Workman in house no mask

154 replies

JC17fj74 · 22/03/2021 12:27

We have a workman in the house and he hasn't got a mask on 😕
I'm really surprised and when I said to him about it he said he ha had Covid last year and has his jab. That doesn't stop him spreading it though and now I'm really anxious staying in another room while he works.
Has anyone had anyone in there house with no mask on while doing work?
Maybe I'm being over cautious 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'd have the windows open anyway, but I wouldn't allow anyone in without a mask. Twice I've had people who "forgot" their mask (a drain guy and a gas guy), in each case no problem just gave them a disposable to use and reminded them when it slipped down. Once everyone is vaccinated (including DH, DS and my second dose) and cases are very low I'll happily drop it, but until then it's masks or leave.

HeddaGarbled · 22/03/2021 14:23

We have a bathroom fitter in the house right now, not wearing a mask. He’s upstairs, windows open in the room he’s working in. I’m downstairs. Front door has been open on and off all morning as he’s carrying stuff in and out. I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.

TheJerkStore · 22/03/2021 14:24

We've just had a new bathroom and the people fitting it didn't wear masks.

It really didn't bother me.

Greybeardy · 22/03/2021 14:27

It’s your house - ask them to wear masks or leave then. Having had covid once doesn’t mean he can’t get it again. Presumably he’s only had one jab too so isn’t fully protected, so he’s not as safe as he thinks he is.

FWIW I’ve had workmen in recently and asked them to wear masks (and I also wore one). I work in theatres & intensive care so have had plenty of exposure to patients with covid and neither of my workmen looked healthy enough to do well from it if they got it from me so it was for their own protection.

Frequentflier · 22/03/2021 14:32

@ComDummings

Also those who insist on tradesmen etc to wear a mask in the house do you wear one while they’re there? Because I am shocked by the number of people who expect people to wear a mask in their house but won’t/don’t wear one. A family member is exempt, he got to a job and the bloke demanded he wear a mask. Bloke in question was not wearing a mask and had no intention of wearing one. Weird.
Yes , I insist all tradesmen wear one and I wear one too. My choice as to whom I employ.
Mumof3girlsandaboy · 22/03/2021 14:41

I had 2 different tradesmen from different companies and they wore masks and I did

whatswithtodaytoday · 22/03/2021 14:49
@whatswithtodaytoday says that she has a tradesperson in a different room and she's there for other her mask on. Only when they go upstairs does she take it off. Then airs the house for an hour.

Totally OTT and paranoid. Just don't follow the bloke around or snog him.
Who are you talking to? People can read my post quite easily.

The kitchen is next to where I'm working, so of course I wear a mask when they're in there - it's a few feet away. Hardly paranoid to do something that reduces the possibility of picking up an airborne disease.

This thread is enlightening in showing how Covid is still spreading.

blowinahoolie · 22/03/2021 14:53
@blowinahoolie you reported your next door neighbours workman as they weren't wearing a mask? Shock

Reported them to who? What did you expect would be done? How did it affect you in any way?
My NDN drove his workman to the property, neither wearing a mask in the car. They didn't socially distance at all. I reported them to the police using the Covid 19 reporting form.

They had lockdown parties too in the first lockdown. They just don't give a flying f*CK about anyone else.

Tootsey11 · 22/03/2021 14:53

As a cleaner in other peoples homes, I do not wear a mask. I ask everyone to either be out when I clean, or if this isn't possible to set themselves up in one room and remain there until I'm done. I ventilate all rooms for the duration of the clean. There is no way I am going to try and work at pace cleaning with a mask on. No one has asked me to wear one either. I am turning work away each week, I can't keep up.

Op, you are over reacting, and so too is everyone else. Simply stay out of their way the whole time they are there and open all doors and windows for the duration of the work and up to an hour after they leave.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 22/03/2021 14:56

@blowinahoolie honestly mind blown!

Comefromaway · 22/03/2021 14:57

@blowinahoolie

NDN had work done in their property and the workman didn't have a mask on. They weren't bothered🤷 even reported what I saw. Doubt anything was done as the work carried on for weeks.
Who on earth did you report him to and what did you expect them to do about it.

It's not a legal requirement to wear a mask whilst working in someone's house, unlike a shop or a bus.

blowinahoolie · 22/03/2021 15:00
@blowinahoolie honestly mind blown!
If you had to put up with the noise they make you might also be pissed off too🤷

Recently at weekend the couple went away overnight, adult son and partner slammed doors all night long, loud thuds etc. You honestly don't know the half of it!

Jobsharenightmare · 22/03/2021 15:01

I personally wouldn't have let him in and would tell him to go and get a mask.

Hotcuppatea · 22/03/2021 15:07

@blowinahoolie oh right. So it was a malicious report because you're pissed off about the noise they make at other times. Gotcha.

Comefromaway · 22/03/2021 15:10

If there was a valid noise nuisance you should have reported that. Wearing a mask or not was an entirely private matter between teh workmen and the householder.

notacooldad · 22/03/2021 15:11

Has anyone had anyone in there house with no mask on while doing work?
Yes.

1jan2021 · 22/03/2021 15:14

I’m getting some decorating work done soon and I wouldn’t expect the decorator to wear a mask all day whilst painting. It really wouldn’t be easy for someone to do a job like that in a mask!

Instead we will be in separate rooms all day with windows open. We will also wear masks when passing each other (if he comes through the kitchen to use the loo for example) or if I need to go and look at something.

Would others require a decorator to wear a mask at all times?

Comefromaway · 22/03/2021 15:14

I wore a mask and so did the door salesperson when he visited to quote as we were in the same room for the duration.

The plasterer who did our spare bedroom and the door fitters didn't wear masks as they were working in a different part of the house with windows open.

Wanderlusto · 22/03/2021 15:17

You'd be more likely to catch it from things he had touched if anything. Just open the windows and use a bit of debtol once he is gone.

Masks are only really useful to catch an unexpected sneeze anyway. Or if he was talking to you whilst right up close with you. They are porous lol.

MaxNormal · 22/03/2021 15:33

I wouldn't care if they didn't have a mask on, up to them if they want to wear one.

makingmyway10 · 22/03/2021 15:40

I have had several workmen in over the last few months. Actually have a plumber here now, no mask but I am ok as he is in the bathroom with windows upstairs open and I am in another room. I stand at least 2 feet if not further away from him when talking to him. The carpet fiitters did not wear masks , again I left all windows open and stayed out the room . Engineer from Scottish power wore a mask and so did the curtain fitters As they are all doing physical work and I have had my first vaccine I am not worried. However I would expect them to wear a mask if I asked them to.

Disneymum1993 · 22/03/2021 15:50

I wear a mask if I have people in working in the house but I don't insist other people have to as they may have medical conditions and exempt from wearing, I would just open the windows and doors and wear a mask your self

MRex · 22/03/2021 15:50

No. Once our cleaner is in a different room (usually on a different floor swapped about) with windows open and door shut she doesn't wear a mask, and that's an equivalent. We wear masks while near each other or passing. We'll drop masks in the house though once she and DH are each 3 weeks post vaccination (neither vaccinated yet). I'd still expect any random tradesperson to wear one in the room with us while it's recommended and until cases are very low.
CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 22/03/2021 16:33

Your house your rules. End of, no argument, a workman who refused would be sent away immediately.

blowinahoolie · 22/03/2021 16:49

But I have reported the noise pollution too. They are just a nuisance!
