Hope social distancing and masks in supermarkets stay

Supermarkets are so much more organised these days. I really hope they keep the perspex screens in supermarkets when this is over.
I'm not looking forward to going back to the hellishh free for all supermarket scrum expeeience that was there pre-covid.
I think showemarket shopping is a much more enjoyable, civilised expeeience under covid.
Anyway, I'm sure the checkout assistants who sit low down don't want to go back to having hordes of customers breathing down on them again.

@willibald

Have acne for the first time since I was a teenager with these masks. Hate them.
My jaw line feels like the surface of the moon. I'm a menopausal woman, ffs!
3CCC · 11/03/2021 23:08

I have a clicky jaw dentist took a look and said they'll keep an eye on it but I'm sure it's worse since wearing masks, like it's acting like the opposing of a brace

I'm honestly not trying to be goady but I don't get the issue with masks. I'm a glasses wearer and I hated wearing one at first but now I've got the hang of adjusting it so my specs don't steam up. I work in an essential frontline role (not retail) and if I'm on site I have to wear a mask for 4+ hours at a time and it doesn't really bother me. I suppose I've just got used to it. If you don't have a health condition that makes you exempt and you're not a glasses wearer please can you say why you don't like wearing a mask? I will repeat: not goady, just curious !! I should state now that I fully understand that some people can't wear masks and I have no issue with that.
I don't like wearing a mask because I feel like I can't breathe, I feel like I am suffocating, my face gets hot and they are smelly from the chemicals or even washing powder from my reusable ones. It is a thoroughly unpleasant experience for some people.

I don't mind wearing it myself that much - although obviously I'd prefer not to have to - it's more that I like to see people's faces when I'm talking to them, even if it's just a superficial interaction. So much of how we communicate involves facial expressions, not just words, and masks obviously limit that.
KatyNonRoyal · 11/03/2021 23:20

@ssd

I work in a supermarket. I like the plastic screens up, saves people breathing all over you and leaning over to talk in your face.
Finally a voice of sanity! People are disgusting, and even if the reactionaries get their way I think screens are a good reminder that half the world can't just prance into a shop and be greeted with a friendly face and a bit of a chat anyway. If we had robot attendants, or chips to swipe on our phones, older people could go a whole day and not have to see a face at all, and people like you wouldn't have to risk being infected by the viruses customers get every winter.
ineedaholidaynow · 11/03/2021 23:25

I like the social distancing and the screens. Hate it when people breathe down your neck when you are queuing at the till. Our supermarket is still limiting numbers, but very rare to have to queue to go in

MidSummersNightmare · 11/03/2021 23:26

Same here. Feel like I can’t breathe properly. I start to feel dizzy as well as sick and headachey.
It’s bearable if the mask is really loose so lots of air coming in around the sides and top but I assume this defeats the point. I’m surprised more people don’t have the same issues as most people I know barely notice they are wearing one.

KatyNonRoyal · 11/03/2021 23:30

Does anyone have the death stats for supermarket staff before masks were brought in? Has to be high enough to knock the naysayers back down to earth.

Shelovesamystery · 11/03/2021 23:36

Oh I find it completely the opposite, more disorganised and difficult. I can't wait until masks are gone and social distancing ends. I hate having to hang around giving space to someone who spends 10 minutes looking at a particular section of the shelves only to decide that they aren't going to buy anything from there when I could have just grabbed the item I wanted and got on with my life.

poshme · 11/03/2021 23:53

No.

I hate shopping wearing a mask. It doesn't matter which mask I try, my glasses end up steaming up. I then can't see properly. I cannot walk around without my glasses I'd be unsafe.

My face gets really hot and every time I get to a point where I feel like I'm having hot flushes. Have to stop and fan myself for 10 minutes.

Because i have to bend the mask closely to my nose to try and reduce the steaming, every breath in -the mask sucks close to my face. I hate it.

I wear a mask every time, but I can't wait for when I can shop without one.

7961 working age people died with Covid between March and Dec last year, and that is all occupations. I would imagine the amount of supermarket workers who died is small. Then you also have to factor in that they may have caught Covid from family etc, and not from their workplace.

TheOldRazzleDazzle · 12/03/2021 00:17

I don’t exactly hate masks (quite useful when I had a horrible rash last year), but they are a symbol of illness and rules so will be happy to see them go. I also don’t like that they ride up whenever I look down and I end up opening my mouth wide open to kind of keep it in position. A delightful image, yes! I didn’t realise I was doing it at first, but if I’m in a shop for a while my jaw starts aching...

I won’t be wearing one when I have a cold either, because a cold for me equals constantly streaming nose and me having to blow it. The congestion also means I can’t bear anything touching my face.

MooseBreath · 12/03/2021 00:25

I'm ok to carry on wearing a mask in public if I have a cold to protect others, but like hell am I doing it all the time!

Will you still wear the mask on-site for 4+ hours at a time once it is no longer mandated and you personally are satisfied that the risks of covid are low enough? Because if you won’t continue to wear them, then there is your answer for many people. People prefer not to walk around wearing masks over their nose and mouth, it’s just a natural way for humans to feel. It doesn’t have to be about medical conditions, it’s just not how we want to go about in public for most of us.

It doesn’t bother me to wear one when I’m on my own and not exerting myself. As soon as I have to wear one whilst wrangling a toddler and baby I find it hot and restrictive and much harder to communicate, especially whilst also managing distancing and one-way systems and so on (and yes, I’m sure there are mothers with two sets of twins under 3yo who find it no trouble at all to wear a mask, they don’t even notice it, and I’m just being feeble). I have my children with me all the time, so it heavily restricted where I could go, even when more places were open. So while the mask on its own doesn’t bother me, I will happily ditch it once no longer required

HereComesATractor · 12/03/2021 00:38

I can remember MNers last summer going “I hope masks are around for a while because I’ve spent a fortune on ones with pretty fabrics!” Really strange way to miss the point

KatyNonRoyal · 12/03/2021 01:01

@Downriver

You can't breathe? Oh for God sake. Some people are just ridiculous. I really like masking, actually. Warm and it saves on lippy.
Exactly! I don't understand why people can't look on the bright side. It's not like seeing faces is that important.

And if people don't like masks they can always go to a spa like this one TimeOut magazine mentions lol: www.timeout.com/hong-kong/things-to-do/how-to-survive-quarantine-camp-in-hong-kong

39.8% of PCR positives being wrong (source) means you might even get a break from things and not have to feel a bit poorly! Lots of screens and organisation I bet.

Pack yourself a yoga mat and some nibbles, and catch up on sleeping in! Cake

Elsia · 12/03/2021 01:06

I’m amused by the people who are celebrating the end of social distancing in the supermarket. What are you planning to do?! Why would you want to be close to people in the supermarket?!

I don’t really mind the masks any more. I will still be ditching them ASAP. I also get irrationally annoyed when I’m on my local home bargains (in itself the biggest advert for continuing social distancing i have ever seen) and most people haven’t bothered with masks. It makes me twitch.

Wishfulthinking1977 · 12/03/2021 01:28

Can't wear one for more than 5 mins before I start scratching my face raw and having a panic attack, but don't worry I don't go anywhere they are needed, so I take delivery slots away from those that need them, I have cancelled my cancer screenings, don't go to dentist or optician's and pay for the medication that my child needs to stop them collapsing due to anxiety attacks having to wear them and a shield for 40 hours a week with 0 help from the government so you feel safe!!

TiddyTid · 12/03/2021 01:33

I agree OP. I love the space and sanitising. I want it to continue but I generally dislike being near people anyway 😂

BonnieDundee · 12/03/2021 06:34

I hope not. I queued outside the supermarket in the driving wind and rain the other.day. i dont.want to do that any longer than necessary. As for the masks I still dont believe.they make a difference, I dislike wearing them and cant wait for them to go.

Meanwhile millions of them are discarded every day, while we ignore climate change and the environment

KatherineJaneway · 12/03/2021 06:39

Where are you that people still social distance in supermarkets? That stopped here in July last year.

megletsecond · 12/03/2021 06:41

katy the screens act as a physical barrier between staff and stupid aggressive customers. For their sake the screens should stay.

OverTheRainbow88 · 12/03/2021 06:42

Happy for masks to go. But must admit I like the social distancing, used to hate peoples breathing down your neck waiting to pay etc
