Who's currently cancelling their holiday to Portugal then?

@Brefugee

All you saying that you thought getting vaccinated would give you more freedoms - you have understood how vaccinations work in a population? PP just posted that 50% of adults in UK are vaccinated (assuming that's fully vaccinated?) so that isn't anywhere near enough to get freedoms back, is it?

It really is a case of waiting it out, keeping to the distancing, mask wearing and sensible precautions, and getting as many people through the vaccination programme as possible.

As for pp asking what the government could have done better? your country is an island. What do you think?

Yes 50.7% OF ADULTS have had both doses

OP, your ongoing posts are making me understand that your OP was purely goady.

2021Vision · 03/06/2021 20:59

I havent booked a holiday but am desperate to go. I didn't because I knew this shit show of government would do this.

It was ok for thousands to return from India where the Indian (Delta) variant was rampant but not to go on holiday to a relatively safe Europe.

I really feel for people whose holidays have been cancelled or they now face quarantine. The double standards are disgusting.

moynomore · 03/06/2021 21:00

Should have realised the the "then" in the title. So miserable and smug.

Tealightsandd · 03/06/2021 21:01

@RoseRedRoseBlue

This whole situation is an utter, utter farce. I don’t know how the Government have got the nerve to show their collective face.
A farce indeed.

The government is apparently adding Japan to the green list.... Just a slight issue. As a high risk country, we are barred from there....

I'd say that currently we are more of a risk to Portugal than the other way round.

diggingatrench · 03/06/2021 21:01

@Malteser71

I kind of regret getting vaccinated.

Why did I bother?

I really despair at how idiotic people seem to be!

I'm incredulous!

Oops 😂

GADDay · 03/06/2021 21:02

You can't have it all.

The UK can open up and you can start getting back to a semblance of normal.

OR

You can head off to the Costa Plenty and bring Covid back just in time for Autumn/Winter.

Vaccines were not developed for the pleasure of the general holiday maker.

Try living in Australia. We are locked up in the truest sense of the word. Tiny numbers of incoming passengers waitlisted for hotel quarantine (less than 6000 a week) and virtually impossible to leave. Melbourne has 63 cases and in hard lockdown for two weeks.

It's a holiday FFS. You take your chances in a pandemic.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 03/06/2021 21:03

Er, not an island that support itself. No point sealing the borders if there is civil insurrection due to us starving to death,

bare123 · 03/06/2021 21:04

@Needanewhat

Why people would even have booked a holiday abroad this year is beyond me

It was obvious it was going to go tits up

Everyone saying this last year aswell

When does it end :(

diggingatrench · 03/06/2021 21:04

@moynomore

Seriously, I cannot believe that some people ONLY had the vaccine in expectation of being able to go on holiday abroad and are now saying they wish they hadn't bothered. I think I must live on a different planet.

Oh come one. No one had the vaccine only to have a holiday abroad. But it was very much sold to those of us who are not vulnerable that NOT ONLY would we be protecting the NHS and grannies, but we'd also get most of our freedoms, including travel, back.

People have literally said they wanted the vaccine only so they could travel.

The situation is changing all the time.

Wasn't goady but the responses have been disproportionate in the extreme

I missed this too, a smug lover of the loss of freedom.
RoseRedRoseBlue · 03/06/2021 21:07

@MrsKeats, what do you think about 1000’s of football fans who went to Porto, not to mention the Euro tournament about to start?

Brefugee · 03/06/2021 21:08

Yes 50.7% OF ADULTS have had both doses

that's pretty good - but surely you need something like 85% (and that doesn't include children, of course, so it's really not enough)

Er, not an island that support itself. No point sealing the borders if there is civil insurrection due to us starving to death,

Bloody Norah. Nobody is suggestion letting NOTHING in. But plane loads of people from places like the US and India not to mention European countries when Covid was really rampant, could have been avoided. So stop being disingenuous and work it out.

singsingbluesilver · 03/06/2021 21:08

I was not putting words into anyone's mouth. There are two posters on this thread who said that in response to not being able to go on holiday that they wish they had not bothered to have the vaccine.

Those vaccines are the best chance the world has of getting out of this misery. They have been developed at the cost of billions of pounds. Some of the world's cleverest minds have worked at an incredible pace to get them out to us. Health workers have worked overtime, come out of retirement and have been supported by amazing volunteers to get them into our arms.

But honestly, why have they bothered if we can't go to Portugal for a fortnights holiday.......

vera99 · 03/06/2021 21:08

I've read the real reason for most of the 'banned' countries is the lack of private testing capacity that a surge in bookings and trips would generate. They would be overwhelmed as they already seem to be with much lower numbers.

Lots of countries have shut their borders to non essential travel.

Not one country in the world (with the possible exception of North Korea?) has stopped importing food and medicines and any other vital travel.

But, honestly, why should I stop? I have kept all the rules. I have been vaccinated. I have done everything that was asked of me. It feels like a step too far that I should get judged for not making up extra restrictions for myself. I am currently in Portugal enjoying a glorious half-term. I’ve been discreet about it in real life but I really don’t think I have done anything wrong and I resent being treated as if I have.
MamaMary · 03/06/2021 21:11

Travelling will be a luxury for the very few if this continues!

I rather think that's the idea.

Lots has been said about how climate change means we (the proles) will have to fly less from now on.

Tealightsandd · 03/06/2021 21:12

Right now we are the higher risk country. Which is why so many other countries are restricting UK arrivals. Including France, Germany, Japan, and America.

Of course it won't happen.

There's huge pent up demand. Business will be booming in the future - and where one company falls, there will another waiting in the wings to take its place.
