth · 11/06/2021 02:36

In December Yeah right. The winter. Course it will Hmm

Tumbleweed101 · 11/06/2021 05:37

I wouldn't really get one, just venting really, but the reality is I'm really struggling with mask wearing and need them gone sooner rather than later. If they became forever I wouldn't be able to cope very well.

megletthesecond · 11/06/2021 06:54

Over with in December Hmm. Because the British winter is well known for its low numbers of viruses isn't it.

NotBot · 11/06/2021 07:09

Lol. It’s not even happening now.. has anyone seen any SD going on? I haven’t. Life just looks normal bar face masks indoors. My DD’s attend two different nurseries, both have recently dropped the need for parents & staff to wear face masks at drop off & pick up (takes place outside) and not a single parent wears one anymore. On the day the email went out at my eldest’s, I was in the always massive queue to collect 😩 & people were still wearing them as they turned up. People muttered to them to check their emails & everyone was ripping them off in delight & nattering about how nice it was to see people’s faces.. I can’t see it sticking around ..

GlencoraP · 11/06/2021 07:32

Still lots of social distancing where I am

BonnieDundee · 11/06/2021 07:51

Yep - she’s the type of person who thinks 1984 is an instruction manual

Grin love that description. Sorry I know this.is a serious thread but that made me laugh

Oh give over trying to stir things, it's pathetic. My post was in no way intended to offend people with disabilities, and you know it.
