Along with any other unnecessary travel abroad.

OP posts:

I find it terrifying that in a week we have been prohibited from protest (not a whimper) and leaving the country unless someone permits us.

Fuck all to do with covid, all to do with control. And I am not very much of a tin hat wearer, either.

mrsrobin · 23/03/2021 09:32

Will variants not carry on for years and years?
Does this mean we can't go abroad for years and years?

fromdownwest · 23/03/2021 09:33

@LemonTT

These measures were put in using some very very basic and untested modelling. The numbers have fallen well below the hard numbers that were used to introduce lockdown, yet they are being ignored in opening back up again.

We have a vaccine, the numbers are falling massively, I do not see why questioning why we are still in lockdown means I wear a tin hat.

If I have told you the following a year ago, then you would have thought I was crazy

-What I have to weat

  • Whom I can see
  • What I can buy in a super market (I live in Wales)
  • My children will go without school for a year
  • I can not see my family
  • Travelling abroad is illegal
  • I can not drive to a beach 9 miles away without being stopped and fined by the police
  • The government can draft in theory any law they like overnight without any parlimenatary discussion or review

This is the reality of where we are, no tin foil hats, just a very very concerned citixen of a 'democratic' society.

pinkearedcow · 23/03/2021 09:33

Conspiracy theorists also need to note that the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill was conceived long before the pandemic and is a completely separate (albeit worrying) issue. Its bones were set out in the Tory manifesto ("Backing the Police") and it was first outlined in the Queen's speech in 2019.

LemonTT · 23/03/2021 09:33

@tangerinelollipop

I am shocked at the number of people cheering this on. That frightens me

These reasonable measures don't frighten me. What frightened me was the Bristol violence and riots. And all of that is what will bring us closer to a left wing totalitarian regime (not a temporary suspension of holidays abroad)

Those people causing violence at this and other protests are extremists from both the left and right. They just feed themselves and their social media educated idiot followers falsehoods and bullshit.

It is beyond ironic that climate change activists want to protect their freedoms to protest. But their protest is to stop people doing things they want to do. Any changes they want would go much further in curtailing freedoms we all enjoy today. Because they don’t much like air travel or any travel along with many forms of consumerism.

jellybellybanana · 23/03/2021 09:34

Like Australia and like New Zealand, we are an island nation

Truly amazing how many people in the UK have no idea what shape their own country is. And yet seem to think they are qualified to have an opinion on things regarding it.
Dumb and dumber.

PersimmonTree · 23/03/2021 09:35

@tangerinelollipop

I really wish people would consider the long term implications of what's happening

Stop the hyperbolic scaremongering please. The 'long term implications' is that we will hopefully get the virus under control and life will return to normal.

How about stop the dismissive imperious commands to other posters and hyperbolic complicity theorising? Does it comfort you to think the government has your best interests at heart? You never wonder why they inflicted years of unnecessary austerity on us (because apparently there was no money) only to suddenly pull £££££££££££ out of nowhere and spend it on wanky software, ill planned cycle lanes, miles of fear inducing Jersey barriers and useless tracking schemes?

What makes you think they're capable of controlling an uncontrollable virus?

Have a think about their Behavioural Insights Team. If it doesn't give you the creeps, I don't know what will.

This minority government was elected by sheep, admittedly some of them angry ones, and that same govt is now happily pursuing its own agenda - to force total control of dissent, by stealth, while the sheep are distracted by the virus.

Things will not return to normal, whatever that means. Patterns of State repression that were apparent in Germany in 1933 are now manifesting here. At what point do we tell them no?

Flinstones · 23/03/2021 09:35

@Itsalonghaul

We have two choices, just two:
  1. We either carry on travelling and bring back new variants and cancel out all of the progress we have made with vaccines, and go back to square one in a lockdown and all that entails.

Or

  1. We stay at home this year for a holiday, we bank the vaccine progress and we have some kind of normality and quality of life

You CANT have both!!!!!

It is not conspiracy bloody theories or any other such bollocks. Your week burning on the beaches of Spain this year will cost you potentially your job, your kids education, your livelihood, your life possibly, your future and everything else that means anything to you.

When you think about it like that is a no brainer!

And I say that as someone that is absolutely desperate to boil my brain somewhere exotic and I have worked throughout the pandemic, and I am beyond tired.

We have to understand the consequences, and they are extremely bad if the worst case scenario happens.

Or 3 We just get on with it now and live our lives because this kind of life is rubbish. If your scared stay home & let the rest of us out.

Absolutely.

Itsalonghaul · 23/03/2021 09:36

I can't be the only that is feeling relieved that Boris was clearly preparing us for this yesterday when he was speaking about the third wave, at least it is just overseas travel, and he is not cancelling the end of the lockdown! Or pushing it back.

It is a holiday folks, thats all. Over 125,000 have died we need to really put it into perspective. Unless you want another 125,000 to add to the list, then we really need to focus on what is important.

GreenlandTheMovie · 23/03/2021 09:37

@MaxNormal

If you think that's what it's like in north Korea, you need to read up on north Korea

The poor government have to start somewhere, I don't expect them to get there overnight. But it's a start at least.

This is something Scotland really has taken the lead on.

Soon, due to the new Hate Crime legislation, your own children will be able to report you to the police for possibly intending to stir up hatred about one of the protected groups (except women of course).

GameSetMatch · 23/03/2021 09:37

If we can open up everything as normal the uk and live normally again but with no foreign travel for another year or two I’d easily that that. I’d rather no abroad holidays but can live normal without lockdowns etc.

How do people with family abroad feel? Would they like to see family but go in and out of lockdowns or would they prefer to stay in the uk but live a ‘normal’ life?

SignsofSpring · 23/03/2021 09:38

I think it's a timely reminder that our lives are not, and never have been, our own. We now live in ways unthinkable a year ago- masks on our faces, not allowed (legally) to see relatives in our own homes, not allowed to travel more than 5 miles from our house, not allowed to travel abroad. No right to a private life, no right to see your partner if you want to have sex (and they live with someone else), no right to protest (well, allowed to if the police allow you to, not if no).

I don't necessarily disagree some of this was necessary. Unprecedented times and all that. I don't agree with making it illegal to see who you choose in your own home though and I want to see all these powers rowed back asap.

Trustisamust · 23/03/2021 09:38

Brilliant news. Holidays can be taken in the UK hopefully. A holiday abroad is not essential.

notimagain · 23/03/2021 09:38

@MarshaBradyo

I really loathe “quote marks” so pointless

Yes it's a bad habit I must get out of...That grumble aside did you have any thoughts on the factual content of the post? Smile

Itsalonghaul · 23/03/2021 09:39

flinstones You are not going to live the rest of your life in purgatory, it is a holiday ffs!

You can holiday anywhere in the UK and channel isles, hardly a massive hardship when we think of what has happened.

Seriously get a grip. It is hysterical and selfish to be so angry about one summer holiday. Most of us knew this would be the case, how anyone is surprised is beyond me!

Flinstones · 23/03/2021 09:39

Wigannorthwest Well said, if we can't go abroad this year it will be horrendous & absolutely packed in this country wherever you go from a local park, shops to the beach with every man & his dog!! How will that be safer????

FinallyHere · 23/03/2021 09:41

What part of the 'stay at home' message is confusing for you?

Ah. Daily Fail reader, ok, as you were.

Trustisamust · 23/03/2021 09:41

@Flinstones Holidays are a luxury so you don't have to go on one?

Itsasin1981 · 23/03/2021 09:42

It's not just one holiday, it's been 2 years now.

Itsalonghaul · 23/03/2021 09:42

It will be the same as last summer flinstones which was beautifully organised from memory and totally fine.

You really need to calm down.
Or go and remind yourself of the scenes in your local ICU.

You are taking this entirely out of proportion.

pinkearedcow · 23/03/2021 09:43

God, some people really are losing the plot. It's understandable I suppose, we have had a long and tough year and today is a bit emotional for us all. But tin foil hattery does no-one any favours.

Dustyboots · 23/03/2021 09:43

Things will not return to normal, whatever that means. Patterns of State repression that were apparent in Germany in 1933 are now manifesting here. At what point do we tell them no?

Well judging from the media silence on this, opposition support and nation’s apathy - I guess we’ll never tell them no.

If people ever wake up - which I don’t believe they will, we’ve been well and truly hypnotised by those behavioural scientists - it will be too late.

Freedom and democracy is a thing of the past in the U.K.

jellybellybanana · 23/03/2021 09:43

Wigannorthwest Well said, if we can't go abroad this year it will be horrendous & absolutely packed in this country wherever you go from a local park, shops to the beach with every man & his dog!! How will that be safer????

Because most people will stay at home, and no new variants will be brought in from overseas Hmm

Thanks I appreciate it in this climate quote marks might tip me over the edge ;

On your point yes that is interesting about falsifying relating to sentence

But on travel isn’t it already illegal? This is from gov site

COVID-19 travel
Under current UK COVID-19 restrictions, you must stay at home (or in Wales, stay local). It is illegal to travel abroad for holidays. Check the rules in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Do not travel unless you have a legally permitted reason to do so. In England, you must complete a declaration form for international travel (except for travel to Ireland).

Has something changed? The fine or second homes or something else
