EU threatening to cut off supply of vaccines to UK

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 17/03/2021 13:24

Because they've not got enough apparently (despite the fact that they've got a shit load of AZ stockpiled because they've mostly stopped using it)

This is really starting to piss me off now, and has someone who is due 2nd Pfizer jab in 8 weeks in starting to worry I won't get it!

They're threatening to stop supply to USA too.

Wankers

Distopian scenario : Imagine only one country in the world can make something that could save humanity, but they refuse to export it to protect their citizens. Imagine them having the "recipe" and not sharing the knowledge so others can manufacture it. What would you feel about that country?

Theworldisfullofgs · 18/03/2021 16:05

Covid is a global issue. Most things are and will become more so with climate change.

I'd say thank god for Oxfrord University, AstraZenica and the UK government!
Motorina · 18/03/2021 16:34

Pretty much this!

Does anyone feel sorry for Ox/Az? They've brought out a highly effective, safe vaccine. Set up world-wide manufacturing capacity to allow for global supply chains. And done it all on a non-profit basis.

And they've basically been accused of everything except buggering tortoises.

If I were them, I'd be perilously close to throwing my hands in the air and walking away.

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2021 16:35

Ha yep Motorina

StormzyinaTCup · 18/03/2021 16:42

Yes, I have felt feel very sorry for all the people involved at OX/AZ since it all started turning sour in January for exactly those reasons.......but

And they've basically been accused of everything except buggering tortoises.

did really make me laugh.

TheHoneyBadger · 18/03/2021 16:51

Don't give them ideas of what to accuse them of next!

I'm so disgusted that macron et al have damaged confidence in the world's most affordable vaccine

So do you think the EU will come up with another reason they can’t use AZ after this or will the get on with vaccinating people now?

StormzyinaTCup · 18/03/2021 17:10

I'm not sure that what the EMA have said, especially this bit

But the EMA, she added, could not rule out definitively a link between the vaccine and a "small number of cases of rare and unusual but very serious clotting disorders".
is going to reassure populations that are typically vaccine hesitant ie. France.

Will be interesting to see what individual countries decide to do now in light of this, especially as they have disregarded the EMA previously with regard over 65s.

TheHoneyBadger · 18/03/2021 17:15

Hasn't their been similar incidences with the Pfizer vaccine or did I dream reading that? They really seem to have it in for the AZ vac.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/03/2021 17:16

Ooh! Lost a sentence. That was acknowledging todays t'internet winner @Motorina Smile

Yep! Almost identical, maybe slightly higher by %

Odd isn't it?

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 18/03/2021 17:21

Oxford-AZ have done an amazing job. A thank you wouldn't go amiss instead of this constant carping. If I was the head of AZ I'd be inclined to close my plants within the EU and tell them to crack on with their own if they are so unhappy with AZ!

I needed a laugh today. I agree post of the day. I wonder if they can walk away from best efforts contract heres a refund. As they already published a confidential contract they dident redact very well.

Its been said over and over again that the blood clotting which may occur with AZ is extremely rare and specific type, the one with Pfizer are more normal.

UK govt has it in for EU threatening supplies, when India actually goes and does it, a more softly tone is applied.

ScribblingPixie · 18/03/2021 18:04

So it's a complete all-clear from the EMA for the Oxford Vaccine. What an absolute palaver.

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2021 18:07

Have any countries lifted the pause now?

I guess that’s the outcome - pause or not

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/03/2021 18:08

UK govt has it in for EU threatening supplies, when India actually goes and does it, a more softly tone is applied. Nope!

The Indian situation is a contractual matter. As posted upthread.

The EU situation is not contractial, or maybe is but only because the EU one is different. It disadvantages the EU in the same was as the UK is disadvantged by their contract with the Indian AZ supplier. Think that through...

The UK is both advantged by and disadvantaged by the same contractual issues... THAT is why they aren't making a fuss about the Indian shortfall.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/03/2021 18:08

I keep looking for additional headlines....
CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/03/2021 18:10

StormzyinaTCup · 18/03/2021 18:11

I think Sweden may be keeping the ban in place for the time being.

NewYearNewTwatName · 18/03/2021 18:11

UK govt has it in for EU threatening supplies, when India actually goes and does it, a more softly tone is applied

I've not caught up the news yet today.

But I would imagine it is because India didn't get on a massive megaphone and shout from the roof tops "fuck you UK, we need them more and we want yours!"

The letter was leaked yesterday, as India had obviously had a quiet word and some sort of agreement was arranged. The government then decided to take steps to slow down appointments, without causing alarm. (apart from the letter being leaked)

NewYearNewTwatName · 18/03/2021 18:15

Its been said over and over again that the blood clotting which may occur with AZ is extremely rare and specific type, the one with Pfizer are more normal

Only 5 of the rare type blood clots. the others are the same amount of normal blood clots found in a population.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/03/2021 18:16

Don't spoil it @NewYearNewTwatName I wanted to see what @jasjas1973 had!
