So angry at the Government this evening

I’m SO mad. I haven’t been on this board for months and I was feeling really optimistic about life feeling like it was returning to normal.
It is criminal that they have let this variant in. It’s literally ground hog day. Playing politics with public health to do trade deals (because of bloody Brexit) with India.
I know there is hope that the vaccines will do there jobs but we shouldn’t be in this position. This wasn’t inevitable. Arggh so cross

You keep asking questions like you want to consider a different viewpoint but then you bail out.

SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 22:41

@Thefourbells

We won’t know for another few weeks

Right, so why not exercise caution until that point?

That is literally all people are saying!!! They are not demanding another lockdown. They are just saying don't deny the situation and stick heads in sand.
Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 22:42

modelling for 10,000/day is just scaremongering.

No it isn't, it is the worst case scenario. They aren't saying "this will definitely happen, lock down immediately".

I seriously can't work out if people simply don't have reading comprehension skills anymore or if they just don't want to hear certain uncomfortable truths.

I feel the same.
Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 22:43

I honestly can't believe that such a significant contingent of the population genuinely think that hundreds of renowned scientists are just "scaremongering" for the hell of it.

Even after a year and a half of this shit!!!!!

MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2021 22:44

Sonnet you have some kind of mn Duracell no doubt

Switching to something to watch, it’s late!

Doom what did you mean by the four day thing?

If we have 10,000 people admitted to hospital per day, over a four day period in this new peak (I assume this is the peak?!) we would have more people in hospital in the U.K. than we had in mid January (approx 40,000).

I could get on board with this if:

A) there were already a lot of people in hospital
B) the admissions were rising
C) it was October/November/December
D) a large proportion of the population wasn’t vaccinated or hadn’t been previously been infected with covid

I am naturally pessimistic person, but this is truly mental.

Yet again, they aren't saying that is what is going to happen. They are modelling the worst case scenario.

Not sure what is hard to understand about that tbh.

This will catch up with us in the autumn again. Fucking useless government. Too slow!!
Make the most of your summer everyone.

Deja vu.“

No, not deja vu at all. We did not have a very effective, widely taken up vaccine programme last summer. So far, current vaccines have been very effective against all variants. Moat epidemiologists believe they will be efficacious against the Indian variant too. Even if the efficacy is reduced, it will still be good. In the meantime, brilliant people are working on adapted vaccines which will be available by autumn.

Yes we're in a better position than were this time 12months ago.

This article: www.ft.com/content/5f742765-61ac-4da6-8c6f-49119cd7d46c describes some early positive signs that the vaccine can prevent serious illness and death in a Delhi carehome.

It's been incredible to watch how fast the scientists have worked to understand this novel virus and produce these vaccines. I just hope the govt will delay some of the opening up to enable more folk to get vaccinated...

I haven't been on here for a few months. To be fair, I could say the same of you.
Coldwine75 · 14/05/2021 22:51

Just another govt fuck up isnt it

MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2021 22:51

Yep let’s both get off

I’m going

Well there's an article in the Telegraph admitting that their use of fear to control the population was "unethical" and "totalitarian" so yes I do believe they are scaremongering. I have believed that since the £4k deaths a day claim

Yet again, they aren't saying that is what is going to happen. They are modelling the worst case scenario.

Not sure what is hard to understand about that tbh.

But these models are pointless.

It’s like me modelling my drive to work with:

100mph, no seatbelt, with my eyes closed, and saying there’s 100% chance I’ll die.

Coldwine75 · 14/05/2021 22:54

Scientists would never ever scaremonger, why would anyone think that???

Doomsdayisstillcoming · 14/05/2021 22:55

Anyway, I’m going to enjoy reading this thread back in July.

Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 22:55

doomsday

That is the point of pandemic modelling, because that is what you have to base your response on.

If, in a few weeks it is proven the variant doesn't evade the vaccines, the models will be adjusted.

It seems that a lot of people would rather throw caution to the wind first and find out if the variants are a problem later, once it is too late to actually act on them without a full lockdown.

QualityRoads · 14/05/2021 22:56

Prof Whitty didn't look very happy today. That's usually a sign of worse to come....
....what's betting the North West gets locked down again. Who voted for this lot of ditherers anyway?

Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 22:57

Scientists would never ever scaremonger, why would anyone think that

Scaremongering is deliberately LYING to cause panic and fear.

Do you think multiple scientists the world over are in on this together? That they all have a secret mind control WhatsApp group discussing tactics?

Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 22:58

Anyway, I’m going to enjoy reading this thread back in July.

I hope I will too. I don't WANT the variant to evade vaccines or cause a massive third wave. Hence why I think the roadmap should be delayed a couple of weeks to prevent it.

colouringindoors · 14/05/2021 22:59

Agree. Government didn't put India on the list at the same time as Pakistan because they were neotuating a trade deal with India at the time.

The Indian variant is now in multiple counties from Lancashire, Gtr Manchester and Merseyside down to Buckinghamshire.

This Government are not fit for purpose.

Coldwine75 · 14/05/2021 22:59

yes , delay monday, delay June, if we dont we will be in full lockdown by July!

colouringindoors · 14/05/2021 23:00

The government also withheld details about extent of Indian variant in UK until AFTER local elections.

Coldwine75 · 14/05/2021 23:01

Interesting.................

awesomekillick · 14/05/2021 23:05

Well the tories won big at the elections last week so the general population seems to like what they're doing. If folks want to vote for incompetence, fuck ups will be the inevitable result.
