They made sure they waited until all 40s have been jabbed until they released this piece of news.

I’m still grateful for my jab nevertheless.
In other news, many cluster of Indian variant are scattered across the country and about to become a variant of concern, but of course they buried this news because its Election Day today. I’m fed up of this mess and this reactive nonsense. Why not be proactive and make sure our border defences were more robust. It’s like I told you so?! Who would have guessed?!

I think they had already worked out a system when they changed the guidelines for the under 30s. I expect the booking system will only show you specific venues that have Pfizer or Moderna available based on your age, as some venues won't be able to administer these vaccines (due to the cold storage requirements, they just can't do that at local pharmacies etc.).

Booking hasn't officially opened to the under 40s yet so they have time to make changes to the website still.

I'm under 40, and have had one AZ vaccine, I fully intend to have my second one, but I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some info (sorry to hijack your thread) in terms of how the blood clots affect people, what symptoms to look out for, and am I at risk after my second jab, or just after my first? The information I find isn't very clear

HairyFloppins · 07/05/2021 17:22

Just been invited by text through my GP. It says I am having Pfizer and I have to go to a specific surgery. I am 39.

LemonCake79 · 07/05/2021 17:29

@TheSunIsStillShining you can Google and see the press coverage of the 30 or so moderna centres that opened when the first shipments arrived. It's not a guarantee but surely worth a go to book in at your nearest moderna centre?

DollyParton2 · 07/05/2021 17:29

Do we know if this is 40 and under or 39 as cut off?

minniemomo · 07/05/2021 17:32

Our 20 something DD's have had the AZ, (cv) still not being told they are getting a different one for the second shot. Seems odd to be pulling AZ for 39 year olds but not for 20 year olds

danni0509 · 07/05/2021 17:35

@Onceuponatime1818

People need to calm down! Read the possible side effects of all prescribed drugs or drugs you can buy over the counter there’s 1000s of side effects- yet most of us wouldn’t think twice to take them!!
My sister once had to take a medication and listed in the side affects was sudden death!
NearlyAlwaysInsane · 07/05/2021 17:39

@RoseWineTime

Biscuit get a grip people - we are incredibly lucky to have access to all of these vaccines. So far real world studies have shown AZ to be equally effective as Pfizer.
Not when it comes to variants, and no, not as equally effective either (although still very effective).

I wanted to add for the sake of clarity on the German decision, the current recommendation (AZ for 60 and over only) has not been reversed in Germany, and people are not 'getting a choice' e.g. when they book appts. What's happened is that prioritisation has been stopped for AZ - that is, anyone who wants it can book, not just the people in the priority groups currently eligible, but at their own risk. If you want Pfizer or Moderna and it's not your turn yet, you still have to wait. I think this is a sensible approach.

Cut off is under 40 I think, ie 40 year olds aren't in the group that will be offered a choice.
midnightstar66 · 07/05/2021 18:17

Worrying when you are 41 🥺

I'm only 40!

Would someone mind summarising the article? I can’t access it Confused

Lucidas · 07/05/2021 18:27

@NearlyAlwaysInsane

But there is also data to suggest that the AZ vaccine elicits a stronger T-cell response than Pfizer:

I think it’s important to reiterate that, as @Schulte said, the yellow card website is publishing cumulative data.

I’m posting this week’s update here in case someone wants to use it as comparison next week.[/quote]
I screenshotted the exact same table for Tryingtryingandtrying last night on a different thread. Thanks to those who have spelled out exactly how to interpret it in words of one syllable.

bretta73 · 07/05/2021 18:51

Everyone 40 or over unwilling to take AZ just need to be patient.....the vast majority of under 40s will demand an alternative so vaccination centres will stop bothering with AZ (and even if they don't just refuse it, demand MRNA or go home).

Almost all of the clots have been after the first dose... between four days and four weeks after the jab. Our doctors are saying things to look out for are, a headache that gets worse and doesn't respond to medication, swelling in the leg, an unexplained rash. Many clots are treatable if caught early.
Tryingtryingandtrying · 07/05/2021 18:55

@mrsfezziwig Yes you did, but as I said there were some reports that were less than clear. The misinterpretation was why I was so shocked by the data, which I expressed several times. I've also had the posts where I quoted incorrectly deleted. There's no need to be rude.

I’ve screenshotted the relevant part of the additional info sheet I was given after my second dose. It details the symptoms to look out for.
Under 40 will be offered an alternative vaccine
Tryingtryingandtrying · 07/05/2021 18:58

@beguilingeyes My understanding is that because they affect the brain they are not as easily treatable as DVTs for example. Looks like 75% are surviving. Approx.

Tryingtryingandtrying · 07/05/2021 19:00

So what's the chance of dying of covid for average 40 year old vs the chance of dying of the vaccine?

I think this will be the case. I am 40, but will book a vaccination with my 39 year old Dh and if we (or I) don't get an alternative to AZ, I will wait it out 😬
user1494055864 · 07/05/2021 19:37

@HJ40

The absolute fucking bastards. This is exactly what I thought would happen and I said on other threads we were stuck in the middle 40 somethings, shafted not by correct medical decisions but by what vaccines the government happened to have bought. But I followed the data and had my AZ jab on Tuesday. I cried in the appointment because I'm so shit scared and now they've come out with this. Fucking marvellous.
What did you expect really? The government have shafted us from the beginning. You could have just used some common sense and not had it at all. I'm nearly 48 and will not be letting anyone near me with a needle. You really didn't have to.
Suranjeep · 07/05/2021 19:43

If Brexit hadn’t have happened there wouldn’t have been the resistance in mainland Europe to the AZ Oxford vaccine and people wouldn’t be having this continued discussion or concerns over it.

That's a tiny study (less than a hundred in each arm), they only looked at over 80s and they only looked at the response to the first dose.
