Ethylene oxide on covid swabs?

Kaylasmum49 · 24/03/2021 08:11

I had a friend send me an article about the swabs used in covid tests being coated in ethylene oxide. It says that there is a risk of certain cancers with using the swabs. I think my friend is being sucked into the conspiracy theories and she keeps trying to get me to read all these theories.

Has anyone heard anything concerning about the swabs. My dd is testing twice weekly for school.

OP posts:
bobbiester · 30/03/2021 09:35

@babbaloushka - I know, I'm beginning to think some posters are confusing the little plastic and cotton swabs for metal spikes being thrust through the ethmoid.

One poster did refer to a "swan" - I guess that could peck through your ethmoid!

Roonerspismed · 30/03/2021 09:38

I don’t know anything about ethylene oxide but if we are asking kids to stick this up their noses twice a week, is it worth a wonderful worshipped scientist you check the amount that builds up for example?

I’m someone who does try to minimise various chemicals due to horrific cancer in my family.

There is an ingredient in most nasal sprays used as a preservative that has recently been shown to damage the nasal microbiome and cilia.

I don’t think the attitude that “cancer is everywhere and so are carcinogens” is particularly helpful

Loshad · 30/03/2021 09:51

Now mRNA is experimental and will be until the precisely fixed date of 2023
This poster then has the cheek to suggest we do our own research and that they know what mRNA is.
For point of reference it is a naturally occurring ( all of us will have varying amounts of mRNA right now) polymer that transfers information from your genes to another part of the cell so it can follow the instructions. You wouldn’t have got past the zygote stage without it.
Maybe you should wait for some commercially siRNAs (they attack the mRNA and will make a great line of highly specific drug treatment)

Loshad · 30/03/2021 09:54

Rooners
I hope you also then don’t drive, or use public transport, only eat locally sourced organic food, ensure your whole family remains under BMI of 25, and don’t drink or smoke, and take a minimum of 30 mins cardio a day. All of those will minimise your cancer risk far more than avoiding pre sterilised swabs.

RedGoldAndGreene · 30/03/2021 10:22

I suggest you research what mRNA is and what it does. It will remain experimental until 2023

😂 Not a scientist but know this isn't true. It's on the GCSE syllabus (protein synthesis )

Shocking how watching a video on social media means that people are as knowledgeable as scientists with years of knowledge.

If you don't want an mRNA vaccine go for Astra Zeneca which is what most people in the UK are getting.

As a lay person I appreciate the question being asked and the replies from the experts.

People get cancers more often because we are fatter (as evidenced by the differing rates around the world) and because we live longer.

Why on earth would organic food reduce cancer risk?

Oh wait - you've bought into the "pay twice as much for your food and you can live forever" marketing.... Haha - a food and their money are soon parted eh.

Roonerspismed · 30/03/2021 10:38

Pretty much I do loshad

I’m sick sick sick of later evidence coming out against increasing aspects of modern life which are generally killing us all. Food additives, diesel fumes, various medications, pesticides, processed foods- the list is endless.

So forgive me if I don’t necessarily believe that minuscule amounts of this trace gas don’t damage someone’s nose. We don’t actually know.

Roonerspismed · 30/03/2021 10:40

schrodinger you sound unhinged. What has this got to do with Gates and chem trails?

Caution about what goes in my body - when did that become some hysterical anti-vac stance? What does a LF test got to do with chemtrails? Or does the very fact I even question what a LF does - that I dare ask a question - equate me to a member of QAnon?

Because this polarisation does the debate no good at all

Various anti-vaxxer types have introduced Bill Gates and Chemtrails to this thread about swabs. Some of these posts have been deleted

That's why people like @schrodinger are fed up!!!

bobbiester · 30/03/2021 10:45

Fed about the conspiracy posts - not them being deleted!

BuildThemSkywards · 30/03/2021 10:47

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants thanks for your comment Smile

Wow, this really escalated since page 1 (I haven't been online). I think the OP was legitimately looking for reassurance, but it's disappointing to see when people who know what they are talking about (and are far more qualified than me) offer input, it's disregarded because of something XX's friend/child/colleague has shared. It's scaremongering.

These chemicals do look dangerous from a worst case point of view. The general public will never be exposed to dangerous levels of them, it just isn't allowed - it's so heavily regulated. I work with carcinogenic chemicals in much higher concentrations every day and my risk is minimal.

Shout out to @shrodingersbiscuit, keep fighting the good fight. Wink

@notrub talk about wilful misquoting
If you read my post you can see i was replying to @Roonerspismed who was talking about avoiding using sterile swabs as she wanted to avoid chemicals
I made absolutely no claim that either organic vegetables were healthier or helped you avoid cancer Hmm

"We" actually do know, and that has been demonstrated multiple times already. You don't know, probably because you're not a scientist or an expert who has studied or researched the compound extensively.
Roonerspismed · 30/03/2021 11:04

Well leaving aside LF tests...

Actually studies on organic veg is mixed and there are surprisingly few tests into what the mix of various chemicals do in the levels we ingest.

I’m not saying organic farming is perfect - particularly outside the Uk - but I try to avoid certain non organic produce and I do believe there is evidence for some of that, yes.

Roonerspismed · 30/03/2021 11:06

No I definitely haven’t researched it - and I’m glad there are people that do.

But are there long term studies on the effects of minuscule amounts of this on the nasal microbiome for example or the nasal cilia, both which are essential for overall respiratory health

True - I did wonder why you picked out organic food though in that way. Especially since it's frequently the same anti-science pseudoscience used to promote organic as it is to disparage vaccines.

Gingernaut · 30/03/2021 12:24

It's a gas.

The gas does not remain after it's been used, as there is a de-gassing stage during the sterilisation process.

blog.tuttnauer.com/blog/eto-low-temperature-sterilization#:~:text=Ethylene%20Oxide%20(EtO)%20is%20a,used%20for%20low%20temperature%20sterilization.&text=It%20is%20most%20commonly%20used,55%C2%B0C%20are%20used.

The only real risk of cancer is to the operators of the sterilisation equipment.

The use of the terminology "conspiracy theorists " is a general put down to anyone daring to think out side the box. I couldn't care who went to which University or when. I do know that the Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation are giving substantial amounts of money to the Universities for research.
Now if you want to talk science babbaloushka, you find me the science paper proving that the SARS-cov-2 virus has been isolated and purified using Koch's Postulates. In fact , what happened to SARS cov 1? Then perhaps you would like to refer to Kary Mullis talking about his invention., the PCR test. He states quite clearly on camera that the test is not a diagnostic tool. The Appeals Court in Portugal has ruled that the PCR test is unreliable. Why would you want to put anything in a childs nasal cavity or mouth when what you purport to be looking for doesn't exist and the test being used is not a diagnostic tool? Each parent has a duty of care to ask themselves whether they wish to use something that has been sterilised with Ethylene Oxide. We are not being completely informed therefore we must do our own research. Coronavirus is the common cold and variations of such. Yes everyone has it and everyone has an immune system where antibodies can be easily detected by simple tests.

Here we go again..

"Bill Gates", "Do your own research", "Does SARS-CoV-2 even exist?".

What happened to SARS-CoV-1? It infected about 8000 people and killed about 775 in 2003. In countries including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Canada. At the time it was just known as SARS.

bobbiester · 30/03/2021 17:59

P.S. Koch was a 19th century physician who didn't even know what a virus was or what DNA/RNA is.

Chusan · 30/03/2021 18:01

Gingernaut. You state that covid19 death rates went sky high. No they did not. No one has died from the illness covid19. They have died apparently with it and only if they have underlying health problems. The average age of mortality for this disease is 82 years of age . The survival rate is 99.9% . Here are the numbers from the Office of National Statistics website. Just a few years so you can make a sensible comparison then research it yourself. ONS UK Government website. Year 1990 All Cause Mortality.....564,546. Year 2000 All Cause Mortality.....537877. Year 2010 All Cause Mortality.....491,348. Year 2020 All Cause Mortality.....561,529. Just for interest try to find the figures for influenza. You won't find them as they have been relabelled covid19. Serious research and answers you can find on Dr Sam Bailey's videos on YouTube. ABSOLUTELY NO CONSPIRACY THEORIES.

Chusan - look it's quite clear you are a bonkers COVID-denialist conspiracy theorist. If you actually belief this rubbish I feel sorry for you.
