Hope social distancing and masks in supermarkets stay

Supermarkets are so much more organised these days. I really hope they keep the perspex screens in supermarkets when this is over.
I'm not looking forward to going back to the hellishh free for all supermarket scrum expeeience that was there pre-covid.
I think showemarket shopping is a much more enjoyable, civilised expeeience under covid.
Anyway, I'm sure the checkout assistants who sit low down don't want to go back to having hordes of customers breathing down on them again.

Shopworker here and really hope that management keep the screens and mandate the cleaning schedules to continue. It'll be challenging when people stop social distancing.

As for the people who can't wear a mask for the brief time it takes to shop, I've given up on that attitude now. I don't have the energy anymore to argue with those people.

I just hope they keep being mandatory, with distancing, for a long time still. I dread when they aren't as supermarket workers are going to be even more at risk.

likeamillpond · 11/03/2021 22:06

@megletsecond

I hope retailers keep the screens. I think their entitled to keep checkout staff safe from customers.
I like the screens between the self service tills. It stops people hovering near your shoulder and forcing you to rush.

You are a fucking nutter if you like wearing masks

Racoonworld · 11/03/2021 22:08

i Hope not! I’m not distancing for a minute longer than I have to

Racoonworld · 11/03/2021 22:09

Yes screens can stay, they’re a good idea.

GetLost · 11/03/2021 22:09

I'm not keen on the masks but it's ok on short trips round the supermarket. The social distancing is good, especially when queueing because it stops the ignorant ones from shoving me with their baskets.

Aurelia1313 · 11/03/2021 22:10

No! I want to be able to be social! Smile at people, talk to lonely old folks and get stuff off shelves for the vertically challenged, you know make a connection with my community? There's only so much I can do with my limited eyebrow communication techniques (bloody 90's got barely any left)

3CCC · 11/03/2021 22:13

I hope people wear masks if they have a cold but not everyday.

Donotfeedthebears · 11/03/2021 22:13

Surely anybody who wants to wear a mask can wear one and the rest of us can get on with our lives.

Vivana · 11/03/2021 22:14

I cannot wait to ditch the mask. Having to wear them for 12 hour shifts is not nice at all.

HereComesATractor · 11/03/2021 22:18

“ I dread when they aren't as supermarket workers are going to be even more at risk.”

Even more at risk of what, if masks are ditched when cases are very low and the majority of adults vaccinated? At what point would you be ok with masks no longer being mandatory? Or would you like them to be worn forever?

AMEN OP! It's so good to see people being in a queue instead of just walking in as they pelase as though they own the place. Also credit for letting older people in first.

If we'd taken the war on covid and CO2 seriously and moved to rationing as well (don't get triggered, snowflakes, no shortage of choccies) we could have slashed illnesses of metabolic syndrome and also not had the 16.7% increase in alcohol-linked deaths we saw last year.

New normal, so why not make it a better normal. Also if shops just shared what groceries we buy on our facebook that would cut down a lot of sneaky greasy food, Dairy Milks, and CO2 emitting burgers and cheese. Freedom does NOT mean freedom to do whatever the hell you like when Our NHS is staggering under the burden of reckless self-indulgence!

Viviennemary · 11/03/2021 22:29

I certainly hope they don't. Perhaps they could have a special supermarket with masks, perspex screens to cater for people who want this. I don't.

willibald · 11/03/2021 22:33

Have acne for the first time since I was a teenager with these masks. Hate them.

Mydogmylife · 11/03/2021 22:36

@KettleWentBang

I don't. I find it rakes twice as long. Because people are dilly dallying looking at items. I know what I want.. I want to grab tm, chuck in trolley and get out. I normally can do a huge shop in around 20 /30nmin. Its now 45 to near on an hour. I'm on a tight schedule in the 3 hour pre school time slot to get stuff done. I don't have time for that shit. Thankfully one of the aldis and one of the tesco people don't worry about the 2m thing so I tend to go to them.. Bit further drive but still quicker
See, I find the opposite! Where I go, folk are now in with the list, pick up what they need and out, with no gossipy chats with pals or deli staff for example. Although the queue at the checkout is longer physically, it's got just the same number of folk in it.
Acesulfame · 11/03/2021 22:37

First, anyone who wants masks to continue as a matter of routine needs to have a word with themselves. I’m also unclear how they make the weekly big shop more civilised, as opposed to making it look like everyone is about to do over a post office.

Second, there’s social distancing in supermarkets? I don’t know where you shop but it’s pretty much been a free for all for the past six months near me.

OnSecondThoughts · 11/03/2021 22:50

I want every single change in social behaviour to do with 2020-21 to be obliterated and annihilated. Every reminder of it to be erased from memory. I want human beings to able to legally act like human beings again. I want normality - the OLD, NORMAL normality to be reinstated. No "build back better" or any of that nonsense. Things were fine as they were, thanks.

louderthan · 11/03/2021 22:50

Definitely keep screens up, also hand sanitizer at the door. If nothing else then I hope the events of the last year will normalise hand washing after using the toilet, before eating etc. Y'know, just the basics of personal hygiene.
I myself will continue to wear a mask on public transport, if only as a barrier between me and the general miasma of piss/vomit/vape/weed/unwashed bodies etc etc

dividedwefall · 11/03/2021 22:55

Think OP should go and live in China if they want to keep this way of life longer term.

Me, I hate people and crowds usually but I just can't wait to be crushed by other people crowing together in the shopping centre again.

And masks - no words! Why would you want to keep wearing a horrible mask fgs? I can hardly breathe in them.

Pootle40 · 11/03/2021 22:59

Hell no to that shit

PickAChew · 11/03/2021 23:00

Looking forward to being able to sniff my veg to make sure it's not manky, again, tbh, even though I do appreciate the distancing, when it happens.

ssd · 11/03/2021 23:03

I work in a supermarket. I like the plastic screens up, saves people breathing all over you and leaning over to talk in your face.

louderthan · 11/03/2021 23:04

I'm honestly not trying to be goady but I don't get the issue with masks. I'm a glasses wearer and I hated wearing one at first but now I've got the hang of adjusting it so my specs don't steam up.
I work in an essential frontline role (not retail) and if I'm on site I have to wear a mask for 4+ hours at a time and it doesn't really bother me. I suppose I've just got used to it.
If you don't have a health condition that makes you exempt and you're not a glasses wearer please can you say why you don't like wearing a mask?
I will repeat: not goady, just curious !!
I should state now that I fully understand that some people can't wear masks and I have no issue with that.

Sparklingbrook · 11/03/2021 23:05

I like the social distancing required in shops, I'll keep the not invading personal space bit.
