@Sirius99

GoldenOmber If you had a good job that you wanted for ages, would you make decisions that you know would get you sacked ?
Yes.

I have resigned from a job I felt I wasn't doing well enough, because I believed it was impacting the people I was serving.

I didn't have wealth or a new income stream to jump to. I lived off my savings.

But then, what I do have is the integrity to realise that a public service job it isn't all about me.

GoldenOmber · 26/05/2021 13:44

If they weren’t answerable to voters every 5 years it would make it a lot easier to make the often tough but right calls

It would also make it a lot easier for them to do whatever they hell they wanted, as per every dictator government ever.

QioiioiioQ · 26/05/2021 13:45

Cummings making a point of accepting responsibility for his own failures knowing that this makes Johnson look worse because Johnson's impulse is to double down and deny

LookItsMeAgain · 26/05/2021 13:45

@GoldenOmber - Just picking up on this point that you made a little while ago:
"We have a land border with the EU, and we rely heavily on food imports via lorry freight."

Are you talking about the channel tunnel?? You know it's just a tunnel and not an actual border with the EU right? Or are you talking about Northern Ireland and the Rep. of Ireland as it really wasn't clear which connection you were referring to in that post.

SueSaid · 26/05/2021 13:45

He's sorry about BC 🙄🙄🙄

MarshaBradyo · 26/05/2021 13:46

Of course they need to be answerable to public and a democracy but the problem was more SAGE and fear of winter peak wasn’t it?

Also assumption we wouldn’t except lockdown a smaller role I reckon

Allegedly anyway

Cailleach1 · 26/05/2021 13:46

So, it was difficult to say anything at the Cobra meetings because of unauthorised leaks.

Cummings found yes or no a very difficult question to answer when asked if he had been the source of unauthorised leaks. He gave a load of waffle and sort timeline confusion before an 'in that a sense' he was the source of leaks.

You will never make a career politician with an attitude like that

fruityorange · 26/05/2021 13:47

Yes Boris Johnson seems to think he was just elected to do Brexit and nothing else. But anyone with a modicum of intelligence knows that crisis happens all the time. This time a pandemic. But it could easily have been a war, a new series of terrorist attacks, or an economic catastrophe that affected the stock markets. Being PM means you have to deal with whatever comes your way.

So you're prepared to show contempt for us mere voters, as long as it benefits Cummings and crew.

Not a surprise.

GoldenOmber · 26/05/2021 13:48

When I said ‘land border’ I meant the one that is a land border, not the one that is not a land border. HTH.

Sirius99 · 26/05/2021 13:49

GoldenOmber
That’s why they never make the tough calls,
I’d love to see politicians only allowed for max 2 terms, make the right decisions not what they think the public want

Yes, that works great in America.
GoldenOmber · 26/05/2021 13:50

(Actually I suppose the channel tunnel is a land border technically, in that it is on land and has a border? But isn’t really what most people think of by the term, me included)

Sirius99 · 26/05/2021 13:50

PerkingFaintly
Surly it’s up to voters to see through it, why would he change when it’s work so well for him?

GoldenOmber · 26/05/2021 13:52

Ooooh, Barnard Castle time!

It was perfectly clear to me that land border means the only land border we have with Europe, ie the Irish one.

the80sweregreat · 26/05/2021 13:53

Not planning for a lockdown is unforgivable , but I will concede the point that once they did finally get into gear , the information online about the pandemic was very good. It must have been the civil servants behind a lot of that as I remember having to fill in an isolation form just before lockdown and it was all there to look at and download for work.
Not everything was terrible, but I'm guessing that was more to do with admin staff etc. they probably won't receive any praise here. It must have taken a huge effort from them to get it all out there
The rest was chronic though.

GoldenOmber · 26/05/2021 13:53

@Sirius99

GoldenOmber One of The richest and most powerful nations in the world,
As are we - but I thought you were explaining how a two-term limit would make politicians make the tough but right decisions without caring about popularity?

No, he got hired because he’s a liar and a cunt.
Cowbells · 26/05/2021 13:55

@tenredthings

He's in league with slimy Gove, it's all theatre.
Absolutely.

Why on earth are people giving this self-serving liar airtime? What makes anyone think he is telling the truth this time rather than covering his own slimy back?

With glittering hindsight he reveals:
Bozza was incompetent! Well, we were shouting that at the radio years before the pandemic began, love. Let alone during it.
People were discussing things other than the pandemic in the house during the crisis! Er, yes, other things were still occurring that needed government attention. Are we supposed to froth at this?
The government got it badly wrong! Almost every government got it badly wrong. It was an unknown quantity. Blaming after the event is fruitless. The least he could have done was stick to what restrictions were in place at the time...
