To think they should pause meeting inside

In the last person to be overly concerned about the virus but the SAGE minutes show that there is something to be concerned about.
I think the economy can't take anymore and I really feel for all the businesses who are gearing up for opening on Monday. My friends cafe hasn't opened since October last year so she missed all the Christmas trade and has no outside seating. Her customer base are mostly elderly so unlikely to come out for takeaway. It would likely bankrupt her to hold off opening any longer.

The mixing in people's houses seems the least destructive part to hold off on. I know a lot of people have been looking forward to it but prolonged contact in a small space seems to be a major factor in transmission.
I'm looking forward to seeing others for a drink in their houses but I can see how it can go wrong. Most people aren't able to go for a meal in a restaurant every night of the week. I could however go to a different friends house every day, even multiple friends houses! Then if that friend does the same, that's a lot of indoor mixing. We have small children so the likelihood of them SD'ing is unlikely. Then there's older siblings at school, working parents, nursery etc leading to an increase in transmission. I feel restaurants are quite safe in comparison.
Those who want to will mix indoors anyway but it might make some think twice or not accept as many invitations. It has no impact on the economy. Yes it will have an impact on mental health but I think we're screwed on that part anyway. Anxiety is through the roof!
I'm fully expecting people to tell me to fuck off but this is the most sensible decision that BJ could make in light of the new variant. I'm not a lockdown lover, frankly as I haven't had a lockdown due to working out of the house throughout. I just want this to be over, properly over, not just kicking the can down the road.

I hope they don’t. I haven’t seen my mum since September. She lives 300 miles away so it’s not like I can just pop round and sit in the garden. She’s had 2 jabs, we’ve both had one. I want some of my old life back now, we can’t carry in like this indefinitely. This virus will keep on mutating because that’s what they do so we just need to get on with it now. Sorry if that offends anyone, but I’m thoroughly fed up of it all.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 15/05/2021 16:45

@prettylittlestar

Our neighbors have been doing it before the rules even lifted. They really pissed me off. They are mostly good neighbours accept for that Sad
I can only wish I had neighbours who were that good. Some people don't know they were born. What's it to what they do? FFS. I wonder what will happen when the curtain twitching stops.

Just go anyway.
@Tiktokersmiracle I hope your wedding goes ahead Daffodil. It's so bloody unfair isn't it, it just feels to me now that we should never look forward to anything so it's easier to let go when it gets cancelled.
Exactly!
I can't see it happening again this year
Literally the Saturday after lockdown was meant to end on 21st June.
I stupidly didn't go for an alternative date last year, thinking by this June we would be fine. It's such an important date in our relationship too.

I just think we need to be given a choice. Those who want an existence of nothing but staying isolated, that's up to them. But my mental health, and the future of my 14 year old who is failing every class cannot continue this perpetual purgatory.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 15/05/2021 17:01

I'm planning on seeing my elderly aunt next week for the first time in almost 18 months. Her son has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer (diagnosis - and therefore pain relief, and any treatment that might buy him a few months - delayed due to lockdown and his GP's massive reluctance to see anyone in person no matter how unwell they felt and how long it had been going on).

I'm 100% planning on seeing her indoors. It's a long drive, she's too old to sit outside in the shit weather we've been having, she's had both jabs and I've had one.

We've all made massive sacrifices over the past year. I'm pretty resilient, but I'm losing the willpower to carry on obeying the rules, and so is just about everyone else I know.

Tiktokersmiracle · 15/05/2021 17:12

@Tootsey11

Considering there are people in India who are getting severely ill with this variant even with the double vaccinations, I won't be going into or spending time with anyone indoors.
Where did you hear that?

I saw quite the opposite voiced by an Indian Doctor who said that there wasn't severe illness in vaccinated people. This was during the pre-covid press conference on BBC news yesterday before 5.30pm

@Tootsey11 The Times India is reporting today that the situation is starting to improve in India. There’s been no mention of the variant being able to evade a vaccine.

Stuffin · 15/05/2021 17:56

People need people.

If anyone wants to continue to socially distance or meet outside go ahead but stop trying to dictate what others do.

Yes overall it is starting to improve, and it is rapidly improving in the areas which were hit earliest. For example Delhi, down to about 7,000 new cases per day having been close to 30,000 a few weeks ago, and hospitalisations there also falling fast. (also from The Times of India)

edition.cnn.com/2021/05/03/india/india-coronavirus-fact-check-intl-hnk-dst/index.html

This suggests that the number of fully vaccinated people falling ill with covid in India is low.

Is it me, or are some on MN enjoying ramping up the fear over this? I don't mean the OP of this thread, but there are a lot of OTT posts on this board at the moment.

I'm not denying this could be serious, but we need to wait and see how things go. This variant may have caused chaos and death in India, it does not mean the same will happen here.

 1. If this variant were to have a 40% to 50% transmission advantage nationally compared to B.1.1.7, sensitivity analyses in the modelling of the roadmap in England (SAGE 88) indicate that it is likely that progressing with Step 3 alone (with no other local, regional, or national changes to measures) would lead to a substantial resurgence of hospitalisations (similar to, or larger than, previous peaks). Progressing with both Steps 3 and 4 at the earliest dates could lead to a much larger peak. Smaller transmission advantage would lead to smaller peaks.

(SAGE)

No, it's not just you.

There is no evidence of this and you know it.

Yes to the poster who says they’ve noticed a ramping up of fear on this board. Some people are loving spreading this kind of disinformation and terrifying others.

pinkearedcow · 15/05/2021 19:37

@PrincessNutNuts as I said I am not denying for one second this could be serious and I am perfectly aware that SAGE is very concerned, but some on these boards really are putting the fear of god into people.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 15/05/2021 21:34

@pinkearedcow you are right, there is an unpleasant hardcore of people who think we should still be eating stale bread locked up in our homes and be grateful for it.

KurtWilde · 15/05/2021 21:52

I agree pink, some people seem to be relishing this.

newnortherner111 · 15/05/2021 22:26

I would pause pubs and restaurants, but not places such as museums with restricted numbers.

However, the decision has been made and Mr Johnson is desperate not to backtrack.

BlowDryRat · 15/05/2021 22:33

YABU. I've had enough. Everyone I know has had enough. Even the person who cried in March at the thought of commuting on a busy train is now breaking the rules. We can't keep locking down every time a variant pops up. It really doesn't matter how many people get it as long as our basic infrastructure can cope and deaths don't soar.

Appyalpaca · 15/05/2021 23:01

After all we have been through and all our hard work, with this new variant, I do feel they should delay Mondays opening for a few weeks and rush through first vaccinations for the 20s and 30s.

Why? Because I’d much rather go a few more weeks than have another long lockdown later. That would damage us all further.

Again and again the people in a rush make us all suffer far more and for far longer. They claim to be anti lockdown but really they seem to love them. They keep plunging us all into them. I’m sick of it.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 15/05/2021 23:21

There’s a thousand people with Covid in U.K. hospitals

That number is not going to overwhelm the NHS

Time to crack on with life

And yet you claim that the best to way avoid a lockdown is to continue having a lockdown...
Respectivehomelands · 15/05/2021 23:40

Some being a little cold when they can wear layers and make themselves warner seems the easiest way to get over feeling a little cold?

A little cold?? I was almost blue last week after a 4 hour garden meet, I needed to sit in front of a roaring fire for 2 hours before my extremities would come back to life, it's f*xxx freezing right now

Respectivehomelands · 15/05/2021 23:44

A few more weeks? Then what happens when there's another variant of concern? God's sake, businesses and individuals are at their wits end
