They made sure they waited until all 40s have been jabbed until they released this piece of news.

I’m still grateful for my jab nevertheless.
In other news, many cluster of Indian variant are scattered across the country and about to become a variant of concern, but of course they buried this news because its Election Day today. I’m fed up of this mess and this reactive nonsense. Why not be proactive and make sure our border defences were more robust. It’s like I told you so?! Who would have guessed?!

I can’t find it anywhere else - only that independent article so far. I hope it’s true.

PlanDeRaccordement · 06/05/2021 21:14

Yes, they’ve known this for quite awhile, it’s why I was surprised that U.K. had such a low age for allowing AZ vaccine compared to most other countries.

HSHorror · 06/05/2021 21:17

Gov are total bastards.
It was obvious that the risk was increasing. - as eu were saying that.
Also 40s only ones stuck with less effective vax against variants and generally while over 50s topped up and under 40s have more effective vax.
Plus we have to take second dose!

CovidHalloween · 06/05/2021 21:28

@HSHorror or that they are finding a lot of AZ vax refusal or low bookings at the centres that they had to tell under 40s, “hey come we will give you an alternative to AZ, just get vaccinated!”

Either way, they made sure that most of the over 40s have been vaccinated before releasing this bit of news. I really don’t like sneaky tactics. Seems that that’s all what they do.

em.....interesting as Germany just start to allow AZ to all age group.

Germany to allow AstraZeneca jab to be given to adults of all ages

Germany will allow AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine to be given to adults of all ages, following blood clot concerns.

The country is reversing a previous decision that restricted the jab to people who are over 60 years old, health minister Jens Spahn said today.

Mr Spahn also said Germany aimed to offer 12 to 18-year-olds a vaccine by the end of August, provided regulators give approval for the Pfizer shot for that age group.

Officials previously agreed unanimously to only give the jab to people aged 60 or older, unless they are at high risk from COVID-19 or are health workers, following a recommendation from the country's independent vaccine expert panel.

I'm 32 due mine on Saturday in a centre I know only does AZ at the moment. Does this mean I will be offered something else or has the policy not taken affect yet? May wait if its literally just about to change!

AppleJane · 06/05/2021 21:42

@littlepeas

I don't think they are allowed to officially make statements on Election Day. Should be announced tomorrow.

Tealightsandd · 06/05/2021 21:44

They will definitely have to include over 40s in group 1-9 for any booster shots now. The blood clot risk is the same for 40s. The government argument for giving 40s AZ is they're higher risk from Covid than under 40s (so had to take whatever is available). It's true especially from 45 but until now the official policy focused on 50+. The changed vaccine advice officially admits 40+ are increased Covid risk.

Unless, it's not about rare blood clots (afterall, they all have rare side effects). Perhaps Pfizer and Moderna are more effective against the UK, South African, and Indian strains. The reports about efficacy against these strains seem focused on Pfizer.

worriedatthemoment · 06/05/2021 21:46

Have you seen the update in germany today

worriedatthemoment · 06/05/2021 21:47

Are people also aware risk changes and so does advice ,

CovidHalloween · 06/05/2021 21:47

Yeah bury the news till after the elections along with the Indian variant that was of concern and now it is going to be a variant of concern that they didn’t want to talk about until Election Day is over.

interesting as Germany just start to allow AZ to all age group.

As I understood it from another article, Germany is offering people a choice so they can take AZ if they want to, or an alternative if not. That seems like the fairest system of all really, and perhaps most efficient in vaccinating as many people as quickly as possible, too.

Donitta · 06/05/2021 21:51

Bastards. I’m 37 and they jabbed me with AZ literally only three weeks ago. And they told me there was no alternative, it was AZ or no jab at all.

Tealightsandd · 06/05/2021 21:52

@worriedatthemoment

The risk from Covid to over 40s, particularly 45+, has been known for many months. It's why some countries prioritised from 40 or 45 (not 50 as we did).
User27aw · 06/05/2021 21:54

The Telegraph is reporting this as well.

spacechimp · 06/05/2021 21:54

@Tealightsandd I agree about including over 40s for boosters for all the reasons you’ve set out. If under 40s mostly get Pfizer or Moderna and any over 50s who had AZ get boosters on the autumn (probably with a different vaccine) then it’s just 40-49s, the vast majority of whom will have had AZ, left with less protection. Maybe actually anyone under 50 who has had AZ should get a booster with a different vaccine

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 06/05/2021 21:54

The problem that they were seeing in Germany was that those above 60 were refusing AZ and demanded to get Pfizer instead, which was supposed to go to those under 60.
felineflutter · 06/05/2021 21:58

@Msgiggles30

A colleague of mine who is 25 was offered the AZ and no alternative. She was told all the possible risks with taking it but no other option was possible at that centre.

bretta73 · 06/05/2021 22:00

As a fit 47 year old I have refused to sign up for a vaccine on the basis it would likely be AZ.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 06/05/2021 22:04

I'm 30 and I'll be relieved if this is true.

HJ40 · 06/05/2021 22:09

The absolute fucking bastards. This is exactly what I thought would happen and I said on other threads we were stuck in the middle 40 somethings, shafted not by correct medical decisions but by what vaccines the government happened to have bought. But I followed the data and had my AZ jab on Tuesday. I cried in the appointment because I'm so shit scared and now they've come out with this. Fucking marvellous.

RoseWineTime · 06/05/2021 22:21

Biscuit get a grip people - we are incredibly lucky to have access to all of these vaccines. So far real world studies have shown AZ to be equally effective as Pfizer.

mrsknottschicken · 06/05/2021 22:22

@HJ40 spot on about us 40-somethings being stuck in the middle. Really hope they include us in the booster group now but I bet they won’t.

How can the government admit that the covid risk is higher for us than under 40s on the one hand, but then also say that we’re not quite as risky as those 50+ who make it into group 9?
