How long after AZ vaccine before you had side effects (if you had them)?

I had the AZ vaccine about midday yesterday and so far so good - slightly sore arm and not a lot else.

I was trying to work out though when I could safely consider myself 'in the clear' and not going to get any of the various side effects that a reasonable minority seem to get (headache, chills, fever, etc) so it would be good to find out - if you get any of those things, how long was it after the actual vaccination that they appeared? 24hrs seems to be possible, but has it been longer for anyone else and did you feel perfectly ok right up until that point?

Thanks!

I'm about 28 hours past mine and am feeling a little better than I was, around 24h after the jab I had a terrible headache, chills, joint pains, and just wanted to sleep. It wasn't as bad as a long covid flare day though. I am very glad I had my jab and grateful to have been able to have it.

Fozzleyplum · 24/03/2021 20:49

Had mine at midday today. My arm did not/ does not ache at all and I was not expecting any side effects. I have the flu jab and take asthma medication which some can't tolerate owing to side effects, but I have never had any significant side effects.

So I was surprised when, between 6 and 7 hours post jab, I began to feel freezing cold and was shaking as if I had the DTs. I'm in bed now, wearing fleece all over to keep warm, with a bearable (post paracetamol) headache and feeling tired rather than ill.

For reference, I'm 53 and very fit and healthy when the asthma is controlled. My mid 50s super- fit triathlete brother felt similarly ill, but our 87 year old mother had no side effects at all.

Older people don’t have side effects as they only occur in a strong immune system.

SheenMcQueen · 24/03/2021 21:39

Had mine at 10am last Friday - fine all day but tired by 6pm. Tossed and turned/hot and cold all night with a thumping headache and sore arm.

Felt exhausted and coldy all day Saturday. Bit better by Sunday but still had the headache and sore arm and felt completely fine Monday. Headache still slightly lingering but I am a headache person so very hard to say that it's now vaccine related.

480Widdio · 24/03/2021 21:48

@Runway,elderly people can have strong immune systems! A lot is to do with how healthy the person is,diet, weight exercise etc.

I am 73 and have a strong immune system,I eat healthily, walk and swim.I am in my 70’s and had a reaction to my first vaccine. As have most of my friends who keep themselves in good shape. The ones who didn’t have a reaction are the overweight ones who never exercise or take vitamin supplements.

Useruseruserusee · 24/03/2021 21:52

I had mine Tuesday 3pm. I felt completely fine at first but woke up in the early hours of this morning feeling very nauseous. All today I have felt tired and I feel as though I have morning sickness or a hangover. Aching hips and back too. I have still been able to go to work (teacher)

It’s now been over 24 hours and I am starting to feel a bit better.

mizu · 24/03/2021 21:53

I'm booked in for Monday at 3 and am worrying as I have 3 long days of teaching after that. Wanted to book for a Friday so I'd have the weekend if needed but was only given the option of Monday! Fingers crossed I'll be ok.

MajorNeville · 24/03/2021 22:04

I had mine on Monday, sore arm but nothing else. My dad ended up on antibiotics 3 whole weeks later when he had an infection around the needle mark. He says it still itches now 8 weeks later.

Athenajm80 · 24/03/2021 22:19

I had mine at 3.40pm on Monday. The next day I felt very tired and had a headache behind my eyes. I usually feel quite tired but this was more than usual, plus I don't normally get headaches. This morning I still had lingering 'behind the eye pain' but felt way more awake. In fact, I've had my most productive day for ages! Feel fine now.

Ilovemypyjamas2021 · 24/03/2021 22:33

I had mine at 2pm last Saturday felt fine for the evening, slightly iffy but nothing much during the night (but was very thirsty) woke up at 9am on Sunday & by 1030 felt awful, aching arm, in fact ached all over, temperature, chills & awful headache & a feeling of not being very ‘with it’ so went to bed for the day under extra duvets and slept on and off. Was again thirsty all day, took paracetamol as advised and felt better by Monday morning although still a bit tired & achey. My arm is still uncomfortable (I’m 50)

Timeisavirtue · 24/03/2021 22:38

I had mine yesterday at 12.45. About half hour after I got a metallic taste in my mouth which lasted about 5 minutes if that. Fast forward to this morning I woke up with a sore arm, nothing extreme basically feels like I’ve walked into a door handle, just without the bruises. Tbh that could just be aggregated as I often sleep on my arm so probably self inflicted. No other side affects whatsoever. I didn’t sleep well as I think I was waiting for the other shoe to drop... but nothing came of it.
My uncles both had theirs on Sunday and they too only had sore arms.

Mammyloveswine · 24/03/2021 22:39

Had mine Friday...headache Sunday night but not sure if related as nothing too bad and overall have felt fine!

Timeisavirtue · 24/03/2021 22:46

I’m also battling menstrual problems so glad not to have the added side effects, although I probably wouldn’t be able to tell which are which 😂

TrinityWaves · 24/03/2021 22:47

I had mine Sat eve. I felt nauseous almost immediately after having it until Monday eve. I felt really tired / kind of spacey Monday. Weird food cravings. Arm fine, nothing else.

MusicTeacherSussex · 24/03/2021 22:51

About 7 hours after I hit the deck for to hours. Then fine. Looking forward to my second dose.

Dizzy1234 · 24/03/2021 22:56

Had mine on a Saturday evening and went down hill Sunday.
Crashing headache, nausea, flu like symptoms, lasted until the Wednesday, I thought a few side effects were worth suffering for any protection that the vaccine will provide

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 24/03/2021 23:03

Early hours of the following morning! DCat woke me up for his first breakfast and I couldn't even turn over in bed because my arm was that sore. I also had an horrendous headache but that was it. Then when he came in for his second breakfast the headache was even worse, took some panadol and also did my temp as I was freezing cold but burning up. Temperature was 38.9 went back to sleep and the headache eased by the time I woke up but still hadn't completely gone. By mid morning I felt like I'd gotten the flu. Managed about 10 mins on the settee to eat my dinner. Non of which I could taste apart from a slight hint of vinegar. Went back to bed and slept pretty much most of the day. My legs felt like someone was grabbing my muscles and pinching them as hard as they could. Even laying on the mattress was unbearable and in the end I had to double my duvet over just to make it easier for me to lay down. Temp fluctuated between 37-39 but by the following morning I felt a little better but still drained. My arm however took a good week before I was able to fully move it again

Furrybutts · 24/03/2021 23:11

Got the vaccine at 10am and by 5pm just could not stay awake.
Woke at 1am next morning freezing but with a fever and was hallucinating.

Am on day 19 today and still feeling quite unwell.
I do have an auto immune disease though.

Nonmaquillee · 24/03/2021 23:16

I felt really feverish the night I had the vaccine, and very headachey and tired the next day. Felt fine on the second day.
Really glad to have had it.

saraclara · 24/03/2021 23:31

10 hours for me. I had mine a while ago and hadn't heard of the side effects, other than the very general spiel I got from the vaccinator, same as you get when you get a flu jab, which I've never had any effects from.

I had it at noon, started feeling slightly weird at 10pm, and by 10:10 I was properly shivering and chilled. Barely slept, stayed in bed until noon, got up and lay on the sofa under a blanket, but started feeling better by mid afternoon and pretty much fine by evening. Very slightly achey after that, but barely an issue.

Ten hours seems pretty standard. Most people seem to know by bedtime that they feel rubbish.

Katie517 · 25/03/2021 06:22

People saying the reaction you get depends on your health are wrong. It’s not a case of the healthier and fitter you are the worse the reaction. My friend is 32 no health conditions , super fit and a long distance runner and eats very healthy she had no reaction to the AZ first dose. I think it’s more if you have had covid before your reaction is worse.

SpeakingFranglais · 25/03/2021 06:44

Few aches 18 hours later for two hours, that’s it.

Arm a little sore, but I expected that.

SpeakingFranglais · 25/03/2021 06:44

I’ve had Covid BTW 😉

littlerose12345 · 25/03/2021 07:07

PetuniaClark · 25/03/2021 07:08
