Servers at pub not wearing masks - is this ok?

Catyness · 24/04/2021 13:11

I've been to 2 pubs now since they've re-opened outside. I was surprised last night that the servers/waiters weren't wearing any type of face covering. They stood around 1m away to take the order then would be right at the table when delivering the drinks.

Is this allowed? Is this safe?

I did feel uncomfortable and won't be rushing back there I'm afraid.

Ain't that the truth.
@Againstmachine Well, everyone I’ve spoken to about this have said that people moaning about this sound like people who just don’t want to wear masks.

I mean, seriously, with so much going wrong in the world it sounds incredibly entitled to moan about wearing a mask.
But... You don't have to wear a mask outdoors. It's neither the law or recommended to do so. If you want to wear one outside yourself, crack on. But don't insist that others do and berate them when they don't.

TheVampiresWife · 02/05/2021 16:59

@TheVampiresWife

Just popping back to this thread to confirm that when I went to three separate bars yesterday, two had servers who weren't wearing masks outdoors at all and one had some wearing them, some not.

As I said earlier DD isn't required to wear one at work when she's serving outside so I knew this to be the case anyway.

Covid is suppressed in almost all my local postcodes and where it isn't the infection rate is tiny (around 15 per 100,000). The current rate if infection in the UK is around 1 in 1000 people. Added to that, over 60% of people have antibodies, the majority of adults have had at least one vaccination and vaccines have been proven to cut transmission.

I'd love to know how safe people need to feel, given the absolutely miniscule chance you're likely to catch covid outdoors at the moment. And if you're vulnerable, you'll likely have had both your vaccinations anyway. If you're not vulnerable, you are more likely to die in a car accident on your way to the venue than you are of covid caught while you're there (given you've a tiny chance of catching it in the first place).

Oh, and there's the small fact that the pandemic is deemed (by those who know what they're on about) to be over in the UK.

Seriously. Some perspective is required.

@Canyouexplainhowthatis given the points I made here, I'll ask you again - how safe do you need to feel, precisely?
BonnieDundee · 02/05/2021 16:59

The Covid marshalls have apparently been here a few times to make sure servers are wearing masks

I'd absolutely love to see a legal challenge to this. More people abusing their authority to bully people into believing they've broken the law. We had drones to shame walkers, women being fined for walking with a coffee, police.threatening to search shopping to ensure shoppers had bought no non-essential items, neighbours timing people in case they were out for more than the mythical hour that was never actually a law. When will this nightmare end? Angry

Never, if people like the OP have their way.
JeanClaudeVanDammit · 02/05/2021 17:02

Couldn’t give less of a shit if they are or aren’t, to be honest. We’re sat outdoors, I really don’t think someone standing a metre away for a minute or so taking orders and bringing drinks poses much of a threat.

Oh why don't you say selfish as well as entitled, we have had to wear masks for ages and I have done. But it isn't part of regs then it isn't part of regs.

Entitled is wanting people to go above and beyond to make you feel safe.

I live in a Town where council made its own rules up in the past and that town is called rotherham.

Canyouexplainhowthatis · 02/05/2021 17:10

@TheVampiresWife Actually, it IS recommended to do so.

Canyouexplainhowthatis · 02/05/2021 17:22

It’s actually quite scary how much some people have misunderstood what has actually been said by the experts.

If you’re walking through a rural area by yourself then sure, outdoors is safer than walking through a poorly ventilated office.

If, however, you’re in a crowded urban area (pub, restaurant) where people are not able to socially distance (pub, restaurant) then it IS recommended you wear a mask.

Infact there are many countries who have made face masks compulsory in public spaces all together, I suppose they’ve all got it wrong along with the USA... Wink

TheVampiresWife · 02/05/2021 17:23
@TheVampiresWife Actually, it IS recommended to do so.
By whom?

I'll refer you again to the fact that over 60% of people have antibodies/the majority of adults are vaccinated/vaccines cut transmission/covid is suppressed in many areas/deaths are lower than they've been since last summer/the infection rate is around 1 in 1000 and ask, yet again, why you feel that people need to wear masks outdoors even though they're not required to? What else will need to happen to make you feel safe?

99victoria · 02/05/2021 17:26

I've been out for food twice this weekend. On Friday I had lunch at a lovely little place in a park - the girls serving us didn't have a mask on. Not only that but we engaged her in conversation regarding the food we had eaten so she was at our table for a few minutes.

Yesterday I went with a friend to a pub after we'd been out for a walk. We ate in a marquee sort of set-up (fortunately because it pissed down with rain for about half hour while we were eating) and the servers were wearing masks.

Neither myself or either of the friends I was with minded one way or the other. In fact, if pressed I would say I prefer them not to wear masks as I don't have brilliant hearing and I get sick of having to keep say 'sorry?' when they speak to me :)

Againstmachine · 02/05/2021 17:27

You are so off the mark there it's unbelievable, what biden and fauci say is irrelevant, each state has different laws and many have done away with them.

Canyouexplainhowthatis · 02/05/2021 17:37

@TheVampiresWife Oh right, so because YOU declare the pandemic over... it is? Hmm

Againstmachine · 02/05/2021 17:40

Same token you shouldn't expect unecessay rules to make you feel safe.

Again, recommended by whom? And even if it is recommended, it's not compulsory. So you have absolutely no right to judge people for not doing so, or to insist that they do.

Which 'other countries' are you referring to, incidentally? European countries, who have just experienced an horrific third wave? The US, who have suffered a terrible death toll? Italy had compulsory mask wearing outdoors. Their death rate is worse than ours. So what's your point, exactly?

TheVampiresWife · 02/05/2021 17:42
@TheVampiresWife Oh right, so because YOU declare the pandemic over... it is? Hmm
No, I haven't declared the pandemic over, but people who know a lot more about it (even more than you do!) have.

Canyouexplainhowthatis · 02/05/2021 17:50

@TheVampiresWife Er, okay. I could link you to articles online stating that Covid is simply the flu, too.

It has not been declared over and you should probably stop acting and speaking as if it has been. Very dangerous.

Againstmachine · 02/05/2021 17:54

The pandemic has been declared over in uk , search for yourself why does anyone need to provide articles

Sorry to disappoint you, but the WHO have also said that covid is now endemic rather than pandemic status in the UK. Perhaps you'd like to take up your concerns about how dangerous it is to say so with them?

I'd be interested to see a link to a WHO statement or one by top virologists which claims Covid is simply the flu, however, so yes, please link away.

Canyouexplainhowthatis · 02/05/2021 18:01

@TheVampiresWife Why would it disappoint me?

Please link me to the official WHO statement declaring this and I’ll happily read.

Againstmachine · 02/05/2021 18:25

Why do you need a link it was allover the news covid is no longer Pandemic in UK. Google it yourself stop asking for links like people are lieing.

@Canyouexplainhowthatis this.

I really do think that, as it stands, you're overly anxious and your perceived risk is not the same as your actual risk, not by a long way. Nobody knows how things will look in the future but in the current situation there is a vanishingly small risk of catching covid outdoors - which is why masks are not required outdoors. Please don't project your unreasonable worry into others or vilify them for not doing something you think they should do. Try to relax - this is the most hopeful and positive things have been for over a year.

Canyouexplainhowthatis · 02/05/2021 18:32

@Againstmachine I want a link because the pandemic has not been declared over. We were in a similar situation not so long ago and look where we ended up once again.

All the experts I know of are optimistic that we are heading in the right direction but absolutely none of them have stated that we are in the safe zone.
