How long after AZ vaccine before you had side effects (if you had them)?

Notthemessiah · 24/03/2021 09:20

I had the AZ vaccine about midday yesterday and so far so good - slightly sore arm and not a lot else.

I was trying to work out though when I could safely consider myself 'in the clear' and not going to get any of the various side effects that a reasonable minority seem to get (headache, chills, fever, etc) so it would be good to find out - if you get any of those things, how long was it after the actual vaccination that they appeared? 24hrs seems to be possible, but has it been longer for anyone else and did you feel perfectly ok right up until that point?

Thanks!

After effects kicked in after 8 hours. Flu, chills and fatigue for about 24 hours. Then perfectly fine.

ohhmyown · 25/03/2021 12:40

Why is the thinking had Covid before and reaction worse? I was thinking the opposite ? If your body has never experienced Covid type illness then surely it's going to react the first time?

It's taken me five days to get over it. I was fine for the first 24 hours though, so really 4 days. I feel dandy now.

FourWordsImMuNiTy · 25/03/2021 12:44

Under the weather after 6 hours, incapacitated after 9, back to under the weather after 15, back to normal after 48.

Shit I am so nervous for mine tomorrow, I really want to cancel. DH had his last week and was fine - he had very very mild covid in November.

But I had covid badly in November and was properly ill for 10 days, ambulance called and everything. The thought of voluntarily letting myself in for 24 hrs of the same fills me with horror. I just know I'm going to be a taught bundle of anxiety waiting for side effects to start, and then it will all be psychological...

FourWordsImMuNiTy · 25/03/2021 22:28

You’re highly unlikely to be struggling for breath though Sandy. And you won’t get the fear which I imagine made your Covid experience so much worse. Pain and fever and shivering/sweating are no fun of course but even if you do get them you’ll know that it’s a temporary side effect that you’ll probably shake off in a matter of hours

Runway · 25/03/2021 22:32

@HandyBendySandy it’s not 24hrs of that. It’s 24hrs of feeling a bit shit and sitting on the sofa watching netflix. You’ll be fine!

Mrstwiddle · 25/03/2021 22:34

Vaccine at 5pm, felt fine until the next day when the headache and flu like symptoms to worse throughout the day. Gone by the following day though.

saraclara · 25/03/2021 22:39

@HandyBendySandy it's nothing like you suffered with Covid!

About 25-30% of people are feeling getting the chills and shivers, and some are a bit achey. It's a bit of a shock when you're not used to getting any reactions from a vaccine, but it's not like being properly ill. All I wanted was to be able to warm my bones, and not have to do anything much.
Once I read the leaflet and realised that these were standard side effect symptoms, I was mostly glad that it proved my body was responding to the vaccine.

makingmiracles · 25/03/2021 22:43

30 hours afterwards

WeeWillyWanky · 25/03/2021 22:45

I had mine last Friday 5 minutes before DH. We booked a Friday just incase we felt unwell and could rest over the weekend. I had a sore arm for about 10 minutes and that was as bad as it got. My DH had to spend the following day in bed with fatigue/shivers/headache etc I know he wasn't faking it as he missed all the rugby.

Thanks for the reassuring comments. I am duly distracted by the fact that I misspelled "taut"

TiddleTaddleTat · 26/03/2021 12:06

I'm mainly past mine now, had 24 hours of feeling pretty fluey then another 24 of feeling just a bit tired with headaches, then back to how I was before (still long covid)

HandyBendySandy · 26/03/2021 18:50

I had it at 3.30pm this afternoon. So far so good, it's the waiting I can't stand.

It's so stupid to feel so agitated - at worst I guess I'll feel a bit ropey for a day or so, I can cope with that. It's just reading all the horror stories, they stick in your mind...

TwittleBee · 26/03/2021 21:10

Anyone else collapse from dizziness around 7 hours afterwards? Feels like I've got Vertigo. Killer headache too along with the aches and chills.

(Had jab at 11am today)

Catlover10 · 26/03/2021 21:12

Got my jab tomorrow morning and am concerned how I’m going to look after a 9 month old baby if I’m feeling as bad as people on here have! Confused

MRex · 26/03/2021 21:16

I had nothing much for 3 or 4 days (mild ache in arm for 10 min, slightly raised lymph nodes 15 min etc), then a mild headache for 2 mornings that went each time with paracetamol and felt a bit tired. If I didn't know I'd been jabbed it could all have been put down to being a bit tired. That's been it so far, 10 days so I think probably nothing more coming. I like that the side effects seem to be felt more on first dose with Oxford AZ, it means I'm expecting an easy ride next round too.

TwittleBee · 26/03/2021 21:16

@Catlover10 hopefully you'll be okay, remember that people with bad symptoms are probably more likely to be attracted to these threads

Catlover10 · 26/03/2021 21:18

@TwittleBee thank you. Feel sorry for my son more than anything. Gonna be a long boring day of screen time on repeat I think! I will take regular paracetamol and drink fluids etc though which seem to help people a bit!

EnglishRain · 26/03/2021 21:21

I had mine at 12.30pm today and by 7pm felt rotten all of a sudden. I'm 29 and never get more than an achey arm after the flu jab (NHS worker). Headache, shoulder, neck and back ache and chills. Had a hot bath and paracetamol and now off to bed with 8 month old DD. DH is working tomorrow, I thought he was off this weekend. Hoping it goes as quick as it appeared!

Timeisavirtue · 26/03/2021 22:28

My mum (53) had hers at 11.30 this morning and so far she said she just feels really tired. Fingers crossed that’s all she gets, she has martyr syndrome so make herself worse in the process 😞

Notthemessiah · 26/03/2021 23:38

Over 72 hours now and although I felt a bit tired over the last three days, slight headache and a couple of very brief hot flushes\sweats the first two evenings, that's been it. Still occasionally twingey arm, but I'm very relieved to have got off lightly. From a poll of six friends tonight though, mine is the more common experience - only one took to their bed and then only for an evening. All early fifties.

Had it weds 4pm 24 hours later felt awful can't eat, body aches , nausea and generally shit

darkangel91 · 27/03/2021 04:04

I had my vaccine on 15th March, they told me to wait 15 minutes before driving incase I fainted etc then had a dead arm for 2 days but when I went to bed that night my body was aching all over...my husband had a bad headache for like 2 days but that's about it for us. I know the side effects will be different from person to person too

TwittleBee · 27/03/2021 04:42

Anyone else been unable to sleep due to the discomfort? Feels like my head is going to implode

HandyBendySandy · 27/03/2021 06:23

I'm about 15 hours in, I have a sore arm and backache, had a very mild and brief wave of nausea in the night, but otherwise I'm fine. I'll still be keeping an eye out for the 24 hour mark though...
