Along with any other unnecessary travel abroad.

@MaxNormal

Between that and the mandatory vaccines for carers it's all going a bit North Korea. Still, as long as we're all safe.
I think you need to read some accounts from some people who have escaped from North Korea.

Pretty gross comment.

AnnaForbes · 22/03/2021 23:13

"It's not about the holidays. I really wish people would consider the long term implications of what's happening."
This.
We should be fighting to retain unalienable rights. They weren't ours to give away.

MaxNormal · 22/03/2021 23:13

@MercyBooth I'll take a look tomorrow, thanks.

@oldegg123 you should probably read some history yourself tbf.

@MaxNormal

Good, holidays abroad aren't essential in any universe

It's not about the holidays. I really wish people would consider the long term implications of what's happening.

Totally. This reminds me of the post last week from someone who dared say they were worried a out the cruises only allowing people who'd been vaccinated on and where this was going to lead. Provoked cries of,I think it's a great idea/kids don't go on cruises anyway. Aka most people totally missed the point.

Or the numerous threads started in the last year about concerns for our human rights being eroded which were met with, We're in the middle of a pandemic,you're so selfish,oh COURSE we'll get out rights back....

And to the people saying this isn't North Korea. You're sure as shit right it ain't. Not yet anyway

EasterIssland · 22/03/2021 23:17

They’ve not been since Xmas.
On the 8th of March you had to carry a paper of why you were leaving the country and the fine was £200. Now it’s higher.
Saying this I know someone that has gone back to their country and I suspect she’s lied about the reason

I don't understand your post. What history should I read?

dividedwefall · 22/03/2021 23:21

From '3 weeks to flatten the curve' to 'Illegal to leave the country without a valid excuse' a year later.

I bet Peter Hitchens is fuuuuuming after getting his jab to go abroad.

GeorgeandHarold66 · 22/03/2021 23:23

But it's replacing a rule that you couldn't leave your house without good reason?

Now you can leave your house without good reason, but not the country?

That sounds like progress to me Hmm

Fgs1 · 22/03/2021 23:26

How were they not already illegal? Seems strange to make them illegal just when we seem to be getting through this. Why now rather than a year ago?! This Government make no sense.

Teentitansonloop · 22/03/2021 23:27

This is what they have done in Australia for a year, it's what the advisers recommend, I'd rather this than a 3rd or 4th wave.

Mrbob · 22/03/2021 23:27

Maybe if that had been implemented a year ago 100000 less people would have died. This isn’t some conspiracy to take away your freedoms it’s a way to try and stop you DYING. Jesus. It’s like the right to bear arms crowd in America.
It’s not some slippery slope. I live in a country where the borders have been closed for a year and I am so utterly grateful for that. Terrified of what could happen if my family in the UK became unwell but entirely happy to give up overseas (and interstate) holidays temporarily so we don’t get sick and our healthcare system doesn’t fall apart

Dugee · 22/03/2021 23:28

That's what I thought. Contain us in this country, get the local economy up and running but don't let us go abroad and risk bringing anything back.

oldegg123 · 22/03/2021 23:30

I've posted this before on many threads and seen lots of other people post similar and never get an actual reply.

What does the government have to gain by preventing people going on holidays abroad and keeping restrictions in place? The economy is tanked, encouraging people back to work, booking flights, out for lunches and drinks are what's needed to get things back on track. The government reluctance isn't some big conspiracy, it's because we're in the midst of pandemic which sadly won't adhere to human timescales no matter how fed up people are.

BJ has led to this shitshow with his constant overpromising and lack of leadership despite advice from experts.

oldegg123 · 22/03/2021 23:32

Yes - NZ & Australia did this approach from the start and it worked well. The problem is BJ was never able to lockdown hard enough to allow us to be in a similar situation (which tbf would have been several magnitudes harder in the UK).

Mistlewoeandwhine · 22/03/2021 23:35

I’m fine with it. Holidays in the U.K. are better for our economy.

earsup · 22/03/2021 23:35

well all too late but i cancelled dental surgery in turkey last year 3 times....its re booked for october now and i need to go....its not teeth whitening !!

MercyBooth · 22/03/2021 23:36

We have had one of the strictest lockdowns in the UK

HolmeH · 22/03/2021 23:38

They weren’t illegal before?! Shoulda had a holiday clearly 🙈

MercyBooth · 22/03/2021 23:38

EXACTLY They did it from the start. They didnt put their population through a year of crap , lying , gaslighting, goalpost moving and psychological abuse first. People in the UK have reached the end of their tether.

Okbussitout · 22/03/2021 23:40

Who the fuck is going abroad in holiday right now anyway?

Also I'm not clicking on a daily mail link.

ImAlrightThanx · 22/03/2021 23:41

We'll be able to holiday abroad soon enough.
Even if it wasn't illegal, most places wouldn't let us in anyway.
I'm far more worried about the police powers bill in regards to our basic rights then a temporary travel ban.

oldegg123 · 22/03/2021 23:43

[quote MercyBooth]We have had one of the strictest lockdowns in the UK

As always, (and especially in the case of The Times), include the actual quote from the lead scientist rather than a clickbait headline

Thomas Hale, lead researcher on the Covid tracker project, said: “In recent months UK restrictions have been more stringent than most other countries, reflecting the heightened risk the country faced from the winter surge and the new variant. For example, the UK has kept all schools closed and prevented people from leaving their local areas, while many other European countries did not. At the same time, the UK has created new international travel restrictions, something many other countries did earlier.

TownTalkJewels · 22/03/2021 23:48

To those who are OK with this- how long will you be OK with it for?

There will be variants springing up abroad for years to come, given the time it will take to vaccinate the world. That risk isn’t going away.

Are you ok with this law being in force for, say, 3 years?

Just trying to understand the limits of people’s compliance with this issue in particular.

Sugarandteaandmum · 22/03/2021 23:50

Why would anyone book a foreign holiday? My family are mostly abroad too including my dad. But he just has to stay put, as do we.

We need to vaccinate the world. The WORLD. and we don't need foreign holidays til it's done.

Popsy321 · 22/03/2021 23:50

@MaxNormal

Good, holidays abroad aren't essential in any universe

It's not about the holidays. I really wish people would consider the long term implications of what's happening.

I'm considering it and despairing but even if thousands of us look on in horror, what difference will it make? We are powerless.
