EU threatening to cut off supply of vaccines to UK

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 17/03/2021 13:24

Because they've not got enough apparently (despite the fact that they've got a shit load of AZ stockpiled because they've mostly stopped using it)

This is really starting to piss me off now, and has someone who is due 2nd Pfizer jab in 8 weeks in starting to worry I won't get it!

They're threatening to stop supply to USA too.

Wankers

Don't be daft. Lots of our vaccines come from India or within the UK, the EU has no ability to "cut off" supplies.

Myalternate · 17/03/2021 13:30

Remember, it's not political...apparently.

Wherediditgo · 17/03/2021 13:31

They’re really not showing themselves in a good light are they?
Firstly by initially not vaccinating the over 65s with the AZ
Then by suspending the roll-put again recently due to blood clotting fears
Both whilst simultaneously trying to hamper the roll-out in other countries and attempting to block supplies leaving the bloc!

GreyHairedGardener · 17/03/2021 13:32

That Ursula woman is a joke.

lljkk · 17/03/2021 13:33

Brexit Republic podcast last week has some interesting summary of how many vaccines the EU has exported. In short, a huge amount more than UK or USA have.

Alexandernevermind · 17/03/2021 13:34

Ha ha, definitely not political - honest.
There was a uk trial in February to say that mixing vaccines could possibly give better protection.

FourTeaFallOut · 17/03/2021 13:34

It's definitely not political. This is what you must say and then repeat it like a mantra before you are accused of being a rabid brexiteer.

Do you know what the proportions are? Ie any from EU?

Urm I'm not being daft Confused It's in the article. They are saying they may stop supplied leaving the EU if they are destined for countries which have vaccinated a lot of people.

How much Pfizer is produced in the UK? I didn't think it was any.

AZ supply comes from india/UK (and no other bugger wants it anyway!) So that is less of an issue.

For people like me who've had 1st Pfizer it definitely could be an issue!

Also Pfizer is an American company with huge US manufacturing centres, so I'm curious as to how you think the EU could "cut off" supplies to the US.

mumsneedwine · 17/03/2021 13:36

Is it a good time to point out that one of the ingredients needed for Pfizer jab is made in Yorkshire.

I'm not saying it!!

From the artice:

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen today threatened to cut off exports of Covid-19 jabs to Britain and other vaccine-producing countries unless doses start flowing across to mainland Europe.

@mumneedswine good to know!

I'm sure that our government won't just sit back and do nothing if what is said in this article turns out to be true. Despite the fact that vaccines aside they are generally a bit shit

How many remainders are relieved we are no longer in the EU now???Grin

There are manufacturing stages in EU - Belgium and Germany iirc

So it depends how much stock comes to us from there.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/03/2021 13:40

As far as I know the UK export some components that are vital for the vaccine production, so what happens if we ban their export? then no one will have a vaccine.

Talk about the EU throwing their toys out of the pram.

Uronmute · 17/03/2021 13:40

They are honestly starting to look incredibly stupid now. It’s like kids in the school playground - whining because they’re not getting their own way- pathetic.

GreyHairedGardener · 17/03/2021 13:40

Remainers!

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 17/03/2021 13:41

And from that quote itooks like she is throwing her toys out of the pram because she's not getting enough AZ supply coming from the UK

But since a lot of countries have banned it/refuse to use it on over 65s why does it matter?

lljkk · 17/03/2021 13:42

EU exported 34 million COVID-19 vaccine doses by 14 January.

India has exported 58 million (I think I understand what crore are) by 17 March.

So how many vaccine doses have UK or USA exported? Must be 10s of millions each, right?

starfro · 17/03/2021 13:42

VDL has a terrible reputation in German politics, and it is said that countries get rid of their worst politicians by sending them off to the EU.

The flip-flopping on the AZ vaccine is ridiculous. One day it is no good, the next they're banning its export. This has happened at least twice now.

Marmaladeagain · 17/03/2021 13:43

I think the EU messaging is at the level now of becoming criminally dangerous.

They could cause vaccine hesitancy, particularly in poorer countries. Macron should be held accountable for their "quasi effective" comments on Astra-Zeneca etc.

I think it is criminal in fact and potentially someone should starting talking about potential consequences of being referred to E Court of Human Rights or even war crimes - yes, I know sounds over the top but this is a global pandemic and Macron et al are behaving against the advice of their own EU medicines recommendation body that the vaccine is safe etc.

EU have shown they are willing to retrospectively change terms of contracts with their threats of withholding vaccine or components etc.

They are worried at being exposed the UK could be on the verge of everyone vaccinated this year and they want to try to stop the second dose getting us there by scaring everyone with their dangerous war of words. I don't think this is just politics, this is dangerous behaviour with worldwide consequences.

Lockheart · 17/03/2021 13:43

No but you're swallowing the article hook line and sinker.

The EU is not the world's only vaccine manufacturer. Regardless of what UVdL says, they simply don't have the ability to cut off our, or the USA's, or any other countries supplies because these vaccines are being manufactured globally.

lljkk · 17/03/2021 13:44

Oh, no, this can't be right. USA is refusing to export ordered vaccines. How strange! Who would have thought it?
