Workman in house no mask

JC17fj74 · 22/03/2021 12:27

We have a workman in the house and he hasn't got a mask on 😕
I'm really surprised and when I said to him about it he said he ha had Covid last year and has his jab. That doesn't stop him spreading it though and now I'm really anxious staying in another room while he works.
Has anyone had anyone in there house with no mask on while doing work?
Maybe I'm being over cautious 🤷🏻‍♀️

I've had a few tradesmen in recently and none have worn masks. I'm not overly bothered tbh, none of us are vulnerable and I've been vaccinated but if we catch it then we catch it...I'm beyond caring tbh

blowinahoolie · 22/03/2021 19:32

If we turned a blind eye to all Covid breaches what's the point in being in a lockdown? Police can't be expected to be everywhere at once👀

That's so Stasi it's unreal.

I've told them it's up to them and asked if they fancied a tea or coffee.
Sadsiblingatsea · 22/03/2021 19:35

It’s not healthy to expect him to wear a mask when he’s doing physical labour.
Open a window.

Comefromaway · 22/03/2021 19:38

It was for work purposes so was allowed.

notrub · 22/03/2021 19:43

Unless he's in the same room as you, then it won't make ANY difference whether he has a mask on or not.

NailsNeedDoing · 22/03/2021 19:47

It’s unfair of you to expect t someone to do trade work, all day long, wearing a mask.

If it was something that was important to you then you should have confirmed that he wasn’t exempt and that he was willing to wear a mask all day, or you leave the house while he’s working. I’ve just had a tradesman in for a full week, I wouldn’t dream of insisting that he wear a mask while working alone for all that time.

Babdoc · 22/03/2021 19:53

Had to laugh at PPs who said people can’t do heavy physical work wearing a mask all day.
How do you think orthopaedic surgeons manage an 8 hour trauma operating list, wearing not just a mask but a full torso lead pinafore to protect them from the image intensifier taking repeated X rays while they are wielding power tools such as bone saws and drills and supporting heavy obese legs?!

FuckingFabulous · 22/03/2021 19:59

We had a workman come in our house in October without a mask and we asked for him to put a mask on. He refused and he told us he'd tested negative for Covid a week ago and that he wasn't breaking any law and we should be grateful he'd come at all, as we could have Covid and he was within his rights to ask us all to put a mask on to protect HIM. Finished it with "touché, eh mate?"

DH told him to get out.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 22/03/2021 20:00

I'd politely ask him to wear a mask or leave.

Tootsey11 · 22/03/2021 20:01

Babdoc have to disagree with you. There are different types of physical jobs, some are standing in one place working like a surgeon, others are moving round up down constantly. I'm covering 18000 steps on an average day. Sometimes 6 days a week. Like hell am I wearing a damn mask. And no one has batted an eyelid. Don't be so judgemental, some people can deal with wearing a mask for a long period of time, some can't.

MaxNormal · 22/03/2021 20:10

and he was within his rights to ask us all to put a mask on to protect HIM

So were you asking him to wear a mask but not wearing one yourselves then?

Nicknacky · 22/03/2021 20:13

@blowinahoolie What law was being broken?

Greybeardy · 22/03/2021 20:18

Am totally with @Babdoc. If we can spend the best part of 12 hours in full PPE (including lead aprons for lots of things) then a workman can too! The example of orthopaedics is good - it gets pretty physical and sweaty in theatre even without PPE. CPR in full shebang is a pretty good workout. Pushing patients round hospitals is proper physical work. HCPs aren’t miraculously superhuman - we suffer the same illnesses/variable fitness levels as any other people but just get on with it. It is perfectly possible to spend an entire working day in a face mask. Or perhaps the ‘no maskers’ won’t mind if we stop wearing them in hospital because it’s too unpleasant?... thought not.

Orthopaedic surgeons enter their field knowing that they'll have to do all of that. Bathroom fitters/plumbers/glaziers whatever do not. If you know you're unable to wear a mask while carrying out heavy physical work you probably don't enter that field in the first place. Builders and so on had no idea there was a pandemic on the horizon.

I still think it's OP's house so OP's rules, but let's not forget that not everyone can wear a mask.

TheVampiresWife · 22/03/2021 20:38

@Greybeardy I'm not a 'no masker' by any means but I am exempt. I'd have no problem at all being treated by someone who was exempt - in fact the vaccinator when I had my jab last week wasn't wearing a mask or gloves.

If you can wear a mask, wear one. If you can't, you can't, and you shouldn't be vilified for not being able to do so.

Presumably surgeons are wearing PPE not solely for covid purposes though. What tradesman needs to get up close and personal with open body parts and fluids ? Yeah that's right, none!
LouScot · 22/03/2021 20:47

I've only had a gas engineer in the house during the past year and yes, I insisted masks were worn, I wore one to answer the door and opened all the downstairs windows fully - in January, in Scotland. I did make it clear when I was booking the appointment that I would be doing this so they could decide beforehand whether or not they wanted the job. I prefer to think of this as sensible and responsible as opposed to "covid phobic" but obviously others will disagree...

LouScot · 22/03/2021 20:50

*I kept my mask on until he'd left too

Wellbythebloodyhell · 22/03/2021 20:51

Theres no reason why anyone needs to be within 2m of any tradesman ever. The comparison to medical staff is bullshit.

WithTeaTree · 22/03/2021 20:52

It wouldn’t bother me personally. Had someone in to repair the dishwasher and he had no mask. I just kept my distance and left him to it.

This.

Unless you're licking the gasman you'll be fine.

I refer back to my earlier comment about it being some women's fantasy to sleep with the workman WinkGrin
